St. Pierre signing on hold in Arizona

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 14, 2010 9:44 AM ET
The Cardinals told Brian St. Pierre to cancel his trip to town this week.

The third-string quarterback was expected to re-sign with the team, but Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports that has been delayed.

Florio reported last week the Cardinals have some interest in Marc Bulger. PFT stands by that report, and this news regarding St. Pierre supports it.

At the very least, it appears Arizona will keep their options open through the draft.

I think its on hold because the Cards have interest in a qb at the Draft.

Well, I'd be very surprised if Bulger is willing to come to AZ to compete with Anderson at #2. He probably can do better for himself. A developmental QB, late in the draft would make sense, and, frankly - signing St-Pierre now or after the draft is a bit irrelevant. It's the only job on the table for this guy, I would imagine.

I think it' smore of they are waiting to see how the draft shakes out. They may be serious about taking a QB in the later rounds and he will be the 3rd QB.

Bulger at this point should be competing for a #2 slot until he has regained his confidence and healed up.

I guess there is always the possibility of signing Bulger, drafting a QB and then have Bulger and Anderson fight for #2 and then drop the loser. However, I have no clue how that would mess with the cap space.

There's no cap.

I think the Card's should go after Bulger and if they do, I wouldn't be surprsied if he saw significant playing time. With protection he can be very very effective.

As for who's the 1st, 2nd or 3rd QB keep in mind there's a "third-quarterback rule" which enables teams to have an "emergency quarterback" available who was not on the 45-man game-day active roster.

Everybody thinks they understand the NFL's "third-quarterback" rule. But do they?

The rule states that if a third quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game thereafter at any position BUT it is a COACH'S decision as to whether a third quarterback will be used. Neither of the active quarterbacks has to be injured for a team to use its third quarterback.

That being the case, I could see us "mixing and matching" 3 experienced QB's if we had to.

Its difficult to see why Bulger would come to AZ to compete with Anderson for the #2 QB spot unless he's been told that he has chance to even fight for the 1st spot in camp. Another possibility is that the market for him has dried up as the teams in real need of a QB are banking on the draft and dont see further potential in Marc. Too many questions and no real indication to go on at the moment so i guess we'll see after the draft.

Bulger is shakier than a shell shocked victim of trench pounding in WW1.

When he hears the footsteps of his kids running through the dining room, he ducks under the table.

No thanks!

And the cycle of cluelessness and denial continues. As the OP said at the very bottom of his post, this means it is probably because we're thinking about drafting a QB. We're not signing Bulger to suddenly come in and start. Stop the madness!

I still think the reason BSP is out of the picture is because the Cards fear he can't pass a physical or he already failed one.

He needs some time to heal.
Being the 3rd guy on the bench is a good way to do that.
And while I have always been a fan of bringing him in, keep in mind, even at his peak he wasn't at Warner level.
Just an expectations check.
