Bale Joining Depp in Mann's Public Enemies
Source: Variety
January 11, 2008

Variety says that Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in Michael Mann's upcoming Public Enemies.

According to the trade, Bale will play Melvin Purvis, the legendary FBI agent who led the manhunt for John Dillinger. Depp is starring as Dillinger in the film, which is set up at Universal and is slated to begin production in March.

Mann is producing via his Forward Pass, with Kevin Misher and his Misher Films. Jane Rosenthal of Tribeca is executive producing.

An original movie? Wow, who would ever do that?

I know this will make me unpopular again, but I thought this movie, while well-made, was too long and boring. I nearly fell asleep twice during it. Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard were great, but Christian Bale just mailed it in (no surprise here). Good period piece, but just not exciting or interesting enough.

i have a hard time convincing myself that I can believe depp as dillinger or that they will do justice to the dillinger story

not sure the scope of the movie, but I would like a broader period piece about the time where the crooks were using the technology and sentiment to stay one step ahead of the law leading to the formation of the FBI

dillinger is a great story so I think I would have a great potential to be disapointed in the story telling on this one

Heard a review somewhat like Chap's -- that it's too stylized, basically, but Depp is great. I'm going to see it this afternoon with a couple friends.

Overall was a good movie. Somewhat slow at times which made it seem longer than the 2 hours and 20 minutes it is. I wish they would have spent some more time explaining J. Edgar Hoover's obsession with Dillinger. They showed a little, but for how caught up Hoover really was with him it wasn't enough. On a side note, I hope at some point they make a serious biopic about Hoover because he was an absolutly amazing character. So many stories and how he controlled many politicians seems to scream movie. Sooner or later I guess.

I agree with you azsportsfan01 -- good but by no means great. Needed much tighter editing. Johnny Depp was outstanding, Billy Cruddup makes a really slimy early Hoover and we also wondered why there hasn't been a movie about him.

One of my friends recenly read an article about how J Edgar Hoover tore down Melvin Purvis's career and tried to bury his name soon after he got Dillinger. Supposedly it was because Purvis would not be as brutal in getting info as Hoover wanted, but my guess, it was more to harvest all the acclaim for 'his' agency.

And the movie is a bit historically inaccurate for reasons that are hard to understand.

I recently watched it and I agree with Chaplin. While I thought the movie was well done and the acting was great, the story seemed flat. With 2.5 hours and that cast, they could have done much better.
