Ratatouille

Release Date: June 29, 2007
Studio: Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar Animation Studios
Director: Brad Bird (director), Jan Pinkava (co-director)
Screenwriter: Emily Cook, Kathy Greenberg, Jan Pinkava
Genre: Animation
MPAA Rating: Not Available
Website: Ratatouille

Starring: Patton Oswalt, Brian Dennehy, Brad Garrett, Janeane Garofalo, Ian Holm, John Ratzenberger

Plot Summary: After taking audiences on incredible journeys to the worlds of cars, superheroes, fish and toys, only the amazing storytellers at Pixar Animation Studios ("Cars," "Finding Nemo," "The Incredibles") could create an entirely new and original world where the unthinkable combination of 5-star restaurants and rats come together for the ultimate fish-out-of-water tale.

In the new animated-adventure, "Ratatouille," a rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great French chef despite his family's wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unlikely - and certainly unwanted - visitor in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, Remy's passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down.

Remy finds himself torn between his calling and passion in life or returning forever to his previous existence as a rat. He learns the truth about friendship, family and having no choice but to be who he really is, a rat who wants to be a chef. Directed by Academy Award®-winning Brad Bird ("The Incredibles") and co-directed by Academy Award®-winning Jan Pinkava ("Geri's Game"), "Ratatouille" is slated for release on June 29, 2007.

Went and saw this yesterday morning.

It was pretty damned enjoyable overall and pretty funny. However it did drag out in parts and was definitely longer than it should have been. My 3 year old lost interest about 80 minutes into it.

I would rate it as good but toward the bottom of the Pixar productions above A Bugs Life and just below Cars.

Let me start off by saying this is the best PIXAR film to date...for adults. If I was rating this movie purely from an adult perspective, this is the best one to date. From a kids perspective, it's probably not the best of the bunch but not bad either. Let me explain.

I categorize todays 3D animation movies into 2 categories. There are ones that I consider more for kids (like the typical PIXAR) and ones that are geared more towards teens, young adults and adults a la Shrek.

Typically the regular PIXAR film is very kid friendly with just enough adult humor to keep the adults interested. On the Shrek front, most of the jokes are way over a kids heads but has enough of what I call high jinks to keep the kids interested. That's how I classify this movie.

My kids really liked the movie but they didn't react like they did with Toy Story or Finding Nemo. I still strongly recommend this movie for kids but I even more strongly recommend this movie if your an adult and a fan of 3D animation movies.

My mom and brother are going to see it tomorrow. I guess I could tag along and check it out.

Sorry bro but even for adult entertainment this movie is nowhere near the leveol of Toy Story 1 or 2, or Finding Nemo. Those are pure classic. This one just isnt. It was good but not near the level of those films.

:stupid:

The movie was good, but not in the same league as TS or Nemo.

And it was rather long.

That was much better than I expected. I liked it more than any of the other movies mentioned here. I really enjoyed this one. I love Oswalt's character on King of Queens so it was pretty funny having him as the voice of Remy. And I can't hate a movie about food...well besides Fast Food Nation.

I didn't think Toy Story 1 or 2 or finding Nemo was geared towards adults like this one. Like I stated in my review this movie was not suppose to be the next Toy Story or Finding Nemo. Those films in terms of the audience they were geared for (more kids) have no equal I agree. I just don't place them in the same spectrum.

I agree. This is the first Pixar film where it felt more like a movie and less like a 3D animated cartoon.

I liked the movie a lot. Not as good as the Pixar "classics" (Incredibles, Toy Story 2 and Nemo), but definitely on par or better than movies like A Bug's Life or Cars.

pretty much agree with this - not in the classic realm, but that's rarified air for any movie, but it was very good and better than Cars/BL.

What's funny, is that the more I think about it, the more I really enjoyed it. Not to say it's a better movie, but I think I enjoyed it more than I enjoyed Nemo. Just a beautiful movie, and one of many great movies to have come out in the past few weeks--very surprising considering the dreck that was out between 300 and Die Hard.

really? I liked it A LOT and I really loved the third act, but I don't think it compares to Nemo. I can't remember one slow moment in that entire film and the fact that it actually not only made Ellen tolerable, but lovable is proof positive that Nemo was pretty much flawless IMO. Both stories spoke to me as well though as I could relate to Remy, not being one of the pack and going out on my own against my family's wishes to try to do something unthinkable, but it didn't hit me nearly as hard as the way the father-son relationship spoke to me in Nemo. And above that, visually Nemo was just stunning. The under-water world that they brought to life was breathtaking.

I hope you're not taking what I said as saying Nemo sucked. That's not it at all. As far as enjoyment factor is concerned, I think I enjoyed Ratatouille just a little bit more--not much, but a little bit.

didn't think you meant that at all - just saying why Nemo was better IMO.

Nemo was som much better than Ratatouille its not even funny. Toy Story was a far better movie as well.

This movie just dragged about the 80 minute mark on. I liked it. But it is not in the same hemisphere as the two movies I just stated.

No I didnt because its a fact that I think that. ;)
You just reminded me of an argument I got into with one of my teachers when I was a kid. We were learning about fact vs. opinion. She'd make a statement, and we had to say if it was fact or opinion.

She said, "Susie's favorite flavors of ice cream are chocolate & vanilla". I said it was fact. She argued it was opinion, because not everyone's favorite is chocolate & vanilla. I said she didn't say that chocolate & vanilla were the BEST flavors, just that they were Susie's favorite. She wouldn't back down, and obviously, to this day, I still say she was wrong ;)

She eventually "won" because she said there's no way that Susie had tried EVERY flavor of ice cream in the world, so until then, it would only be her opinion that those were her favorite. I think she was pissed that she was losing an argument to a 9 year old.

She was wrong. That is a fact that those are her favorites. If she tried a new one and liked it better, then that would be her new favorite. I think you teacher was confusing fact and absolute truth. But stating what her favorite flavors are is fact...susie stating her favorites are the best is opinion. Good job standing up to her.

My wife was telling me yesterday about when she moved from Phoenix to southern AZ school, and they were doing things a year behind (it's true...I did times tables in the 4th grade, she did the third) and the teacher was talking about diagramming sentences, something she had already done the prior year. She was bored, and the teacher calls her out and she explains that she already did the stuff. So the teacher asks her, since she's such a pro at diagramming, to come up and "teach the class" and put a complex sentence up...my wife breezes through it and the teacher tells her...oh, well, uhm...why don't you just pick out a book to read then. She had to take a lot of classes at higher levels after that because she'd already covered a lot of it...I think it is why she ended up taking college classes in high school and then finished college in three years (with a double major).

:D

She is...she was HS valedictorian and all...buuuut she never would have gone through college that fast if she hadn't been taking higher level courses from like 6th grade on...her junior year, she had done all the stuff required so started doing college classes. She went to NAU with like 28 credits or something, and math & english out of the way.

Anyway, we haven't seen this but my daughter called it Ratatootie. I love pixar films, so I'll end up seeing it soon I'm sure.

She didn't win anything. She can't prove that Susie hasn't tried every flavor. Furthermore, I will declare you the winner as I am sure that she never asked that question again.
