With three weeks to go for our first game, I've been thinking about our final 53 man roster. And I have a number of questions. By position?

1. QB-Will we find a place for Chris Steveler?
2. RB-Benjamin vs. Foster? Seems that Eno is the better runner and DJ is better on ST.
3. TE-Looks like three with Williams, Arnold and Daniels. But I'm a little worried by Maxx not being on the field for a couple of days.
4. WR-Most guys seem to be going with the usual seven, and I am also.
5. OL-Expecting nine, with Murray the RT. Jones, Beachum and Gaillard seem like locks. The ninth guy will probably be Garcia with Gonzalez having a shot.

Look for both offense and defense to have a 25 man roster.

1. DL-Top six seem set with the seventh between Dogbe and Mills. I have Bullard and the two rookies as #4, 5 and 6.
2. ILB-Simmons and Weaver back up the starters. Fight between Turner and Vallejo for the 5th and final spot.
3. OLB-Behind starters, Gardeck and Reddick/Fitts if we go with five. Or just one (Reddick or Fitts) if four.
4. DB's-10. Question is, is it five CB's and five Safeties. Safeties, three are set. If only four it will be a battle between Washington and Banjo, with both making it if we have five.
5. CB's-Five or six, with only two locks (PP and Murphy).
Webb, if he makes the team will start opposite PP. If he's not starting he will be departing, and we'll look for another FA vet.
First CB off the bench-Jones.
The future (pick one or two) is between Kevin Peterson, and the two UDFA rooks, Whittaker and Lewis.

Anyone else thinking about our Final 53?

It's basically impossible to give this any informed thought without preseason games

We are just going to have to hope we have some young guys flashing in practice that are making decisions difficult.

The good news is stashing people on the practice squad should be a whole lot easier since other teams won't know anything about how they have performed for us.

Great post, Garth! I have some thoughts I want to share with you.

“3. TE-Looks like three with Williams, Arnold and Daniels. But I'm a little worried by Maxx not being on the field for a couple of days.”

I might be completely wrong here, but I just find it fascinating that they signed Dylan Cantrell, who Kingsbury had been with for a long time in college. He is being converted to tight end, and I just have this idea that Kingsbury must have a very clear vision of how he wants to deploy him.

I really wish we could have heard more from training camp, so we would know something about this situation.

“5. OL-Expecting nine, with Murray the RT. Jones, Beachum and Gaillard seem like locks. The ninth guy will probably be Garcia with Gonzalez having a shot.”

I think it would be very intriguing if Gonzalez makes the final roster. He is an undrafted free agent, and there seems to be at least eight or nine guys you would expect to make the team. If he beats out one of them in this weird offseason – I think that would be intriguing.

3. OLB-Behind starters, Gardeck and Reddick/Fitts if we go with five. Or just one (Reddick or Fitts) if four.

Do you have Gardeck as an edge rusher? That is a fascinating thought. I guess he would be good at setting the run, and he obviously has a high motor. Maybe it could work.

They won't keep Streveler on the 53. They will put him on the PS as one of the protected players that can't be claimed.

Couple of things:
Proximo, I posted this not because I thought that my 53 would be correct, for reasons you mentioned, but just to get some discussion about the team. I was hoping that posters would chip in with their 2c.

Gandhi, I have no idea how Gardeck will do on the outside, but did read that the team had moved him to OLB. Based on his ST play I assume he's a lock for the 53.

As for Cantrell, I'm surprised that I haven't heard more about him. But, recently I read that he hasn't been on the field for a while. Or did I get that wrong?

Still hoping to hear from others.

Not necessarily. Weaver would almost certainly be a back-up for the mike backer, but won't be for the weak side. He would likely only be on the field for run down regardless.

I wouldn't take line backer 40 times as gospel. The 40 at the combine is more about technique than speed. How many linebackers have you seen run from a 3 point stance in a game?

I doubt he's any slower than Hicks or Campbell.

And technically Weaver is the 4th backer. As we normally only use 2 and Hicks, Campbell and Simmons will be above him.

In passing downs, I'm pretty sure that Hicks will be replaced, and we'll go with Simmons and Campbell. We should do MUCH better against TE's. JMO.

Campbell is worse in pass pro that Hicks.

Campbells strong suit is vs the run.

Brit, have to disagree with you on this.

I always go with the fans on this like this and the Falcholics (their version of RoTB) says,

"As we wrote recently, Campbell has proven to be a rock solid tackler and useful player against the run, as well as a capable pass rusher when he’s given the opportunity. Coverage continues to be the major hole in his game, as opposing quarterbacks completed 4 out of every 5 passes targeting him, even if he did generally limit the damage with the aforementioned quality tackling. As a young, three down linebacker, though, his value is evident. Tackles may be an overrated stat, but if you’re making them and not missing many, you’re likely preventing quite a bit of damage."

And here's the link to the article in bold

https://www.thefalcoholic.com/2020/...g-free-agent-lb-devondre-campbell-deion-jones

Falcons fans thing he's super vs the run, good blitzer, solid tackler, rarely misses. Weak in coverage.

And frankly I don't really mind. We have Simmons and Murphy to cover inside depending on the package and his coverage is good enough to pick up leaking RB's or TE's.

I want my inside backers to be good vs the run and good at blitzing first and foremost.

Campbell has an odd story. The Falcons chose him for his length & speed. The intent was to have him cover TEs. In 2016 & 17 he did fine. 2018 was a little rocky and the change of defensive lead coaches in 2019 impacted his play significantly in a negative way. I’m certain Simmons is a better cover guy but I wouldn’t totally dismiss Campbell.
