NEW YORK - The FBI is investigating allegations that a veteran NBA referee bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated.

According to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered.

The law enforcement official, who spoke to the AP on Friday on condition of anonymity, said the referee was aware of the investigation and had made arrangements to surrender as early as next week to face charges. The official, who did not identify the referee, is familiar with the investigation but was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

The law enforcement official said the bets involved thousands of dollars and were made on games during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons.

The NBA issued a brief statement Friday: "We have been asked by the FBI, with whom we are working closely, not to comment on this matter at this time."

The FBI probe, which began recently, also involves allegations that the referee had connections to organized crime associates. Other arrests are expected, the official said.

The referee had a gambling problem, according to the official, and was approached by low-level mob associates through an acquaintance.

The investigation first was reported Friday by the New York Post.

Veteran oddsmaker John Avello, at the Wynn resort on the Las Vegas Strip, said that without specific information it would be difficult to identify wagering irregularities over the last two seasons.

"At this point, it's too early to know if any games were affected," Avello said, adding that no regulators or investigators had contacted him about the case.

Gambling long has been a problem in sports, and leagues have made a point of educating players of the potential pitfalls. The NBA, for example, discusses gambling at rookie orientation, even bringing in former mobster Michael Franceze to speak.

I friggin knew it. Tim Donagy.

I could have sworn he was throwing games or altering his calls. I watched a few of his called games in utter shock. Especially, the Suns/NY game (triple ot in NY) a couple years back. It was just bizarre.

What does Tim Donaghy (sp?) look like? Is he the guy I was thinking of?

Wow that was the game when Amare was called on those ridiculous calls. One where Duncan dragged him down for the 3rd foul off the ball before halftime.

Was it Donaghy who made those calls?
Can't remember.

Stoudemire draws his second foul of the game after fouling Robert Horry. Stoudemire is escorted to the bench by Steve Nash and the Suns looked baffled. The last thing the Suns need is for Amare to be forced to the bench for the majority of the first half.

Home court advantage at its finest. Ginobili missed an easy layup and complains to an official. The Suns grabbed the rebound as as Phoenix was nearly at half court, the official called a delayed foul on Raja Bell.

D'Antoni doesn't take lightly to the call and storms the hardwood, but his argument doesn't reverse the call. Horrible call.

Steve Nash is hurt after Bowen knees the two-time MVP in the groin. What a dirty, dirty play by Bowen. Of course, the play looked unintentional, but Bowen clearly stuck his knee directly in Nash's upper thigh.

Officiating looks to be getting out of hand after Amare Stoudemire picks up his fourth foul of the game - an offensive foul. Stoudemire hardly touched Oberto, who flopped to the floor and now Stat finds himself in dangerous waters.

Nash picks up a foul after trying to draw an offensive foul on Duncan. It was a close call and I would say that Nash was there before Duncan left his feet. Nash's feet were planted and he was outside the circle, but hey, that's the benefits of home-court.

A technical foul is called against Dan D'Antoni after arguing a call on behalf of Steve Nash. Nash was clearly fouled after nearly three Spurs collapsed on top of him to force a turnover.

Steve Nash argues another call after a Robert Horry steal, which he should argue. Horry clearly fouled him.

Bruce Bowen picks up a team foul and D'Antoni screams out, "Why call it now?" It's true. The officiating has been pretty one-sided for the majority of the game. Steve Nash continues to get slapped when he crosses half court and Amare Stoudemire can't seem to draw a foul for the life of him, despite replays that clearly show Tim Duncan making contact with his left hand.

Bowen seemingly kneed Nash in the groin early in the third quarter, but didn't receive a foul despite Suns coach Mike D'Antoni's incessant rant.

I think NBA referees get into more trouble than the players. Look how many got busted for the 1st class ticket scandal

Who's that poster who always blamed the refs? Now I feel bad for always telling him to shut up.

The NBA really didn't need to add to my growing list of reasons why I'll never give them another dime.

I guess he already has resigned. I wonder if the mob will take him out? I wouldn't be walking around public too much if I were him right now.

Also, is he the only one?

Referee Betting Scandal Should Be Used To End Subjectivity

The FBI investigation of a referee who is accuses of gambling on games he has been covering is a huge story.

The League office has been in such self righteous denial about problems with the refs for so long, this is going to be huge. With all of their reviews of refs and grading, the fact that calls remain so terribly subjective is a terric opportunity for refs to cheat.

The sad part is that Commissioner Stern et al are likely to focus on "off court" policing rather than the underlying problem which is the excessive subjectivity in the way games are called. If they don't address it, the NBA will suffer irreversable harm.

My suggestions include:

1. CONSISTENCY: Set standards for what is a foul and what isn't independent of who it made by, who it is against, where the game is being played, and whether it is during the regular season or the playoffs. Fine officials who deviate from these standards.

2. CHANGE THE RULES TO DEFINE THE DEGREE OF CONTACT: One guy gets mugged without a call while a "ticky tack" call gets called at the other end. One of the reasons flopping is such a big deal is that it is a way players can draw foul calls on incidental contact.

3 BE PREPARED TO KEEP CALLING FOULS: Almost every basketball brawl has been due to players getting upset when they are clearly being fouled and it is not being called. As games get intense, it seems like the refs stop trying to control the physical contact. This is not only causing the on court problems but also give the refs a huge opportunity to cheat.

4. CONSIDER ADDING A FOURTH OFFICIAL: The pace of the game is such that officials are constantly out of position and making calls from 40 feet away or more. A fourth official would reduce the number of "blind spots" and thus the excuses for missing calls.

There is no way that anybody is going to be completely happy with the way games are called, but they will accept the calls more easily if the excessive subjectivity is reduced. The fact that the league did not catch this says a lot.

Suns/Knicks in 05-06.....and this was the FIRST game that came to mind even before they announced it was Donaghy. and he happened to be reffing this game. 41 fouls called against the suns....Diaw/KT/Bell/Burke all fouled out while Marion/Nash/JR ended with 5 each

This is a huge story. When its clear that stuff like this has gone on, most people believe that 90% of it goes on without anyone being caught.

It casts doubt on the NBA for years to come. David Stern might not survive this.

There is only one way to solve this. Create an evaluation system for referees that is open to public scrutiny. Individual accuracy records should be open to the public...including information on individual games and specific calls.
David Stern is #1 on my ****list since he upheld the suspensions that gave the Suns vs Spurs series to the Spurs. It wouldn't surprise me to discover he is in this up to his neck.

The worst is that David Stern apparently knew of these investigations since 2 years and he still let him ref playoff games.
