Today we went to Kernan Hospital in Baltimore to have my son looked at again. The crew there determined that more work needed to be done, but they they weren't properly equipped there to handle it.

We were then sent to Johns Hopkins, where the man who literally wrote the book on Pediatric Orthapedics saw him and recommended that we have a plate screwed onto the bone to hold it in place until it is healed, at which point the plate will then be removed. The Doc says that Nico will be up and walking around in about a month and we can wait until spring to go back and remove the plates. He also said that that part of the proceedure isn't nearly as invasive as it sounds and will be done outpatient.

Obviously we aren't excited about our baby going under the knife, but we are more than relieved that the prognosis is so good and he should be back to 100% in a short time. Dominic is ecstatic about getting rid of this monstrous cast that lost it's luster after the fist few days. We may not even have to cancel our trip to Disney World for next week!

Anyway, surgery is tomorrow at noon and well be there overnight, so hopefully I'll have a positive update on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Thanks again.

Sending prayers and good thoughts your way.

You've been in my thoughts/prayers. HarleyRider was in a car accident the day he got home from Iraq, and his son's thigh snapped in half...he had a bar that screwed into his leg in four places for a long time...it was horribly traumatic for HR, as he came home to a house he'd never seen before (they had to move while he was in Iraq because their house was condemned...ugh), and then to have his son, wife, and himself injured in the accident...it was bad.

Kids are so resilient, though. His boy, like yours, took it all so well. I'm not saying any of this to downplay your boy's toughness, but to let you know that his son recovered fully, plays all sorts of sports & is perfectly normal. Sounds like your son is in great hands & should be just fine. I'll continue to keep you all in my prayers.

Thought and prayers are on the way. My son, at 3 year old, broke his leg as well. I can feel your pain.

MD - Very sorry to hear about your boy getting injured. Kids are mentally stronger than adults, and they heal a lot faster as well. I'm pulling for him to make a full and speedy recovery. Best wishes my friend.

When I was three, I spent eight weeks in a body cast, in traction, after an accident. People brought my candy, stuffed animals, toys, and everything else you can imagine. One day my mom and grandma were visiting me in my room, and my mom got a little uneasy because someone put a cross next to my bed (we're Jewish). My grandma looked at the cross, looked at my mom, and said "Leave it. We can use all the help we can get." I don't remember any of it, but the story always makes me smile.

Prayers to you and your family.

Naw, Field Goal kicker! ;)

I can't imagine how annoying a full body cast would be. I think I would have to be heavily sedated to keep from going freakin' crazy!

Anyway, my prayers go out for Nico and your entire family. God bless!

Update 3.0

I just wrote this, but there was an error on my pc and the whole thing was deleted. Apologetically, I dont have the time or energy to rewrite it as it was. I coach basketball and am gonna be late to our last practice before our first game if I'm not quick.

Nico's surgery was a success!!!!! It took just under two hours, and everything went smooth and exactly as planned. He has three scars on the side of his thight. Two are about 1/2 inch in length and the third is about 2". The Doc says the bone realigned perfectly and he will be as good as new in 6 weeks and likely beginnig to walk again in just 3!!!!!!!!! My daughter Ava just turned 1 and is still perfecting her walk, so he can practice with her soon.

We go to Disney World around this time every year with some of Kelly's (my girlfriend, Dominic and Ava's mom) family, but were assuming that we would have to cancel due to the obvious recent transgressions. The doctors however said that he was fine to travel and it wouldn't hurt him any. The way his mother and I see it, if he has any more fun there than he would here at our house on the couch then the trip is worth it. With that, we will be heading to Orlando tomorrow. I have also reserved dinner atop Cinderella's castle for Kelly and I plan to finally ask her to make an honest man out of me, so wish me luck. If she says no, it may make the rest of the trip a bit awkward :)

I also want to give a shot-out to Johns Hopkins. It is just an absolutely amazing hospital. I cant say enough about how great they were in every facet of care. What impressed me most was how much effort they put into putting smiles on the faces of the children who are there. They go way past above and beyond. I saw some of the saddest things I have ever witnessed in our two days there, but was more than uplifted by the strength, bravery and selflessness that oozes out of the place and its inhabitants. Remembering the older children who have been there for years and still smile and say hi and good luck to my son, as I wheeled him through the hall with his relatively insignificant injury, will always bring tears to my eyes. I cant wait for my little man to get all better so that I have some extra time to go volunteer up there.

Thanks again for all of your kind thoughts words and prayers.

OK, I'm done, back to playoff discussions.
