RIP: Cory Monteith (1982-2013)

'Glee' Star Cory Monteith Dies at 31

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/glee-star-cory-monteith-dies-584965

Glee star Cory Monteith was found dead at Vancouver's Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel Saturday, The Hollywood Reporter has comfirmed. He was 31.

The actor was found at noon today on the hotel's 21st floor, Vancouver police said in a news conference. He checked into the hotel on July 6, and was expected to check out today. When Monteith missed his checkout time at noon, hotel staff went to his room and found him.

Police said Monteith was with other people last night, but an examination of hotel video footage showed him returning to his room alone early Saturday. Police to believe he was alone when he died. No cause of death was given and no foul play is suspected, police said.

Damn shame. Died of an toxicity of heroine and alcohol. This might kill Glee. The show was basically about Fin and Rachael. They are going to have to write in his death and re-write or re-plan all that was probably planned out.

Very sad. R.I.P.

I've never understood the allure of the real killer drugs like heroin. I mean, seriously, has anyone ever watched a movie like Trainspotting and thought, gee, there's a lifestyle I could really get behind?

I have a cousin who lost a daughter to a heroin O.D. this year. She was 20. I was stunned when I heard it was heroin. I had no idea middle-class 20-somethings in suburbia were doing heroin.

I know it happens but I'm at a loss to understand the appeal. I can understand the interest in marijuana, cocaine, your mother's pills and the like but drugs such as heroin befuddle me. I'm very far removed from this world but I wonder how much the popularity of Oxycodone has led to the current popularity of heroin.

i dont think heroin ever lost popularity, just depends on your region.

The feeling while on the drug is more of what allures returning guests, not what the future would behold.

Depression is a big part of it too.

I've been googling and reading articles on this subject for the last hour. From what I've come across, it is very much on the rise especially among young white people (suburban youth). Apparently a lot of them start using prescription pain killers (Oxy mostly) and then find out Heroin is much cheaper and probably more available too. I had guessed the allure was that oxy is kind of like taking baby heroin but cost actually plays an even greater role. It never dawned on me that Heroin would actually be cheaper and by quite a bit.

for sure depending on market. Pills are very cheap when perscribed, when illegal they cost a ton. Street drugs are very cheap in comparison usually.

Again though on the regional thing - I grew up in central phoenix and through my teenage years I ran across pretty much anything and everything you can think of. One thing ive never even seen in person is heroin but its just not that available here. Talking with it from my wife in new york, her story is similar but they had never seen meth and saw heroin and heroin addicts all the time

its definately a suburban white drug. Heroin and cocaine.

Weird situation here in Chicago: whitey teens waiting in line for heroin on street corners in the hood.

Had a black lady friend tell me about it. She said she stopped bothering to call the police.

I know quite a few who used to do the H in phoenix.

My cousin lives in a Chicago suburb. Sadder then heck to think her daughter could have been one of those.

Yep, and the methadone they give out to get people off the stuff (if they still do) is worse that the heroin. From what I hear from someone who one of the first to take the methadone.

In what way? Methadone has been used to treat opiate addictions since the 60's and it was my understanding it was one of the more effective ways to treat this addiction. Not that any way is all that effective. And I've never heard anything positive about the "here's your methadone, try to be good" approach. From what I know about it, Methadone is a bad drug but Heroin is a horrible one.

I think my friend was referring to what the methadone does to you when you try to quit.

Yeah, it isn't pretty but coming off Heroin itself is supposed to be pure hell.

Yep. Methadone just chewed him up worse.

Maybe. I don't know exactly what your friend went through. Despite his addiction, I'm not sure he'd really be able to make that comparison unless he walked himself all the way off of Heroin (without Methadone) AND walked himself all the way off of Methadone. I've heard others make the same comment but in every case they had used methadone to come off heroin and then had to overcome Methadone. But, they had never really experienced the full horrors of overcoming Heroin.

I've known several addicts that cleaned up in clinics using either Methadone or Suboxone, I've yet to meet an ex-heroin addict that cleaned up using other approaches. I know that there are many, I've just never had the chance to meet and talk with them.

Are you saying he was wrong?
I am pretty sure he and a lot of heroin addicts tried to get off heroin without the methadone so he knew what it felt like. Not sure what you are disputing?

Perhaps I misunderstood your point. I thought you were saying that he maintained that coming off Methadone was worse than coming off Heroin? And if that was your point then I would suggest his opinion isn't particularly valid unless he came all the way off heroin without the use of methadone because without it he has no baseline for comparison. I've known several addicts that made similar claims but as we discussed it the air was cleared and they acknowledged that coming off methadone was worse but only because coming off heroin had been eased by the use of methadone. Consider that "trying to get off of heroin" and actually getting off of methadone are not the same thing.

I still am not sure what you are talking about, but ok.

I've been going through a pain attack for the past two weeks and the pain, the exhaustion, the Morphine and the Oxycodone have left me somewhat impaired. I thought I'd explained it clearly so I have no idea how to re-state it and make more sense. I'm not trying to call your friend a liar if that's how this is coming across.

i thought it made perfect sense. Until you have quit cold turkey both ways it would be difficult to say which cold turkey quit was harder to do.

Right?
