First of all, it was a tough to see CB Mike Jenkins go down with a non-contact knee injury. Then, to see Carson Palmer take a shot to the chops while on the turf after he once again played hot potato and threw the ball where the other team could make a play on it, was especially agonizing seeing as after he led the offense to a nice TD, there was ZERO point of having him go back into the game. Then, after running hard in the second half, apparently Stepfan Taylor suffered some sort of knee injury.

While the coaches and players are saying "it's pre-season" like it really doesn't matter, the problem for the fans is that for four of the five games we have watched the same script of self-destruction and missed opportunities---QBs throwing into crowded areas and getting easily picked off, defense having trouble covering receivers and special teams giving up big plays.

Clearly the coaches haven't addressed these issues emphatically enough, because they eerily persist---as does the national perception that Carson Palmer and the Cardinals are choke artists in games that matter most.

However, I don't know if you did this---but during this period of confusion and frustration, I keep thinking back to that 9 game stretch last year that was the most thrilling 9 game stretch I have ever seen from the Cardinals in my 53 years as a fan. And what made it even sweeter was the 6-0 the Cardinals went in prime-time games during that span, when typically they wilted under the heat of the big-game lights.

What concerns me the most is why other QBs the Cardinals are facing who have been with their teams for a mere matter of months are running their new offenses better than Carson Palmer---4th year in BA's offense) and Drew Stanton (5th year in BA's offense).

Why?

Many fans have been clamoring about not taking Dak Prescott in the 2016 NFL Draft---but---think about this---had the Cardinals taken Prescott, he and Matt Barkley would be splitting time in a so-called "competition" for the #3 QB job. In Arizona, Prescott would not be getting anywhere near the same preparation and playing time as he is in Dallas. It's just the way BA does things. He's all set with Palmer and Stanton and there's no changing that.

After all, BA's offense take a ton of time to learn. Ugh.

Which leads me to the observation that the last two weeks the QB who appeared (ironically) to be the most composed and in command of the offense has been Matt Barkley. Was Barkley light's-out? No. But he hung in there to let plays develop and he was fairly accurate. He MOVED the offense.

One will argue that he wasn't playing versus the 1s. True. But, neither was Drew Stanton all the time. And Stanton has had time with the first team offense. Stanton has not even played respectable football. Not even close.

What come to mind these days is the realization that with all the talent the Cardinals have on offense---the offense should be simplified, because the talent makes it easy. It doesn't need all these double fake screen and bubble passes because (a) they are not fooling anyone; (b) Palmer is not executing them--in fact teams are very conscious of his hot potato throws; and (c) when you can run the ball, you can RUN the ball for those yards.

The passing offense should be as simple as what is our best mismatch against their coverage---go and exploit it. That's what Kurt Warner was a master of. He drew up a 7 TD blueprint of how to win mismatches versus the Packers---all in one week's time.

I will offer individual player thoughts with my 53 projection tomorrow. For right now I just wanted to offer some thoughts on the big picture. I look forward to reading yours.

Did Coker ever get in the game? I'm guessing Barkley will be cut, and Coker put on the practice squad.

Palmer mentioned earlier during training camp that this year, they get to try new things that you typically can't in-season or even in pre-season due to roster turnover. When you have your primary receivers out or playing it safe - you aren't left many options - so you try things with what you have - if they work, great; if not and they lead to a pick-six, great. It's the preseason and everyone will be 0-0 in a couple of weeks.

One thing I won't be worried about is this team going into week one over confident.

Not worried about Palmer, not even a little.

Stanton is a 50% passer. One good throw, One bad. Two good throw, Two bad.

Defense will dial it up come real play which will help the DB's emensely. Sitting Peterson tonight was genious. It gave all our corners more work.

Running game appeared dominant at times tonight.

Not that it matters but the Ellington "non: catch is just wrong. SHould have been ruled a catch and a fumble. He caught the ball and took not one, not two, not three, but four steps before hitting the ground . Ridiculous.

After watching the first half, I liked what I saw of our run game. When the OL got moving laterally, it was fun to watch.

Shipley was surprisingly decent in space in the run game. Same with Toner. He looks like a natural at Guard. And he's alot more physical than you might expect from an Ivy League guy. I saw him really getting after it at times.

I don't know how good the guy is that Humphries was blocking on the edge, but DJ seemed to hold up in the passing game. Although he did let a guy slip by him once on the inside and tried to tackle him so he wouldn't hit Palmer - right after that play where Mathis whiffed on his guy and Palmer took a hit. There was a play where DJ's man tried a spin move and DJ wasn't fooled and kept the guy right in front of him.

I don't know what happened on that run play where Clowney went unblocked and blew up the play. It looked like Niklas didn't even see him lined up there on his shoulder.

Yeah it is a bummer that the Cardinals have to carry this rep for being playoff choke artists. After awhile, it becomes self fulling. Beating Green Bay was supposed to cure that. But the victory was so screwy and unconvincing, it might as well have been a loss.

Barkley threw the ball behind receivers on about 75% of his passes... he got lucky that his receivers made some nice catches. He still played better than Stanton though... that guy has been hot garbage this pre-season. Palmer will be fine when he's not running these gimmick plays... that 40yd pass to Fells was really nice. The cheap shot he took after the INT pissed me off... #1 it's an illegal hit (QB is off limits & it looked helmet to helmet), #2 it's pre-season, #3 it was completely unnecessary since Palmer was already on the ground... there's no reason to make that hit unless you're trying to give a guy a concussion & I hope he gets suspended a game for it (probably just a fine).

Our running game looked pretty good all night. Chris Johnson really had to fight for yards, but Ellington broke off a few nice runs.

It was obvious that we were missing Fitz & John Brown tonight... our WRs had trouble getting seperation. Jaron Brown made a nice catch in traffic. Golden & Jaxson Shipley made some nice grabs with the backups. Fells had the great catch & run.

It was also obvious that Pat P & Tyrann weren't playing, but I thought our CBs had great coverage on a few of their big plays & Houston's WRs got away with a lot of pushing off to create seperation. B. Williams played well tonight... he was beat on 1 deep throw, but it wasn't caught... other than that, I didn't hear his name called too much (which is a good thing as a CB). Bethel was the victim of the WR pushoff, but he was stride for stride with him & was probably in better position to make a play on the ball than the WR until the shove. I read that Bethel's foot starting getting sore during the game... not sure if it's another set-back or just something he's going to have to play through like he did last year.

Minter had a great A gap blitz, got to the QB quick & avoided the RB blocker... that was the fastest I've ever seen him move.

slanidrac16, you made a good point about Ellington's non-catch. I'll admit, I've been following FB since 1947, and watching it since the advent of TV, and I have NO IDEA when a catch is a catch.

Mitch, my worry, and I'm sure you agree is our #2 CB. As whoever plays there seems to smell like #2. BW looks like the best of a poor lot, but he'll take time to develop. Game planning will help some, but offensive GP by our opponents could well offset that help. And so far still not much of a PR from our vanilla defense. I have been impressed by:
1. Humphries.
2. Our running game.
And I'm not concerned about our backup QB's, because if they have to play the season is 'lost'. Still no QBOTF, is my only concern about our QB's.

Patrick Peterson & Tyrann Matthieu didn't play... so we had Brandon Williams, Mike Jenkins & Bethel (on 4-5 days of practice). Once Jenkins went down with a knee injury, Bethel was forced to play a lot more than he expected to. I still don't think he did too bad... he got beat on a deep pass early because he missed his jam at the LOS, but he was right with the guy on the TD catch & got shoved to create separation. Beyond those 2 guys, the rest didn't stand out positively to me. Alan Ball isn't playing yet because of injuries... which leaves us with a lot of guys playing (after the 1st qtr) that won't make the roster.... like Hartfield, Prater, Zamort, Asa Jackson, Harlan Miller (bubble guy just because he's a draft pick... probably practice squad).

The problem is...Bethel almost never turns around & finds the ball. That's a disaster when it happens on a regular basis & has been his #1 issue :bang:

I think it's safe to say that Bethel is not a starting NFL CB... Put him back on ST's and leave him there. And yes, I'm also freaked that we will be starting a CB who just learned the position last year - IN COLLEGE!
