So what would be the incentive a a player to go to a team. If Billups refuses to report he can just take his money and go home. A team cannot trade him. The NBA can't control it if a player wants to go and play for cheap. 62.9 mil for Arenas is quite a chunk of change

No, if Billups or Arenas would refuse to report to the team that claimed them, or to retire, they would forefeit all the money they are owed, not just the portion the new team would pay them.

If Billups wanted to be able to choose which team he'll play for this season, all he had to do is go to the Knicks and ask to be released from the final year of his contract before they waived him. They would have been more than happy to oblige. Then he could go sign with Miami for the minimum. But no, he wants to get paid the $14M he is owed by NY and still be able to sign with Miami or another contender. The rules of the new CBA make that more difficult than in the past due to the modified waiver system, so now in order to force the issue he is threatening any team that may think of claiming him that he will cause problems for them if claimed.

They ought to fine him significantly for the threats. Its this kind of crap that is ruining the NBA. NY extended Chauncy when they probably should not have. He is living on gravy as it is. These players have no idea how good they have it.

So Billups gets claimed by the Clippers. Reportedly, several teams bid on him and Clippers won. The league sent Billups a memo before he was claimed reminding him he'll be in breach of contract if he refuses to report or is disruptive.

But when you think about it, he landed in a perfect situation. It's not the Heat, but it's a huge market and he'll be starting at point for a team that features Eric Gordon and Blake Griffin. If it was going to be good enough for Chris Paul, it certainly should be good enough for Billups. And if he doesn't report, it will cost him $14M.

Yep. Its an ideal situation for Billups.

Good for the Clips too. Hate to say it, but I might be watching some of the Clips games this year. They will be entertaining.

So is Billups going to be Paul's backup now?

No, Billups will move to the two. They both are combo guard types and will probably play well together. Chris Paul has especially been effective in the past playing beside another pg. Billups has shown the ability to defend most 2's and Paul's shooting just makes it work.

Its an Isiah Thomas-Joe Dumars type of combo.

Chris Paul is a combo guard?

Chris Paul is a good enough shooter to share pg duties in a backcourt where both guards have those skills. Billups is a good enough defender to allow that combo to work.

By the way, did any of you catch the video of Griffin, Jordan and Butler receiving the news that the trade was completed. They were celebrating.

Paul is 5'10 (Yes, I know he is listed at 6'), and is really not a great shooter. Billups might be able to pull this off (play SG), but Paul is definitely not a combo guard by any stretch of the imagination.

One of the guys from espn was saying that Paul has been most effective when playing next to a guard with pg skills.
