Very sad news. Seems Cotton has been around forever and it's hard to believe he is gone now. Very good coach, good man and an entertaining color man with Al McCoy. He will be missed.

He should be immediately enshrined in the Hall of Fame and, locally, should be in the Ring of Honor at AWA.

Rest in peace Cotton!

Cotton was truly inspirational. Words cannot express the tremendous loss of his passing is to the Phoenix Suns fans and the Suns organization.

Cotton you will be remembered for the good you did in your life and in the lives of others.

As expressed by Espo:

He should be the next ring of honor inductee.

Cotton wasn't just an exceptional coach, GM, and basketball thinker, he was a genuinely good man. Most people remember him for his humor, but not everyone knows it was bourne our of his greater desire to draw people in and make them feel comfortable. He was constantly trying to make people laugh and make friends.

The few good people in the game instantly recognized Cotton as one of their own. The coach had developed something of a father/son relationship with the All-Star Good Guy, Kevin Johnson, and the rest of the team recognized it as unusual. All the players from the 1990 team went over to Cotton's house for dinner. Tom Chambers turned to JoAnn and asked, "Where's KJ's room?" Kevin was as withdrawn as Cotton was a social butterfly, but they were essentially the same gentle person at heart.

I will dearly miss Cotton. If only there were more sincere people like him in sports. If only there were more sincere people like him in life.

Great post Gaddabout.

It's so sad, because he was always smiling and upbeat, cracking jokes. I heard he got sick and it was so unexpected because he seemed so healthy during his broadcasts.

I'm too young to remember his 1st stint, but his teams of the early 90s were really fun to watch - KJ, Chambers, Hornacek, Majerle putting up 120 pts a game. Really put the suns back on the map.

RIP Cotton - you will be missed. :(

Sad, sad news. I shed a tear for Cotton and his family today. Arizona lost another great soul today.

This is indeed a sad day! Cotton was the first to line up for charity events, He gave alot to the community, He loved the community as much as he loved the Suns. He will be missed big time. RIP!

Great guy, great sense of humor. Glad I was able to meet him years ago (at Los Arcos Mall). He and his wife both seemed very genuine.

RIP.

RIP Cotton, the only "true Sun".
Although Dick VanArsdale has the title of "Original Sun" -- the first player chosen in the Suns expansion draft, from the Knicks -- and has been with the organization ever since . . .

Cotton has been here-and-gone-and-here-and-gone-and-here. As Coach, as Announcer, as Executive.

But the twinkle in his eye, and the breath of fresh air he brought to the team, has been unique with the Suns.

He should indeed be included in the Ring of Honor. I wish it had happened when he was first diagnosed with lung cancer.

I hope it happens during our first home game later this year.

At the old Coliseum, they wouldn't let you in the main entrances until an hour before the game or something, but if you went down below, you could get in a lot earlier. One night, my dad and I were walking around watching the guys warm up. I asked why the baskets were so far out from the baseline. Cotton happened to be walking by at the time and my dad told me to ask him. Cotton put his arm around me and explained everything for a few minutes. It was one of those experiences that stays with you forever. He was truly a classy guy and will certainly be missed.
