I think he would have a better chance at an NBA career if he came to the UofA. That's the Wildcat in me talking.:)

It definitely is, that may have been true 30 years ago, but today it doesn't really matter what size school you go to if you're great. Lets look at the 2009 draft for instance were 1/3 of the players taken in the 1st round were from either non Power Conference schools or over seas. Specifically 4 guys were from Mid Major conferences. In 2008 it was 6 from Mid Majors, 3 in 2007 and 5 in '06 (anything before that gets weird b/c players were coming out of HS so its not directly comparable).

The NBA is too much of a money machine for scouts not to look at schools like Detroit if they've got a stud.

The reason people go to big schools other than the coaching and facilities being better is because they're on TV more and have better chances of going deeper in the NCAA Tournament. That earns a stud NBA prospect more of a national brand even as an amateur and helps immensely when negotiating larger endorsements prior to his rookie season.

Going to UDM is a family move for Ray, not a professional one. But when he ends up there I can't blame him for going that route.

Understand that's just a rumor, the day before Josh Smith was telling people that Ray told him he's going to UCLA. I still think he winds up at Detroit but the rumor from Stovall is just that a rumor, he didn't even cite a source for it.

Every year at the McD's game we have these rumors about one player recruiting others or sources say this and more often than not the rumors aren't true. This year the rumors were Smith recruiting McCallum and Terrence Jones to UCLA, you won't find too many UCLA fans expecting that to happen, hoping yes, expecting no.

Virtually everyone thinks McCallum is going to play for his dad, if he doesn't it will be a surprise.

I am going to hi-jack this thread to ask does anything know what the heck happened to Robert Loe? Guy came in for a visit 3 months ago and disappeared from the radar. Also anyone know where Terrence Jones stands in regards to his recruitment, I mean KU, UW, OU and UK where likely destinations but some of the programs are going to lose some talent and OU looks like they with face sanctions for Tiny Gallon.

I don't think OU is going to get sanctions, they may have to forfeit games it looks like both gallon and the soph guard Willie Warren were involved with the same financial advisor so both may be ruled ineligible, but I don't think anybody thinks OU was involved.

Also FWIW I keep reading that people think Jones will commit somewhere and then a few weeks later announce he's going to prepschool. Apparently there are very serious concerns he can't qualify. He may be one of those guys who goes down to the wire, it's why no UCLA fans believe they have any chance at getting him now.

One would think so, but for every person like us there's a few that ends up at ASU a few miles from their parents.

I guess if you're parents can't help themselves and feel the constant need to visit that would be an annoyance. I don't think my parents dropped by once after they moved me in, and I liked being close enough for a home cooked meal once a month or so, but that's just me.

Living in Tempe, UA was the perfect distance.

Close enough to get my laundry done and come see friends, but far enough where I didn't have to worry about anyone dropping by. That goes for parents and ex girlfriends ;)

Sure, when you bump the Ali Farokhmanesh thread.

It was pretty obvious that McCallum was staying in Detroit for months. No need for a bump.

Yep and Ziegler too. I think virtually everyone recruiting both of them knew if the fathers didn't get fired, they weren't going to get the son, both retained their jobs and both got the son.

UCLA sure could have used Ray but I never expected to get him.

It's a preference thing, just commenting on Renz's thought that people wanted to get away from their parents when choosing a college.

Did Ali do something recently? :?

This thread was started less than 3 weeks ago. Again :?
Just thought it was interesting that your first foray back to the sports boards after the Northern Iowa thing was commenting on Arizona's recruiting failures.

Once again I am going to hi-jack this thread to let you all in on what I am gathering from GOAZCATS, WILDABOUTAZCATS, & Scout.com. To answer my own question about Robert Loe, I guess he commited to St. Louis last month.

Now from what I read today from Javier Morales on WILDABOUTAZACTS is that UA has a new recruiting target and it ain't one we know about. Turns out it is another post player who is transferring. The guy is Eloy Vargas out of FLA. Four star PF in the 2008 class who signed with FLA but couldn't hack it there. Word is that his grades were out of whack and Billy the Kid dogged him for his lack of effort in practice. Any way he spent last year at a Miami Dade CC where he averaged 24/14 while trying to get his grades up. He along with Jack would give UA some serious size and depth in the frontcourt. Only thing is Eloy is being recruited by somewhere around 50 schools according to his CC coach. Sounds like another Jarrid Famous (Vargas is 6-10 220), hopefully we can land a motivated and rejuvenated Eloy who still has 2 years of eligibility remaining.

I think a lot of coaches might regret not discovering Loe earlier, he shows some real promise although he's not really a post guy despite his size.

Guess I haven't really thought about my posting history, but it seems you are keeping on top of it.
