I don't think it's going to be free for those that have not already purchased the content via Rock Band 1. I don't see that happening and Harmonix makes no such claim in their official press release. However, the official Press Release has some great news for us RB1 people who have already purchase content. Much of what was already stated appears to be official in regards to backwards compatibility with already purchased content and your old instruments.
That press release says that all downloaded content will work with RB2, not that the RB1 on-disc content will work with RB2 like that other link speculates. That's a significant detail.

Not really. The Stock songs probably won't come with RB2 (at least some of them). I bet you still get some. Dan Teasdale (Lead designer) has confirmed with IGN that any DLC purchase on RB2 will work with RB1. How cool is that? I can't think of another reason you would need your DLC from RB2 to play on RB1 unless some of the stock content from RB1 won't make it over.

Does it really matter? DLC is more important and not having to repurchase my DLC is more important. With over 200+ songs available and with 80+ songs on disc, that is huge if it's all new content. That makes spending the $60 even more worth it. Either way it's a win win deal. With the new game I still get new game play, new modes and the opportunity to upgrade my instruments. If they don't include the stock songs from RB1 then I get a huge new set of stock songs.

Also, being able to keep my DLC is more important to me then the stock songs anyway. There are a bunch of stock songs I never would have purchased at all on RB1. Many I can't stand playing. My DLC is suited for my tastes. Now that with the new game you can customize set lists, you DLC becomes even more important.

There is no downside here.

That's a third party kit, not the one that is included with RB2.

I think he knew that. He asked "that's a drum kit for RB?". Not the drum kit. I made the same mistake when I read the post the first time. That is so sweet that we are going to get some 3rd party stuff. Especially from companies that specialized in instrument kits. This should open the door for some really cool stuff.

Also Madcatz annoucned they have some instruments coming out that will work with RB2 and GH as well. I will be interested to find out how that is going to work and if their instruments are any better then the ones that come with the game.

If not, it's still not a big deal if they are going to give me 80 new songs to play with. Either way it's a win win deal. Right, I'm not denying that the new disc + the DLC is a good deal (I'm looking forward to it even though I must say I'm a little disappointed by that leaked list), I was merely expressing my doubts that the RB1 on-disc material will be released for free like that other link says.

Hold on to that thought. That guy that claims to be a tester in another forum said that they were told there could be as many as 300 songs available around launch. Supposedly, that list doesn't include any bands they have signed before the stock list was leaked. That might or might not impact that leaked list. Even if it doesn't there should be much more content for us to chose from this time around.

New Instrument Details

This explains a few things for me. So the new game will have code that recognizes on the new Standard Drum Kit when the cymbals are plugged in. Then it must change the interface in game.

The part that is a tad confusing is that they are using "corresponding" colors with the drum pads which I don't get. So on screen I hope there is a clear difference to tell you for instance which "yellow" things to hit (drum pad or cymbal)? If its just a yellow note and it would be your choice to hit either one I am going to be PO. Because the sound on the screen would not match the item your hitting. The Cymbals in essence would be for show only. That would be hugely disappointing to me.

My guess is that there will be some graphical difference in the notes on screen.

Rock Band 2 getting cymbal-ized

GI reports Harmonix's drum kit will feature crash, ride, and high-hat add-ons; Fender, Ion partnership for LE real-instrument conversions.

By Tom Magrino, GameSpot Posted Jul 11, 2008 11:13 am PT

The term "battle of the bands" has come to epitomize the competitive one-upmanship of Activision's Guitar Hero series and MTV Games' Rock Band franchise. While the first Harmonix-developed rhythm game under the MTV Games label won superior critical approbation thanks to the addition of drums and a karaoke element, the Guitar Hero brand name and a lower price point pushed the Neversoft-made Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock to the top of the billboard sales charts.

This year, the two franchises are again crossing axes with Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2, and the musical arms race is heating up. Earlier this year, Activision hit its first power chord, announcing it would hop on the musical quartet wagon, adding in a five-pad (plus kick pedal) drum kit and a karaoke mic, among other substantially new features.

Today, MTV Games and Harmonix have struck back. As revealed in the latest Game Informer, the new drum kit will have more than just squishy, velocity-sensitive pads. While the standard-issue new drum kit will retain the four-pad setup of its predecessor, drumming enthusiasts will be able to purchase an additional cymbal pack. The pack includes crash, ride, and high-hat add-ons that can be plugged into the new kit and will be associated with existing colors. Because the cymbal pack will plug into expansion slots, Rock Band's original drum set will remain compatible with the game's follow-up.

For those counting, that adds up to a possible eight drum inputs, two more than World Tour and topping even the kit in Konami's Rock Revolution. Konami has taken actions of its own to counter MTV Games and Harmonix's move into the rhythm game space, claiming patent infringement and filing suit against Harmonix in a Texas court this week.

In addition to the new cymbal pack, GI reports that Harmonix and MTV Games have commissioned limited-edition instruments from Fender and Ion that will be made compatible with their rhythm game. From Fender, real Stratocasters will reportedly be stripped and then outfitted with game-input parts. The special edition Ion drum kit will feature four pads, three cymbals, and a kick pedal and will double as a fully functional electronic drum kit. Pricing information for the limited-edition bundles was not revealed.

Rock Band 2 is expected to be released this September on the Xbox 360 and will roll to other, as-yet-unannounced platforms later this year.

Good to see The Who on there. Man, these games are getting so real and the instruments so advanced, your probably going to be able to play the real drums after playing it. Kidding, but man, all these things being added. Cool stuff.

WOW. Rock Band has indeed managed to pull it off. The RB1 songs won't be a free download as reported, but you can somehow rip them onto your hard drive (360 & PS3 only, sorry Wii. Guess I'm gonna need a bigger 360 hard drive) for use in RB2. How much that matters when RB2 is more or less just a functional tweak is up for debate, but that is still really cool. And more importantly (IMO at least), RB2 will have a downloadable pack of 20 songs this fall that they didn't have time to put on this disc, for free. That's called making a statement. Activision is officially under notice.

Oh, and Guns n Roses has a track from Chinese Democracy on it.

Edit: according to the press release, "most" of the RB1 on-disc songs can be exported to RB2, rather than all. It will be interesting to see what that's about.

My guess is that some of the songs on RB1 (that are not masters) will probably not make it over. All the music games seems to be making a big deal about Master only recordings. Personally, as long as the tribute band sounds good I could care less.

Harmonix last year stated that because some of the older bands/artists have masters that are tangled up in a web of ownership some masters just can't be obtained. They also stated that in some instances the Masters no longer exist. That probably encompasses some really good music.

Vegas, baby, yeah!
Per an article I read yesterday, Harmonix is having some licensing issues with 5 songs. That is the reason that they may not make it onto the RB2 download list.

Makes a bit of sense, after Aerosmith went exclusive with GH, the song "The Train Kept a Rollin" may not be available for RB 2 download pending what the agreements between Aerosmith / GH / RB are.

That's ok, that song is week anyway.

For those interested in seeing what the stock drum set will look like and how it will function.

so the symbols look like the same notes as the drums....

They are. I guess so that the old versions work, you will get to use either one to register a hit. However, the sound that comes out of the game will be different. So for instance if you hit the blue drum pad you will hear a drum sound. If you hit the blue symbol you will here a symbol sound.
