Well, since the Patriots don't need Welker to return kicks and punts, I guess his value this season should be measured only by how he produces as a receiver. So let's review the week 1 box scores, shall we?

Wes Welker 6-61 1TD LG13
Anquan Boldin 4-22 1TD LG7

Doesn't look like a laughable comparison so far, eh? Just for grins, I'm gonna keep an eye on this matchup as the season progresses. And hope--for the Cardinals sake--that Boldin has better weeks than this one.

:biglaugh: Hmm, Boldin #1 option and being covered by other teams best Defensive back personnel, or Welker #3 option being covered by much lesser talent. Too freaking funny.

You've lost all inkling of credibilty.

Lets examine career stats:

Boldin 4 years in the league: 342 receptions, 4627 yards, 21 TD's
Wes 4 years in the league: 102 receptions, 1185 yards, 2 TD's

your post is best summed up with this little tidbit from Billy Madison:

"...what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

By quoting the greatest movie of all time you have just become my favorite poster in he world. I will follow you anywhere.

A proper response from him would be.... "Loyalty, I thank you, for verballizing the sh-t out of me. I see things so clearly now I choose my destiny."

I remembered this thread after reading Paul Zimmerman's Inside the NFL column today on SI.com and thought I'd share the following:

Good quote about the Patriots' Wes Welker from a scout I talked to. "They found another Troy Brown. He's what Brown gave them eight years ago." Welker might be the best receiver I ever saw adjusting to hot reads. The really good ones have to be well enough timed up with the QB so they know exactly where to be, and then they have to be prepared to make the awkward catch, since the pass will be thrown under duress. Welker not only does that, but he can also put a move on a defender to make him miss, as he's making the tough grab. He saved their ass against the Cowboys. Sure, Brady was terrific but Welker was my MVP of the game.

How could the Dolphins have let him go? When they drafted Ted Ginn in the first round, they said they wanted someone who could move the chains and return kicks for them. Hey, they had one already. His name was Wes Welker.

Welker was 11-124 with 7 first downs and 2 TDs against Dallas, and he's caught 38-386 after six games. Projects to 100+ catches and 1,000+ yards for a full season. And he's been running back punts (11.6 ypr) and the occasional kickoff (26.5) too.

Comparing Wes Welker to Anquan Boldin this season is pointless, especially with Boldin out injured. But as part of the Patriots offense, with Tom Brady throwing to him, maybe Peter King wasn't entirely delusional to rate Welker as high as he did.

His forecast of rating him high is sound. To rate him Higher than Q is downright pathetic still.

Welker is awesome as a 2nd or 3rd WR, but I don't think he could have half the stats he does as a number 1. JMHO

CFMD:

Bad luck? Hardly. It takes hard work and persistence to be as bad as Miami has been this year. From free agency (letting Welker go) to the draft (passing on Brady Quinn) to in-season trades (dumping Chris Chambers), the Dolphins' personnel moves this season have been positively Graves-like.

But I hear they have a plan. It involves conserving money under the cap. ;)

Anybody else think Belichick is intentionally running up the score in games because he's mad he got caught cheating and wants to show everyone he can win without cheating?

I mean how much more obvious can they be with running up the score this year?

Great team but I think people are going to get sick of them throwing with big leads and start taking some cheapshots on Brady if they don't stop it.

I agree Russ its a good way to piss someone off and lose one of their playmakers! If they lose Brady wow that would pretty much kill them!

Yea its pretty ridiculous being up by like 21 and throwing a TD pass to moss with like 2 min left....

Are you guys serious?

This isn't Pee Wee football. Who cares if they throw it to Moss with 2 minutes left. If anything, it should motivate any team playing against NE to not get abused.

Look for this week to be the best example of running up the score yet. Last time they played, I remember the Pats got shut out and Brady only thrw for like 75yds. After the game Bitchicheck was going nuts and accusing Miami of stealing their plays. Come to think of it, maybe thats where he got the idea.

...and you expect class from someone caught cheating?
That's kind of the point.

DCR, you need to figure out where you stand on this. On one hand you say, "it's no big thing," and then you turn around and say "it's a classless act from a classless organization." Which is it?

Bill Simmons wrote an article on this earlier in the week. Basically that the Pats are on a big FU missing to everyone in the league this year.

It is a classless act that doesn't mean too much?

I dunno Russ. there is a big difference between running it up and just being so much beter than your opponent you cant help but score. You cant expect player sthat are playing not to give it their all. Thats how injuries happen IMO. To me the Pats are just that good. They didnt look like they were intentionally trying to run up the score in that last scoring drive in Dallas IMO.

Yes, Inside the NFL covered that last night. It's eventually going to catch up with them with either a fight or a cheap shot from an opponent.

Talk to us at the end of the year, and see who has had a better season, Welker or Boldin.

Stout:

O.K., since Wes Welker's season is finally over, let's see:

Regular Season
Wes Welker 16 gms 112-1175 10.5 ypc 65 lg 8TD 65 1st 640 yac
Anquan Boldin 12 gms 71-853 12.0 ypc 44 lg 9TD 43 1st 372 yac

And after tying with T.J. Houshmandzadeh for the league's most regular-season receptions, Welker added 27 catches for 213 yards and two more TDs in three postseason games, including a Super Bowl-record 11 catches in the Patriots' loss.

No criticism intended to Boldin, who played through injury to help his team and had a decent year considering the circumstances. But if Peter King got anything wrong in rating Welker, it's that he rated him too low.

You are still being delusional. Put Boldin against 3rd string single coverage for 16 games and I'd be willing to bet he would rewrite every recieving stat in history.

The coaching staff should try to get that matchup.

How often did he get to play slot this year? Wasn't there talk of that in the offseason?

As far as I am concerned, Welker is a one trick pony in a system that was made to help him out. There is no doubt Welker excelled in his role, but I can guarantee that if all 32 teams had to choose between Boldin and Welker, the choice would be Boldin.

Welker to the Pats = Stokely to the Colts... What has stokely done before or after the Colts?

Caught a TD pass in a Super Bowl before. Worse guys to be "before" on.

After he had a mediocre year on a struggling team and then had an Achilles problem... which is a pretty big problem.
