After what has been an extremely taxing and emotional week, I feel as if the sun is shining and order has been restored to the kingdom of Denmark, if you don't mind the allusion to Hamlet.

While I still harbor highly mixed feelings about the way in which the Cardinals do their business, I praise them for understanding the gist and gravity of Warner's situation, to the point where they seized the new opportunity that was presented to them yesterday following Warner's admission that his heart was still and now will always be in Arizona, by moving with alacrity and decisiveness to get his contract signed.

Quite frankly, I was worried that they would continue to draw a hard line with Warner...but, as it turns out, when Warner and Bartelstein came down from their $29M perch and settled in at $23M...that was the number the Cardinals were satisfied with. And they wasted no time getting the contract finished.

As for Warner, one could readily tell that he has been an uncomfortable and conflicted man throughout this process. During his ESPN interview with Trey Wingo, it was painful to see Warner come across as greedy...for it was a posture that few of us have never seen from Warner...because Warner has always been the epitome of the humble, pious and considerate soul...in fact, his story has inspired so many...let's just say that humble fits him to a tee.

But, what he said in his press conference resonates very serenely and emphatically tonight...he conceded with an awed shrug that "yes, the numbers are staggering"...and he added that "I have been blessed to work in a profession where there is a high value on what I do"....and furthermore added that he feels "it's my responsibility to do what God wants me to do with what I have been given." To me, I have no doubt that Kurt Warner will do even MORE than that.

It also was delightful to learn that within 45 minutes of his interview with the 49ers, Warner knew his heart remained in Arizona. He said he tried to keep an open mind, which was his intention all along, but that it was clear to him when Mike Singletary was outlining his vision of the 49ers, that he thought of Coach Whiz's vision in Arizona and how much he shares in Whiz's vision.

Both the Cardinals and Warner deserve praise at this precious time in Arizona Cardinal history. Both Coach Whiz and Warner kept referring to their excitement in continuing to build on the momentum of they have been building all along...and that, my good friends, is the sweet sweet music that we can go to sleep with tonight.

Halleluiah!

P.S. When Warner went on his visit to SF, I kept thinking of the novel Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse...a wonderfully written allegory about a man who travels the globe and succumbs to temptations in search of spiritual bliss...only to find that his "ohm" (or spiritual bliss) was right there in his own backyard the entire time. To Kurt: thanks for being wise enough to see what's in your own backyard.

Now build a freaking running game, improve the Oline, and shore up that damn defense and we can get start talking about being better than we were.

Very well said Mitch. Nice tie ins with your literary background. I for one, am glad this deal was finally made and now the team can keep moving forward and start working on other contracts that need attending too. My next question is can the Cards now do anytthing with Boldin?

Perfectly put Mitch... You captured the entirety of this situation...

It's hard to imagine just how painful '09 would have been without Warner at the helm. '08 was such an unexpected gift, do we have the right to expect anything close to this again in 2009?

With Kurt back and fully committed, we are clearly the odds-on favorite to win the west and potentially do some damage again in the playoffs. If Kurt had exited Arizona, there is now way this team would have been favored to win the division... Yes, Matt still has that much to prove...

Don't know where they are going to find a RB to finally get that element of our offense into gear... :bang:

And it appears that Campbell and Iwebema are going to be the answers to Smith's departure...
And who knows what will happen in our secondary... Hood/Rolle... depth???

But Kurt is back and the west is ours to lose...

So God says... show me the money. Please forgive me while I choke. Christianity as taught in the Bible is everything but all about the money.

Nevertheless, a well written article.

Thank you, Mitch, for putting into words a lot of what I have been thinking.

I was tremendously impressed with Kurt during the press conference. Among a lot of other issues he acknowledged that a lot of people have seen him as just another money grabbing professional athlete these past few days. And he addressed it. (Did I understand that he said one person had even called his charity to complain about what he was doing? I'd love to see a written transcript.)

I have an eight year old nephew who just spent his first season as an NFL fan and I managed to recruit him to Cardinal Red. (Lives in LA where there is no home team.) I love that he will continue to have this uncommonly good man to root for and look up to.

And as far as the money goes? Book of Luke, Chapter 10, Verse 7
"And in the same house remain eating and drinking things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire."

Welcome back home, Kurt.

Actually...

Luke 21:1-4: "As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 'I tell you the truth,' he said, 'this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.' "

Also: Matthew 23:23-24: "[Jesus said] 'Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and ******. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former."

Of course Mitch when Kurt started his interview today the first words he said was: To be or not to be that is the question.

Think about that as it certainly says a lot about the situation and Kurt

I'm sorry but the identification with God and the haggling over wealth in the same context in the paragraphs below just didn't sit well with me. Even Kurt (as seemingly described) might be conflicted as well. Anyway, I am not judging anyone because I do not want the same judgment bestowed on me by God.

By the way, is KW giving some of that extra money to get Q signed since his salary hit the cap pretty hard?

Heard a great analogy about this on the radio the other day.

Should a Christian school teacher or plumber or artist that is worth a certain amount of money NOT ask for that certain amount of money? Should they settle for less money because they are Christians? Thought it was an interesting comment/question. Just something to ponder, not debate here.

In any case, the guy has signed. Now can we please leave his religion out of it (and the football forum) already?

O Praise Saint Kurt, the giver of all that is good in the world.

We are not worthy enough to be fans of his majestic splendor.

Halleluh!! The Lord has led his chosen disciple Kurt back into the desert to toil for a MERE $23 million ($19 million guaranteed). We should give up our first born in humble gratitude to the sacrifice made by Kurt the Christ.

Praise him to the heavens!!

Nice post Mitch! I think the best part of this being over is that the national media won't have a hay day blasting away at either the Cardinals for being 'cheap' or Kurt for being 'greedy'. Both come out of this situation looking good IMO. The Cardinals moved off their 20-million offer and upped the guaranteed portion of the contract to ease Kurt's concerns about year two of the deal. Kurt and his agent dropped the total dollars from 29-million to 23-million. It's all good!

Religion and politics are best kept separate, especially on sports discussion boards. :)

Pay the plumber and the artist. Religion should not be intertwined with good business practices in any endeavor including sports. Too bad these things got rolled together in this thread.
