Professional Sports Average Weekly Pay

From USA Today:

Average weekly pay for athletes in Hockey, MLB, NFL, and NBA. This is from memory but close enough. Really very different from what I would have guessed. This is WEEKLY Pay not monthly:

NHL: $9000 + Number One
NBA: $9000 + Number Two
MlB: $7000 + Number Three
NFL $6000 + Number Four

If you would have guessed this order you are a lot smarter than me. I would have put the NBA at number one and Hockey last. I would guess that hockey players are the toughest of the bunch and take the worst beatings on average. Few of them have any teeth after a few years. Dan Hampton the former Bear great lives in Little Rock. I have not seen him in some years but he could baarly walk and looked like ever step was agony when I did see him last. I think he had something like 10 operations on his knees.

I think roster size has a lot to do with it. NHL and NBA have the smallest rosters. Followed by MLB and the NFL. So in reality the larger sizes would preclude having more min. salaried players than the NHL and NBA.

I believe that the "+" means "or More". The "Number One, Number Two,..." is the ranking. Two separate things.

I knew one of you bright eyed guys would pick up on that. Still, hockey? Who would ever have thought? Guys like Tiger or Lefty make all of them look like pikers when it comes to earnings. I think Tiger was headed to becoming a billionaire before he lost his magic and easily surpassed earning 100 million in a year. When you are really good and only have to depend on yourself that is where astronomical earnings are available. I wonder what Ali made in his prime years?

I wonder what happened to Tiger other than the bad publicity? He was anointed as the greatest golfer of all time a bit to early. Among other things to be the greatest you need longevity in the sport like Arnold or Jack or Ben Hogan who did it for decades. I hope Tiger can find his magic once again but he has had a bad start this year.

According to the latest numbers in Golf Magazine Tiger has already passed the 1 billion mark.. These guys (golfers) make far more money in endorsements than on the tour. Tiger for example made just over 1 million in tour winnings but had over 100 million in endorsements. Phil had over 4 million in winnings and over 70 million in endorsements.

Hell Arnold had zero in winnings and still made over 40 million. Golf is where the real money is.
