You’ve been under attack pretty much since holding out your rookie year. In your own opinion, have you developed into the player you thought you would be at this point?

No, definitely not. I think I have a lot further to go. I have to be able to take constructive criticism instead of just going in the tank. I think that is my problem a lot of the time. I have to listen and learn. I have a lot to do to develop and I think this is the right coaching staff to get me where I need to be.

Coach Green has said you and defensive line coach Deek Pollard found each other at just about the right time. Pollard seems to be tough on all of you guys, do you feel like you are learning a lot from him?

I think that is a good assessment. People forget I am only 23 years old. Deek has been around and he told me some real stuff and that I need to grow up and he’s right. I need to have accountability and I need to do what I was brought here to do for this franchise. I think I have grown a lot but I have a lot more growing to do and I think being with Deek is going to help me.

Yeah...but Wendell was a first rounder. If I remember correctly, Randle wasn't drafted. The expectations are much different.

Admitting you have a problem is the biggest part of fixing it. Bryant has admitted his faults. Green is the type of coach to help Bryant. What I liked most about the interview was Bryants reference to the new defensive system. No more passive read and react. He said we have an attack style now. I would look for the whole defensive line to show improvement. The NFL is way too fast to have your defensive players "reading and reacting".

The Cards basically wasted this guy's rookie season. I've never understood why a team will dispute a few hundred grand or contract features like escalators or incentive bonuses when it results in a holdout well into the season. Why even draft the player in the first place? Bryant not only ended up missing training camp and much of his rookie season, but he ended up taking less than market value for where he was drafted. He was "de-incented" from day one. That is not productive for either side.

True, my point is that Denny saw the potential in Randle and challenged him and gave him an opportunity to succeed. IMO he is doing the same with Bryant.

I gotta say, I was completely impressed with this interview, I think it took guts for him to be that up front about himself. I'm pulling for him. I hope he kicks ass this season.

Not really, Green's first year was 92, Randle's first year was 90. In 91 Randle had 9.5 sacks, 92 under Green 11.5, he certainly had his best years under Green, but he was already on the verge when Green got there.

But he was in his 3rd year ala Bryant. As excited as I am about Dockett and King, my gut tells me for this defense to be good, we need Wendell to win that job at the very least on run downs. I just don't think either Dockett or King is big enough to hold up against the run.

On John Randall--

unlike Wendell -- Randall while undersized, was an absolute maniac.

Green showed up and put Randall in a position -- the under tackle -- that was a perfect fit for an undersized, but very quick, and very, very intense defensive tackle.

Wendell on the other hand has ideal size, but seems to lack intensity, or "mean-ness"

lets hope this new defense suits him

What a joke. Rookie holds-out for "his money" and has not played a down in the NFL. After payed very well for his opportunity in the NFL, he has failed to live up to the value of a #1 pick. By far.

He BETTER put up this year or he will be yet another draft bust...who was the GM / coach...was it Fergerson / Mac that drafted him?

Now I will read the article, and see if I am converted to this welcome-party for the "new" Wendell.

OK, I read the rest of the article. I am glad to hear that Wendell is working so hard on his college degree. Does he sense that he will need it very soon? I do wonder why all the money he is getting to be a professional foot-ball player has not made him a "key-contributor".

Wendell and Starks both remain on my performe-or-cut box, if I only had the power of Bidwill....my opinon would matter.
