I saw on G4 that Led Zep is not letting them use their songs. If they did, I might get permission to get this.

Didnt see this on here;

Rock Band 2 to have all of Rock Band 1's tracks as free download?

According to IGN, Rock Band 2 will come with all the original game's tracks available as a free download. This is what IGN 360 editor Nate Ahern says: "Immediately upon purchasing Rock Band 2 you'll have the ability to download a huge library of songs, as well as all of the songs off of the original disc as a free download." That can't be right though, can it?

You can look at this in two ways. First off, all those who bought the original Rock Band are probably going to be a bit miffed if they can't access their library of disc and download songs once they have the new game. Okay, it wouldn't be a huge pain to just insert the disc and play the old game, but presumably RB2 is going to bring in some gameplay elements that would enhance the play of songs. Fair enough. The majority of original Rock Band players are going to fall into this category too and will be the ones most likely to get the sequel.

But then look at the PS3 version situation over here. *Brief check of Play.com* Nope still not out here. In fact by the time EA bothers to release the PS3 version, RB2 will basically be out in the US. If it does contain all the original tracks for free (and improved gameplay) why even bother with the original game? Even the instruments are sold separately here. A brief import later and Bob's your Uncle - two games for the price of one. Sweet!

Generous and sensible and accessible and heart-warming though the idea is, it doesn't make a huge amount of business sense. At this stage though, approximately three decades after the game got its release across the pond, I'm inclined to think EA, MTV and Harmonix deserve everything they get as the result of such a decision.

Perhaps then they will choose to treat us different, which wouldn't be a big surprise really. That kind of idea won't inspire customer loyalty or good will though. I'm going to have a guess and say that EA will probably enforce some kind of verification system for RB2 to ensure you have bought the original game disc. Presumably this will be clarified at E3.

Nope. They don't want anyone touching their master tracks, which is what RB wants for all of its songs.

If its true, that is one heck of a trump card. I'm not believing it though, the music industry isn't exactly known for saying "well sure you can give away our stuff however you'd like."

Yeah, I'm glad RB demands master tracks. One of the many reasons RB >>> GH
Thankfully, all of the GHWT songs will be master tracks as well.

I don't think it's that far fetched. The majority of your sales base purchased Rock Band 1 and have already purchased much of the music already. I also bet that this was also negotiated before hand when signing bands/labels etc for the first game. Harmonix has had a road map about their games for some time. Knowing they wanted to be backwards compatible isn't something they thought of at the last minute.

Plus some of these older bands are not doing jack right now. So getting some exposure on their old stuff and getting people to buy their music again is a plus. So giving Harmonix rights to port over music to new versions is probably not a hard sell. I seriously doubt future compatibility is hindered by the music industry as much as the developers hoping to make more profit by getting people to repurchase content.

Perhaps, but the music business is still one of the most control freakish groups out there when it comes to intellectual property. Time will tell, but I just won't be holding my breath on Rock Band releasing all of their old content for free. Even if (and that is still a big if) they wanted to.

Time will tell, but I just won't be holding my breath on Rock Band releasing all of their old content for free. Even if (and that is still a big if) they wanted to.

I don't think it's going to be free for those that have not already purchased the content via Rock Band 1. I don't see that happening and Harmonix makes no such claim in their official press release. However, the official Press Release has some great news for us RB1 people who have already purchase content. Much of what was already stated appears to be official in regards to backwards compatibility with already purchased content and your old instruments.

Official Press Release:

Press Release Follows:
Cambridge, Mass. – June 30, 2008 – Harmonix, the world’s premier music video game company in the world, and MTV Games, a part of Viacom’s MTV Networks (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), along with marketing and distribution partner Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), are taking the groundbreaking music platform that forever changed the face of music video games to the next level this September with the release of Rock Band 2. With the original providing millions of players a new way to interact with the music and artists they love, Rock Band 2 is the next evolution of the franchise that redefined the standard for music games.
Rock Band is the groundbreaking platform that allows music fans and gamers to interact with music like never before - challenging players to put together a band and tour for fame and fortune while learning to master lead/bass guitar, drums and vocals.
Rock Band 2 builds upon its foundation as the first music game to introduce co-operative band gameplay, multiple instruments, a robust online multiplayer experience, an unrivaled offering of downloadable content and raises the bar by delivering an entirely new level of depth, connectivity, authenticity and features including:

  • Backwards compatibility with Rock Band downloadable music content. All previously purchased tracks will immediately load into your Rock Band 2 song list. No need to re-purchase or re-download.
  • The biggest and most diverse soundtrack ever featuring some of rock’s most prolific acts, comprised entirely of master recordings.
  • Major new and dynamic online modes that will connect the entire Rock Band community in more ways than ever before both locally and globally.
  • More variety of instrument choices than ever before with new and improved drum and guitar peripherals, enhanced functionality and innovative new designs - all fully compatible with the original Rock Band instruments.
  • And much more.
“As successful as the original Rock Band continues to be, we’ve now had the benefit of the last eight months to listen to our fans’ requests and to build upon that foundation,” said Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and CEO of Harmonix. “Rock Band 2 is a second-generation band game that will elevate the music game experience to the next level.”
Rock Band 2 will make its debut on Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft this September and have an exclusive launch window in North America. Rock Band 2 will be available for additional platforms later this year.
“We expect Rock Band 2 to continue to drive an amazing social music experience on Xbox 360, said David Hufford, senior director, Xbox Product Management for the Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft. “We look forward to supporting Rock Band 2 on Xbox 360 as gamers continue to download hundreds of new music tracks from Xbox LIVE so they and their friends can perform the rock music they love most.
More details regarding features and music for Rock Band 2 will be revealed at the 2008 E3 Media & Business Summit. Rock Band, the first installment in the franchise, garnered more than 40 awards including Game Critics Award: Best of Show E3 2007.
In addition, Harmonix and MTV Games today announced that The Rock Band online music store recently surpassed 15 million paid downloads since the game’s launch in late November 2007. With more than 200 tracks available to date via download purchase (complete list of tracks at http://www.rockband.com/dlc), the massive Rock Band Music Store allows players to preview and purchase downloadable individual music tracks, packs and albums from the vast selection of offerings available as they build their own custom Rock Band library.
Rock Band 2 is rated “T” for Teen (lyrics, mild suggestive themes) by the ESRB.

More info I found today. RB2 is not only going to make their own instruments but are going to encourage 3rd party development as well. In of the articles posted earlier Harmonix mentioned a new way to bridge the gap between the game instruments and real instruments. Could this be it?

Rock Band Madness: ION Audio Rock Band Drum Kit

This past week or so has been pretty crazy regarding Rock Band gear, both custom and official. Rounding the New Year we saw an official announcement regarding Mad Catz development of 3rd party Rock Band peripherals. At CES we saw SoundTech’s Ediface gadget that allows real guitars to be used in Rock Band. Also at CES, we saw Nyoko showing off a guitar controller that is both compatible with Guitar Hero III and Rock Band. And just today, I noticed EB Games listing an item in their electronic store that instantly had me shaking my head in disbelief: The Rock Band Stage Kit (sorry, no photos).
When does all this Rock Band madness end?
Probably the slickest news coming out of all of this Rock Band insanity is the CES showcasing of a new Rock Band drum kit designed by the professionals over at ION Audio. ION Audio, of course, is famous for its line of professional electronic music equipment (turntables, mixing boards, electronic drums, etc.). The prototype drum kit (shown above) was presented at CES 2008 this past week and is, no doubt, targeting the more extreme Rock Band audience. Right off, one can observe the quality make of the pseudo-instrument. ION’s drum kit authentically appears as if it could absorb even the most extreme poundings from would-be drummers. Considering the seemingly fragile reputation of Harmonix’s stock Rock Band drum kit, ION’s kit could provide a nice, if expensive, alternative for Rock Band owners and fans.
