I know it's only been one preseason game, but I fear that KVB may never come back from his injury and have a quantifiable impact as a defensive end.

Because he was on the far side of the field from where I was sitting during the game, I didn't get a good look at him until the broadcast last night. I paid special attention to him because I didn't remember hearing his name called at all during the game. What I saw was Ryan Young (if he played, I didn't catch the starting tackle for Dallas) riding him eight yards back from the line of scrimmage on successive downs, and the Dallas offense attacking his side of the D. The Cowboys best run of the first quarter was to the giant hole where he had been.

This, combined with the notes that KVB had been getting handled by OT Reggie Wells, makes me worry about whether, even in his "bulked up" form now, he'll be able to have an impact equal to his draft status.

Yeah, I know. It was also Ryan Young, who is an above-average, almost-Pro Bowl-caliber offensive tackle, but we face a lot of good tackles in division. I'm not pressing the "panic" button, but it was just a note that I had after watching the game last night and looking at him in particular.

Once again people looking for the cloud in the silver lining. Since we have two rookies at end who need reps, Pace and King, how many snaps did KVB play? He started on the right side, a switch from the past. Due to the success of the defensive line, was KVB double teamed? If Pace were on the right and KVB on the left would the results be switched with KVB getting two sacks and Pace not getting any?

OOPS! I did not preview my post. Got the left and right end switched around. KVB was on the left for this game instead of his usual right side.

I belive that KVB played a full quarter, and did not leave in the nickel package. To the best of my remembrance, Pace didn't get his sacks until the second and fourth quarters, against second- and third-string players.

KVB was very much not double-teamed. He was well handled by Ryan Young on the downs that I noted, and was a non-factor. I did note that W. Bryant was double-teamed at least a couple times during the game, and managed to push the pocket back and get some penetration, for comparison.

I'm just taking this note (if you look at my other posts on the game, they're overwhelmingly positive) because no one had said anything about his performance after the game Saturday, and so I wanted to pay attention to it when I watched the broadcast, especially considering the conflicting reports coming out of training camp ("best shape of his career"/"ready to break out" versus "getting well handled by 7th round pick Reggie Wells"). These were my notes. If you noted that he was having any sort of impact besides piling on or getting to plays once the tackle was made (which is what I noted), feel free to add what you saw of his outing.

Point taken - I think if KVB's play throughout the rest of the pre-season doesn't raise any eyebrows, then perhaps we have a good reason to be concerned.

Once the season starts he will be fine.

Um... I guess that's comforting. Do you think he's goldbricking it during the preseason?

Its too early to based anything since it's only preseason. Let's start assesing his production when the season starts.

Actually, Pace was in on the Nickel package against Dallas first team. I am not sure if KVB came out but either he or Wakefield did on 3rd downs.

Pace did play against Adams and Javiar Collins (1st/2nd string) but I dont know who the 3rd string tackle is.

Right, but I believe that Pace got one sack in the second or third quarter (against Collins) and one in the fourth (because I remember someone saying that Summerall was hating on the Cards for playing 1st stringers in the 4th quarter. I remember seeing Pace handled pretty easily by Flozell Adams in the first quarter, but displaying good effort and pursuit nonetheless.

KVB was still in there at DE on passing downs. Pace took Wakefield's place. I didn't note whether Wakefield or Bell was playing next to Wendell, but I believe that they kind of traded off. I do know that Wakefield did take snaps at DT during the game, I just don't remember when.

Again, I'm not hitting the "panic" button right now, just noting that he was a non-factor Saturday night, and seeing if anyone else who was at the game or watching KVB on TV noted anything different.

AZDad:

Some players win jobs or get cut based on their performance in preseason. We're not talking minicamp here, and we're talking about a guy who's not only expected to start but be an impact player on defense. I don't think it's unreasonable to be concerned by VandenBosch getting handled one-on-one by an opponent's first stringer. Not panicked, just concerned.
