David Johnson has changed the need for a great QBOTF. Prior to his arrival the Cards had to throw deep frequently to open up throwing lanes. Drives were often 6 plays not 12. This tired out the defense. DJ changed that by making play option a huge weapon. Teams must respect his running ability so they have to overplay his potential runs. As such passing lanes are more open and double coverage is less frequent. A competent QB can win with that alignment. Sure it would be nice to have the next Kurt Warner, however a Joe Flaco could be very successful here.

To me that means if the Cards can't draft what they want (I wouldn't panic and make a huge trade to move up next year), they can fill the position via trade or free agency. Of course there's the issue if BA can play with that mentality. I think he showed he can in several games last season. The Cards, IMO, need one more top possession receiver when Fitz leaves. Again that type of free agent seems always available. Then they will have the most balanced offense in the NFC. I'd love to see a great QB, but this team has the basis of success with what they have in place.
Sorry BA won't rush DJ enough to force whole scale run defense and help play action - opponents will stick with pass defenders - so some of what you say is true - but it is like light beer - taste like it has a hole in it!

Williams ran 4.37, Boldin ran 4.71

Yeah I know he ran 4.37 at his pro day. However maybe it's just me, but during the Senior Bowl, Williams didn't look like he had sub 4.4 speed. Am I far off here? I really didn't see that 4.37 speed with the pads on.

You are 100% correct.

I just would pick another player. Boldin didn't get run down too much in his younger days.

Football speed is football speed. Track speed is track speed. We will see with Mr. Williams.

I agree with your overall logic, but:
Running backs don't last as long as QB's do. As awful as it sounds, DJ could very well only last another 2 years before injuries diminish or end his career. Hence, don't count on DJ to totally eliminate the need for a great QBOF. I'm greedy, I want BOTH.

What about Teddy are you a huge fan of???? His deep passes of about 8 yards excite you??? Lol..... he is in no way shape or form a "BA" QB... Nowhere close to the right skill set..

I hope the Vikings are stupid & keep Bridewater. I'd rather have Bradford. He's far more accurate & has the gunslinger mentality that BA likes.

There is a chance that both Mike Glennon and Teddy Bridgewater will be available next offseason.

I am still a HUGE fan of Teddy Bridgewater, and think he would be a steal if the Vikings let him walk.

Tough to play football, let alone QB on 1 leg.

I recall somewhere that Q - when healthy - ran better than 4.71 but most teams did't pick that up.

I don't necessarily buy into the argument that -- because you have a really good RB, you don't need to have Superman as your QB.

Sounds good on paper, but the fallacy is that things are seldom frozen in time. Teams can adjust to neutralize D Johnson. David could get injured. Meanwhile, we'd be without a quality QB to carry the team.

I'd rather we set a higher goal, but buy time until our QBOF becomes available by getting by with the QB's we've got and bolstering our depth by bringing in another vet we can still win with.

(Kind of like a "Delay...Delay...Delay...Pounce!" strategy).

Settling for less would be like signing Derek Anderson because we have a good RB. I just don't think it would worrk

I have my doubts that Palmer retires this year. I think it depends on how much dirt he has to eat this year. If he's protected and given time to throw, if he is able to avoid injury, I think the man returns. I believe BASK thinks that way, too. If they don't, it's only because they're aware that adequate talent will be out there next year.

Yep, I said "adequate talent" because Harry is generally right. I'm not saying David Johnson is our savior -- who knows if he'll be healthy all year? -- but given enough weapons, any team can win with an adequate QB. You need a superstar to overcome a team's deficiencies. Limit those deficiencies and a solid, capable QB at this level can lead a team. We'll have options.

The problem with the QBOF is, when they don't pan out (and most don't pan out), your team sucks for years. Everything is geared toward making the team's newest multi-millionaire a superstar. Game plans are altered, personnel is shifted, and it's all worth it if the new guy has the magic. More often, the player displays just enough of a touch that he stays the #1 QB season after season...and you count it as a victory if your team even glimpses the playoffs.

Points well taken, but I still struggle with the notion that you shouldn't go balls out to sign the BQBA (Best QB Available) because you think your running attack will carry the day.

I'd feel more comfortable going all out to sign the most talented players at every position all the time. Pull punches and all kinds of weird things can upset the apple cart.

No team gets to the playoffs ( I know Houston did ), without a top talent QB. Waiting for the guaranteed QB draftee is a recipe for disaster. Choose from the available pool and develop.

Possible flaw in cause & effect:

Team with meh QB wins the Super Bowl. Meh QB suddenly is anointed Franchise QB because of what the team accomplished.
