Continuing dissatisfaction with on roster punters appears to have led the Cards to trade for Andy Lee. I'm hearing the only debate is about the highest round of conditional pick!

This is FANTASTIC news! Lee was a top 1-2 punter in the league for years, and while he may have lost a yard or two, he's till probably top 5. He already took a pay cut for the next 2 years so he comes on the cheap. MASSIVE upgrade - cmon Keim, git'r done!!

If true, we have officially switched from Pittsburgh West to San Francisco Southwest (Bethea, Dawson, Gabbert, Lee).

Why is Carolina looking to unload him??

They've got a young guy in camp that they apparently like. No doubt cheaper, though Lee is pretty cheap now too ($1.1m this year and $1m next, I believe). Shouldn't take much to pry Lee away if they're ready to move on. And he spent 2 years with Dawson at Santa Clara - if they had any kind of positive relationship, should help get it done, one would think.

pointing out from that article:

Mike Jurecki of 98.7 FM, Arizona’s Sports Station, has learned that the Cardinals do have interest in Lee, and by having four compensatory selections in the 2018 NFL Draft — a third-round, a fourth-round and two sixth-round picks — could have the requisite resources to get a deal done prior to the regular season opener in Detroit.

Torn hamstring last year, that scares me a bit. But he does have ok numbers for the preseason, 43.8 net 7th in the preseason. Carolinas other punter is 2nd at 44.7 net, so that combined with Lee's salary makes sense why they would trade him.

However you know what is surprising Richie Leon has a net of 43.4, 10th this preseason. So how bad is he really?

If we give up more than a 6th though I will be pissed. Really I don't want to give more than a 7th

How well did he punt before he got hurt? Does he still have it?

I like Lee as much as the next guy, but I don't think our punting has been bad this preseason. The probably should focus on the coverage teams instead.

Last year avg of 49.1 which was second and 40.4 net for the regular season which is 14th.

For comparison
Matt Wile was 43.7 and 37.5 net for us last year
Drew Butler was 42.2 and 35.6 net

So he should definitely be an improvement - but he may just be an average punter at this point.
