Interesting, after Brees signs with the Saints , Philip Rivers comes out and says that it's not a setback at all it's "our chance to do something." Now I'm sure Rivers means it's MY chance to do something, and he's trying to say he's confident he's ready to be the starter, but unfortunately apparently several of his teammates took it as a shot at Brees.

Apparently there's some grumbling that several current players felt Rivers was suggesting it was Brees holding the team back and now that he's gone, it's their chance to do something with Rivers in control. Marty was on record for months as wanting Brees back as the starter, now he's got to support Rivers as the starter, and now apparently several of the players are already annoyed with his comments.

Could be interesting, one of the things scouts loved about Rivers before the draft was his leadership and "moxie", you would hope there's plenty of time for this to be forgotten and him to show his teammates he's ready, but right now it looks like the team isn't fully behind him.

No way this team makes the playoffs in 2006. Yep. You heard me.

Oh yeah, Marty is also the first coach fired. Double word.

Just from that comment not hearing the context of it, his teammates are way over reacting.

Good luck, San Diego. I don't know about this rumor, but you now have a draft-hype project at QB and just let a star walk. Have fun next year. Better buy Tomlinson some tylenol.

yeah I was trying to find the text in its entirety but I haven't yet. They mentioned it on ESPN that buy or sell show with the 4 talking heads talking about it. Earlier I heard on radio a guy talking about how the Raiders are so screwed up they had to settle for Shell and now may have to settle for bringing Collins back. But he then said we're not the only team in disarray, Rivers has already ticked off his teammates by making it seem he's blaming Drew Brees for them not making the playoffs last year.

FYI he has played in 4 NFL games, they've lost all 4, and he's averaging under 5 ypa so far in his admittedly brief career.

I did find this in the SD Trib

Philip has got to earn our trust, to show he can work as hard as Drew,” said one player. “You're drafted fourth overall, yeah, he better throw 20 touchdowns and less than 10 picks. He's not going to have the luxury of making mistakes. He's going to be under the microscope.”

Also some mention in the article that Rivers has really struggled in practice so far with the Chargers and while it was easy to say he's running the scout team against the first team defense, he hasn't done anything yet to convince his teammates he's any good.

but I haven't found the comment that he apparently made that annoyed people.

My guess is that Bree's shoulder injury may still be hampering him and New Orleans may have gotten damaged goods? Only way I can figure out Marty supporting him and then having him released. They were a force in the AFC and looked to challenge this year. With Rivers at QB...who knows what happens.

The good news for Cards fans is that we play San Diego in San Diego and Brees won't be there!!! Hope its an early season game so we can put the blitz on Rivers!

Ryan Leaf 2.0

They both were drafted high by San Diego and the comparison ends there.

I was a big fan of Rivers from his very first game at NC State and i think in time he'll prove to be a better QB than Brees. Let's not forget that Drew just came on two years ago and was approaching bust status in some peoples eyes.

Hell, as a college player Brees couldn't carry Rivers' Jock. I hope that one day I'll be able to say the same about his Pro carreer.

I'm sure its one of those situations where nerves were still raw from Brees leaving and Rivers's teammates probably weren't in the mood to hear how great he thinks he is going to be.

It probably would have been a good idea for Rivers to praise Brees or just say nothing until the shock of Brees's leaving wore off.

Chandler AZ.
Didn't he have a few starts and lose them all? If I'm correct, he really shouldn't be talking much yet.
On the Breez thing, was management just pissed he had the surgery they didn't think was necessary?

The shoulder injury shouldn't be a major threat to his career, many other quarterbacks have comeback from them and had sucessful careers.

There has been murmerings of front office intrigue in San Deigo, with reported tensions between GM A.J. Smith and Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer, so perhaps while one man gives his endorsement another says to Brees "good bye". Just a thought, no evidence to support it.

I think that this is just one of those incidents where Rivers accidently touched a nerve on some butt hurt teammates, and everyone is making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Giver Rivers some time. IMO, he will be a much better player than Brees, as he has a better arm, he's bigger, and has ten times the leadership skills. Rivers wasn't a very good practice player at NC State either, but he was always great in games.

The comparison to Leaf is absolutely ridiculous and unfounded. Their personalities are completely different from what I've seen. Leaf was arrogant, while Rivers is confident.

Rivers has never started a game, per NFL.com. He has played in exactly 2 games, with mixed results. One game he did well, the other not so well.

I'm trying to think of the closest mindset-to-talent-ratio QB that's actively playing right now...
I'm going to say J.P. Losman. Arrogant seems about right. Losman has also been struggling, to put it kindly. I sat through 3 Bills games last year and they were dreadful.
