The New York Giants have made edge rusher Abdul Carter one of the most resplendent Penn State football NFL Draft picks of all time.

The Nittany Lion All-American was the third pick in Thursday night's opening round of the draft in Green Bay. He followed top draft choices, quarterback Cam Ward (No. 1, Tennessee Titans) and all-around Travis Hunter (No. 2, Jacksonville Jaguars).

Carter is Penn State's top draft pick since running back Saquon Barkley went No. 2 to these same New York Giants in 2018. He's just the 13th top-five Penn State draft choice since 1940.

There's also this: Carter is Penn State's top defensive line draft pick in 25 years − since Courtney Brown went No. 1 to the Cleveland Browns.

Carter expects to be joined later in tonight's first round by tight end and teammate Tyler Warren. The two could become the first PSU pair picked in the Top 10 since Brown and linebacker LaVar Arrington were the first and second picks of the 2000 draft.

What Abdul Carter brings to the New York Giants in 2025 NFL Draft

Carter’s impressive move from linebacker to edge rusher last year has only accentuated his mass NFL appeal: As in how the best is yet to come for the generational talent who's still learning his role. In just one season as a full-time pass-rusher, Carter led all FBS defenders in tackles for loss.

The consensus All-American combines superior quickness and explosion off the line of scrimmage with a relentless game motor.

That elite quickness and mobility should help him provide exceptional versatility. He is adept in pass coverage and can line up in an array of positions to best use his rush skills.

Carter featured possibly the quickest first step and most impressive explosion off the line of scrimmage in college football.

He played defensive end for the first time at 250 pounds in 2024 and looked lean doing it. He will be asked to become stronger and potentially bigger going into his rookie season and should fare well without losing his trademark pass-rushing burst.

His toughness cannot be questioned, as well. He dominated Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinals with an injured shoulder − the issue that reportedly kept him from working out for NFL teams the past few months.

Abdul Carter stats with Penn State football

Carter led all FBS defenders with 23.5 tackles for loss last season, including a Big Ten-leading 12 sacks.

He also added nine quarterback hurries, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles for the Top 10 Nittany Lion defense.

Abdul Carter's NFL comparison

Though often compared to Parsons with his Penn State pedigree, Carter may be even more like Houston Texans edge rusher Will Anderson. Carter and Anderson, the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2023, both showcase elite pass-rushing skills at scrimmage while being able to adeptly drop into pass coverage.
