I don't understand -- Whiz challeneged the spot of the ball, and successfully -- the ball was indeed moved. That gave us an extra yard.

So how come we still lost the challenge? The question of getting a first down wasn't the issue - it was simply the spot of the ball.

Wasn't it?

Thats what I thought too, but apparently that's not how they used the rule today.

I believe he challenged the spot and the 1st down result. The ref mentioned that we'd lose the challenge if the result was not a 1st down. So he had to win both arguments. I wonder if you can challenge a spot independent of the results.

The challenge is that the ball reached the line to gain for the first down, since the spot was still horrible, we lost the challenge.

He challenged the first down.

At first I thought it was a silly challenge because I thought Breaston was down before he extended out, then the EZ cam showed he was laying on the safety when he extended the ball. With that said, the ball was clearly across the 1st down line.

We got the TD, thats all that matters

Still worth it as it made the 4th down play about a couple of inches short.

The odd thing is the refs messed up the spot and we are still charged with a timeout.

Prolly some golbuldigook in the rules that some lawyer wrote that goes like this:

Whenever and if at such time any call on the field of play is challenged by the Arizona Cardinals, the offical call shall only be overruled should it be in the favor of the opposing team etc etc

regardless of spot, I like that he goes for it on fourth down. Way too many coaches are scared of fourth and a foot and he definitely showed confidence in his team by going for it on multiple fourth downs.

Great game by the whole team.

The question I would have is whether you can challenge the spotting of the ball independent of the down and if it so happens that spot creates a first down, shouldn't you still get that result? Do you have to challenge only a first down ruling? What if you've got first and goal and you get a horrible spot, you challenge just to get a better spot on second down. Can't you do that? If so, is the rule that if you challenge only the spot on third down, if the spot does show its actually a first down, do they not give you the first down because that wasn't your challenge and they just give you the extra yardage? If so, that would be a ridiculous result. Anyway, hopefully someone knows what the deal is. The deal today seemed ridiculous. They were clearly wrong in the spotting of the ball so why should we lose a time out? The extra yardage was worth the time out we traded it for, but that's not the point.

You know, Breaston's awareness on that play was incredible...and he reached the ball out with both hands on it, to keep it secure.

What about the Gandy personal foul play. They even said the foul was after the play. No measurement at all. I thought it would be 1st and 15?

I taped the game.

There were at least 5 times we got horrible spots, it was deliberate all game long.

Someone will video skills needs to edit a neat package of them and send them to the league office, ABOUT 50,000 times over.

Q was screaming about it later on in the game but I saw the ref move the ball back at least 3 times before that for no reason.

It never happened to the 49ers it was a horribly called game and I'm thrilled we won so it dosen't have to sound like sour grapes but watch the replays and watch the spotting of the ball and tell me it wasn't on purpose.

A agree. The ball spotting was horrible all game long against the Cards.

Another thing I didn't undestand was on the Gandy penalty. Why did we loose a down on that play. It was 3rd down when Hightower ran the ball, so after the Gandy penalty it still should have been 3rd down. How did it get to be 4th down?

The refs really tried to stick it to the cards with the ball spotting. I'm glad the cards were able to overcome those bad spots.

That was equally lame, it was after the play, it looked to me as if he made the first down so it should have been 1st an goal from just outside the 15.

It seemed also a time or two they were smiling calling things against the Cardinals.

It starts to sound like you're crazy but that was a very suspicious crew, glad we won and it's over.

I remember on one play, the ball was right on the yellow line and the ref spotted it. Then, he picks it up and moves it back six inches. It was a play by Boldin on that long 4th quarter drive. I was yelling, "WTF!!?!" But, we still got the measurement by the nose of the ball. But, man, I couldn't believe what I saw.

You have all heard it said, "good teams beat the other team and the bad calls"!

No I've never heard that.

:D

I honestly think it was more than just bad calls and I will file a complaint, as a fan I don't need to put up with this kind of stuff when I pay them my money.
