Surgery would sideline him 4-6 weeks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Raleigh Roundtree may have to undergo surgery to remove an enlarged spleen, an operation that would sideline him for four to six weeks.

The Cardinals made that announcement Saturday after tests by team physician Wayne Kuhl showed that Roundtree had "significant enlargement" of the spleen as well as anemia.

The spleen problem first was noticed during a routine pre-training camp physical exam Friday.

More tests are planned for Monday, and if they confirm the preliminary findings, surgery will be performed.

Roundtree, entering his seventh NFL season, played five years with San Diego before he was signed by Arizona as a free agent last year. He played in 10 games at guard and tackle last season as injuries depleted the Cardinals' offensive line, starting six of them.

That would suck! Hes a key to our o-line depth. Sitting around in bed healing isnt going to help him get ready for the season none. But the #1 priority is his health so I wish him a speedy recovery!

I wouldn't worry too much about that. He is a vet and doesn't really need to learn our system because he was here last year. If he was a rook or a second year player it would be different. But he has experiance, as long as he is ready by the start of the season all will be fine.

What I worry about is a 300 pound guy being layed up in bed for about 6 weeks cant be to good for the stamina or physique!!

If it's 4-6 weeks like predicted, it's all good. He's a backup, so we probably won't need him at the start of the season anyway.

You act as if the offense is the same as last year and I don't believe that is correct. It could be vastly different with regards to terminology and even plays. Now I could be wrong but I don't recall Sullivan ever saying he was going to use the same offesne as last year.

I just hope this isn't some sort of "injury" omen for the upcoming season. He was especially important away from depth because he was likely in the mix to start at G if Kendall moved to C so this could end up being a bigger blow to the O if he was indeed the top guy heading into camp.

What?
What does a spleen do anyway? I'm a medical pansy. If someone pukes anywhere near me I do too automatically so I never had much interest in that stuff.

The spleen helps the immune system somehow, but it is an organ that you can easily live without it.

Ah nuts! Can we ever get to opening day with our O-line intact? Hope he recovers quick!

Krang's explanation about the spleen is generally correct. Peter Forsberg, of the Colorado Avalanche, had his spleen removed during the playoffs a couple of years ago. IIRC, he wanted to return for the last game, or so, and he did. )Or, maybe he didn't. :) )So, it is quite possible that Roundtree returns to action this season.

Are you saying we scratched every O-line play from last year out and installed all new ones? I seriously doubt that. Possibly a few new plays here and there. Assuming we did put in some different line plays, wouldn't you agree that it would be easier for a savy vet to pick them up faster than a green rookie? Thats all I was saying. I don't see what there is to freak out about. He's a backup and he is a vet who can pick new plays up much faster than a rookie who's head is spinning. Also, no way he starts over Dishman at G. He'll be our #1 backup at G if Kendall moves to C.

I hope to God we are not using Olsen's playbook. I would think new Offensive Coordinator equals new playbook.

I wish Roundtree a speedy recovery. The Cards should still be in decent shape at OG with Dishman,Spikes,Whiting,Wragge, and Grace and Garcia plus Big Davis.

That is what I am saying. I am assuming a new playbook all together with the new OC. The big question still remains is it all nwe terminology to be learned or is it the same as last year and all that changes is the way the plays are called.

MD, I am not freaking out but merely pointing out that just because Sullivan was here last year doesn't mean a smooth transition to HIS offense. Alos, remember there is a new Oline coach. And I would argue that Roundtree could easily have been preferred by the coaches over Dishman. I don't know. What I was suggesting was, I hoped he wasn't #1 going into camp is all.

My cousin is a doctor (of something) who lives in Flagstaff....I was up there and she brought this up to me having read it in the paper. She said this is a sign of something more severe (the enlargening of the spleen) I hope a speedy and healthy recovery for Roundtree, he was so solid last year, I hope he can come back.

This doesn't sound good. Can your Doctor cousin help us out here with some more info?
