Rogers-Cromartie is what the late Joel Bushbaum would call a "Planet Player"

I've been a loyal Pro Football Weekly subscriber for 13 years and I still believe that the late Joel Bushbaum was hands down the best draft evaluator ever. He always had cool terms that he used to describe players. One term he used only on rare occasions was the term "Planet Player". A Planet Player was a guy who had a quality that only a few people on the planet possessed and who also happened to play football.

If Bushbaum was still around, I would guess that Rogers-Cromartie would be the 2008 version of the "Planet Person" because 6' 2" inch cornerbacks with 40 inch verticals and world class speed are very, very rare.

I want Stewart or Mendenhall with the 16th pick, but Cromartie sure is intruiging. Mark Schlereth predicted this morning that Rashard Mendenhall, Jake Long, Chris Long, and Dominique Rogers-Cromartie would be the best players to come out of this draft 5 years from now. From everything we have read, the Cards have their eye on two of those guys (Mendenhall and Cromartie). Lets hope Schlereth knows what he is talking about.

Just want to point out the Bush didnt call a guy a planet player becuase of their measurables. He called guys planet players based on tape review. He didnt like the combine or as he called it the beauty contest.

It is the opposite actually. Bush didnt like late risers and DRC is without a doubt the biggest late riser in the draft. By late riser I mean guys who sky rocket up the boards once the games stop being played. Bush was never persuaded to change his rankings based on the combine numbers.

I thought "planet people" was the concept of late Giants GM George Young (and to lesser degree Bill Parcells) --

i.e.--only so many guys are the combination of great size and athletic ability, usually applied to offensive and defensive linemen

Good on you, Holian. There is nothing wrong with taking a strong stance on a player you believe to be the very best.

I've never seen Rogers-Cromartie so I can't judge him. Of the players I've seen in this year's draft, none would get my Planet Player Designation.

The last guy who was my Planet Player was Philip Rivers. Haven't seen any since him.

Cromartie played against weak competition put up average numbers for a CB and is only moving up because of his measurables. I think TSN has it right when they rate him as a third round type of prospect. Cason is more NFL ready and will be a better CB sooner, DRC may hit his stride once his rookie contract is about to expire.

I could be wrong but as I recall, DRC shot up the boards as a result of his Senior Bowl drills and practices. His combine numbers didn't hurt him either.

His Senior Bowl got a lot of people to pay attention to him as a first round prospect. His combine placed him in the discussion for best CB in the draft.

Much like the late Mr. Bushbaum, I have an aversion to guys who fly late.
I'm very much reminded of Andre Woolfork, who captured my heart about this time of year. He didn't work out well for any team.

Yeah, Peterson was a rare college player and turned in one heck of a season. I'd like to see him continue that (just not against AZ if it ever happens).

That's exactly what did it for me. We traded the #6 pick and declared that it would be OK if we drafted Jeff Faine and Andre Woolfork.

Don't stress. December 14th here in Arizona.

Too bad for me, last time they were up here Matty Leinart made me a believer.

A-Dub had a good day too.

And the Vikings fans treated me like I had a learning disability, not as a rival.

I'm not sure I feel about that last part.

I posted last year that AP was going to be a star and that the Cards would regret not getting him. AP was my sure-fire, lock down, gotta have him pick.

This year it is DRC. He will be a star in this league. Watch him in this link: http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d8073fbe2

The kid is unreal. He has closing speed, incredible change of direction, and catches the ball at the apex. He is fast and fluid. He honestly makes the other corners look rather sluggish and slow.

Mark it down and say Harley told you so: DRC will be the best corner from the 2008 class. The other big 4 won't even amount to squat (Cason, McKelvin, Jenkins, and Talib).

Point blank..... He wont be there when we pick. I am now firmly believing that.

His hips, his speed, his quickness, and the feet of a ballet dancer.

And he has a pedigree in his family.

If he is there.... Jump. My guess is he goes about 3 picks before us.

And he has about the build of a ballet dancer too. 6-2 184? Thats skinny, especially for a NFL player, imagine a guy like that lining up against TO or Q?

He may be able to run or jump with most WRs but he is going to get outmuscled...a lot.
