All of these potential candidates have been head coaches in the NFL- which I see as highly important in being an offensive coordinator on Kingsbury’s staff. A list of my preferred candidates will change due to who they bring in for interviews. Just because I don’t think it makes much sense to root for someone they are not even interested in, just like with the defensive coordinator.

Rob Chudzinski – Has a reputation for being innovative. Known to use tight ends a lot which Kingsbury is not. Kingsbury has said his offensive coordinator “will be someone that will come in and help me mesh some of my ideas with some traditional things that they have done in the NFL.”

Jim Caldwell – I doubt that he would be an offensive coordinator without calling plays. Could still get a head coaching-job, though the Dolphins has not interviewed him, and it seems like the Bengals will go with Zac Taylor.

Ben McAdoo – Is a much better teacher than play-caller, which would fit fine with being Kingsbury’s coordinator and not call plays.

Bill Callahan – Former Super Bowl head coach known to build great offensive lines.

Brad Childress – Would be a great hire, but why does he keep quitting jobs? Buyer beware?

Also, I would really like if Stump Mitchell came back in some role, and I wouldn’t be totally against making him the offensive coordinator if that was what it took.

From that list, McAdoo seems the most logical to me. He is young, innovative, and has HC and OC experience in NFL.

His offenses as an OC were great but as HC, they were awful. Too much to handle?

Childress would also be interesting but is he too old guard for KK?

Pass on the rest for me.

I would really like Stump to come back but not as an OC.

Steve Sarkisian is also being interviewed.

He is another innovative offensive mind that has head coaching experience (although in college). I realize some people feel strongly about him (negatively) but for what KK is looking for (helping him mesh with NFL offense), SS has valuable experience.

The problem with getting a really good OC, is they know they won't be calling the plays. That is a tough sell if they have other options.

Marty Mornhinweg is another name to consider. Again, not in your traditional OC capacity...think NFL experience to assist KK in meshing Air Raid to NFL. He also has HC experience (horrible results though).

I wouldn't mine Marty Mornhinweg, but he is a west coast disciple. Not sure how that is going to mesh with the Air Raid offense?
Like Mornhinweg himself, the offense is meticulous and dependent on precise details. Quarterbacks alone have a menu of 30 different drills to chose from during the week, consistent with the Bill Walsh coaching philosophy Mornhinweg learned from, Higgins said.

Like Mornhinweg’s numbers show — eight top-10 scoring offenses as a head coach or coordinator, as well as nine top-10 passing offenses, and six top-10 rushing offenses — it can pay off.

"It’s versatile, there’s a lot of things you can do," Higgins said. "Typically you’re playing with two backs in the backfield, so you’re going to have the opportunity to run power, run gap schemes and run inside and outside zones.

"From a pass game standpoint, it’s all about timing and it’s all about rhythm."

I would like that except that he grew up in the Bill Walsh school of offense. Bill Walsh called him the brightest offense mind he ever worked with.

Has been NFL unemployed since 2015

Chudzinski has also worked within the Don Coryell tree as well with Norv Turner...Super sharp guy and would be a smart choice to blend concepts.

I guess this post has become relevant again. I am still leaning toward Bill Callahan because he is regarded as one of the best offensive line-coaches in the NFL, and since Kingsbury will handle the play calling anyway, I would really like someone to fix the offensive line.

I think McAdoo or Caldwell would be good as well, though.

Meh on Callahan as OC...most of his experience is oline. I think KK needs someone with more OC experience.

Caldwell is interesting. I was 100% *%&$ no on him being HC but he may be a good back-up plan for this role. Knows how to game plan and has HC experience.

I would like McAdoo but I'm sure there are others that they are considering that we may not be aware.

Seems like WR coach is going to be an important position in implementing this offense. Has someone been hired? Did I miss it? Are there names out there?

You are probably right, but personally I wouldn’t hold it against Callahan that he doesn’t use to call plays. The Cards’ situation is a bad strange, because they need the best possible offensive coordinator, yet cannot offer him to call plays. So, if that offensive coordinator-role is being taken by someone with a great track record at coaching offensive lines, I think it would be just as good, because they most likely can’t convince Callahan to sign with them as an offensive line coach. Obviously, Kingsbury wouldn’t be able to discuss idea with him in the same manner as with other candidates, though. Anyway, going by the reports of who they have requested interviews with, I am not so sure they are determined to get someone with a lot of NFL experience. Obviously, the decisions makers have a much better idea of the possibilities than me, but I just think it’s fun to speculate, so I thought of some other candidates. I am basically just namedropping:

Jake Spavital – Newly appointed head coach at Texas Tech, but was recently rumored to the Cards. Has a history with Kingsbury and is known for being highly involved in coaching the quarterbacks Kingsbury is being associated with. Maybe he is targeted for the quarterback coach-role? Has called plays along the way, but not all the time and not while coaching alongside Kingsbury.

Todd Haley – Well, someone had to bring him up, right? Took the offensive coordinator-job with the Browns knowing that he wouldn’t call plays.

Duce Staley – Staley has been brought up as a potential offensive coordinator at various places for a couple of years. He has even been considered a head coaching-candidate with several teams. He has been an assistant coach and thus learned under Andy Reid, Chip Kelly and Doug Pederson, which is a combination I could see Kingsbury and Keim being enamored by. He has never called plays.

Mike McDaniel – Both the Cardinals and the Packers requested interviews with McDaniel, but both were turned down. He is known as a right-hand man to Kyle Shanahan, especially in the game planning. Considered one of the up-and-coming coaches in the NFL yet does not call plays.

Nathaniel Hackett – Was made the scapegoat with the Jaguars for their struggles this season. I think he is a good offensive coordinator, though, and last year he even made the Jaguars’ offense one of the best in the league with Blake Bortles as the quarterback. Has lots of NFL experience, and is known for running a variation of the “Air Coryell-offense” which is not the same as the “Air Raid-offense” but not that different either. Uses to call plays but has already interviewed for the Packers’ offensive coordinator-position days ago knowing that their new head coach, Matt LaFleur, would call the plays.

Todd Monken – Has already had several interviews for being head coach this offseason, and now he is being interviewed by teams to be their offensive coordinator. Did a really good job at Tampa Bay the last couple of years and has head coaching experience in the college ranks. Neither the Packers nor the Browns are likely to hand over play calling to him, yet he still interviewed for their offensive coordinator-spot.

I would have to double check but it seems like Callahan's rep as OL came from Oakland and it was more the OL coach Tom Cable than him?

I've always wanted us to hire Cable, he's back with the Raiders now, was with Seattle before that

I think the Cards are a fantastic opportunity for a OC that wants to be a HC.

I'd say that they would have their name associated with the newest offense to take the NFL by storm. Offense rules the NFL and there will be a high demand for anyone who knows how to install and run the KK offense.

Not a coincidence that Seahawks line has gotten better since Cable left and that Oaklands was worse since he arrived. Cable has struggled to adapt to college linemen.

I'd have to look it up but Marshawn Lynch's career took off in Seattle after they hired Cable. There was lots of concern when the Raiders hired him this time because he's a zone blocking guy and the feeling was the raiders weren't built to do that. And remember Seattle has been famous for NOT drafting OL's high because they think Wilson can use his legs to offset the OL. they spent the money on their defense.

Google says 4.2 ypc in 17 without Cable as OL coach, 4.2 YPC in 18 with Cable, and that's with Lynch only playing 6 games, they essentially resurrected Doug Martin, he had nearly twice as many yards last year as the prior 2 combined in Tampa.

The sacks went way up but that was largely due to Gruden making Kolton Miller the LT as a rookie, stats say Miller led the NFL in sacks allowed with 14, and led the NFL in pressures allowed, he played much of the year with an injured knee and frankly was overrated in college, never got how he was a first round pick he was good not great at UCLA. Statistically Carr was good, 68%, but his TD to INT rate wasn't as good and he took a long time to get comfortable in Gruden's offense

I always wanted us to hire Cable because his run offenses were so good, but with Kliff in charge it likely wouldn't be a good fit now.
