Prince of Persia Finds A Director

Jerry Bruckheimer has been busy as of late with his Pirates franchise and his countless hit TV shows but still he has been working hard to get other film franchises off the ground. The IESB can exclusively report that his upcoming film, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, has found a director and a release date.

Michael Bay is directing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for a Summer ’09 release.

The IESB was able to confirm with Disney Studios that they are hopeful that Michael Bay will indeed direct the picture right after he is done with this Summer’s blockbuster, Transformers.

You might remember a couple of years ago when we confirmed that Bay was behind Transformers just as he was finishing The Island. So now, just as he is finishing up Transformers, we are announcing that he will in fact be behind Bruckheimer’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

This feature film adaptation is “based on the video game, which follows an adventurous prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world.”

The original creator of the game, Jordan Mechner, has said that "Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story - much as 'Pirates' [of the Caribbean] did with the theme park ride."

Casting/Directing news from The Hollywood Reporter:

Jake Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Gemma Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Bruckheimer is producing, while Mike Stenson, Chad Oman and Patrick McCormick are exec producing.

Mike Newell is directing.

Production is set to start in July.

btw, that was a great game. Should be an interesting movie. I'm glad to see Uwe Boll is not directing it. Michael Bay movies are thin on plot, but man do they look amazing.

I hate Hollywood. They are taking everything I love and tearing it apart. First Michael Bay ruins Transformers, GI Joe might be the worst film since Manos Hands of Fate (I even heard the Director got fired during editing... his job was done and he got fired because the editor said 'you guys really need to take a look at this piece of ****'), Jake Gyllenhaal is the main role in Prince of Persia, and later Keanu Reeves will be playing Spike in the LIVE ACTION (OMFG! NO! WHY?!?!) version of Cowboy Beebop.

Why doesn't everyone in Hollywood just take a good whack at my nuts while they make these films.

Seriously... Jake Gyllenhaal? Words cannot describe my outrage. I do not understand the infatuation with the Gyllehaal children and Shia LaBeouf (Sorry for the unnecessary jab at the actor who has a hard on for his own mother). They are terrible actors yet continue to get work. None of them can act past their own personas.

What movie has Jake been in where does not played a downtrodden teenager who has quirky brilliant side to him but is socially awkward? The only film I can think of is Zodiac, and he still played a loner in that too; so I am really at a loss here. Whenever I see him in a movie I have to look away... I cannot stand that face. I have seen burn ward patients who look better than poor little Jake.

Just down right awful.

Edit: Michael Bay was rumored to do this film but later pulled out when he found out that he could not put explosions in every five minutes.

Michael Bay has already taken his far share of whacks at my junk throughout the years... there is a fairly big line building up though, so he would have to jump to the back. It is about a mile long, but I set up explosions every 25 feet while people wait... that should give dear old Michael enough to keep himself entertained. If not I will increase it to every 10 feet just for him.

But really, there is Rendition and Jarhead that come to mind

I cannot speak for Rendition as I have not seen it, but thank you for reminding me of Jarhead. Relatively meh and still thought Jake was iffy in it.
