This movie better deliver. I don't want a Suicide Squad level of disappointment (trailer rocks but movie is meh). Honestly, it makes me nervous whenever you hear of potential studio interference. It very rarely works out in the movie's favor.

Having said that...it looks soooo good.

I must be alone, but I thought it looked awful. Darth Vader isn't enough to trick me into seeing a bad movie, just like the Joker isn't enough to make me see Suicide Squad.

2 reasons it looks bad:

1. Asian samurai jedi. The second I saw the Asian dude I said to myself "please don't make him do martial arts, please don't make him do martial arts, please d.." Aaaaaaand there he is fighting 10 stormtroopers doing martial arts. :nono: Lazy and painfully cliché. No reason to think the rest of the movie wont be equally hacky.

2. Trying to squeeze movies into small gaps is a recipe for disaster.. What I mean is they are trying to create an entire movie out of a time portion of another Star Wars movie. Its the tale of HOW the rebels got the Deathstar schematics for how to destroy it......only problems is nobody was asking "Hey, how did they get those plans on how to destroy the Deathstar???" The movie isn't needed. Its like if they made an entire movie about "The Shawshank Redemption" focusing on HOW Red was able to acquire the rock hammer for Andy. Its like Who cares?

#1 Might be a little cliche but doesn't mean it's bad thing. If the guy does a great acting job and turns about to be a cool character...nobody will care how cliche it is.

#2 Who says nobody is asking? It's something Star Wars fans have pondered ever since the line "Many Bothans died to bring us this information" was spoken. It's also one of the most recognized lines in Star Wars. I have always wondered what those events were and how they actually managed to get the plans. Your comparison to the hammer is a poor one.

The fact this movie is shaping up to be a rag tag of people who are put together to form a squad to get them sounded awesome from day 1 to me.

1. No. Youre trying to justify it "Maybe it might be cool". No its not. Its cliché and frankly racist. Lets have the Asian do karate because that's what they do. Pukingly lazy writing.

2. Star wars movies are not made for star wars people. They are made for the general public to make a billion dollars. And the general public neither cares, nor recognizes that "famous" quote.

3. Hammer analogy was actually perfect, youre just being defensive.

#1...why would I try and justify anything to you? No it's not racist. When they used Jet Lee in Lethal Weapon it was not racist. When they add Jackie Chan to a movie it's not racist. Donnie Yen is a very well known martial artist. Adding a well known martial artist to your film to play a bad-ass is not racist. Having him do what he is known for and does best is not racist.

It would have been racist to show him in Asian garb serving galactic noodles bowing to everyone. Don't be ridiculous. You obviously don't know who Donnie Yen is.

#2 Star Wars fans are made for everyone including die hard fans. Those fans know exactly what that line is about. In terms of the general public? Those same fans that don't care about that line also don't care about the setting of the movie either. You can't say well....they don't care about the line but they sure care about the time frame and planet. Wait...what?!?!

#3 Again...what do I care that the analogy was stupid? That's not being defensive. This movie is directly tied to a line in another huge movie. It's something Star Wars fans do care about. The hammer was a prop and nothing more. How can you not see that it's not a poor analogy? Now who is being defensive?

Wow, personal attack much?

This is the first multi-cultural Star Wars film and when you have Donnie Yen as a star, you take advantage of what he can do. Maybe you don't know who Donnie Yen is since you seem to have simply stereotyped him.

#2 is so far off base, I wonder why you even bother reply to this thread at all.

when this movie makes 800 million to a billion dollars worldwide, it's gonna be hard to argue the general public doesn't care about this story.

Actually, many Bothans died to get the second death star plans. These are the first plans that Leia had and gave to R2D2.

Yep, you are right. Got my movies crossed. At any rate, it's still one of the questions everybody ponders. How did she get them? Who gave them to her? Also, there are lines in the first movie that indicated that C3PO and RD2D have gone through a bunch of action to get to that point.

"There'll be no escape for the princess this time."

This time?!? What were all the other times? According to Star Wars Rebels her involvement was very early.

Makes you wonder what all these adventures were before we got to that point in the movie. All of the dialogue in the 1st act leads you to believe that they suspected the Princess and Alderaan's role in the rebellion for some time. Their role in everything and how the Empire tracked them down and why is something I always pondered.

It's almost as if Star Wars (ANH) started midway through a story.

Yep, I agree. It should be fun.

Plus I won't spoil anything for anybody but the planet that is featured is rumored to play a significant role in in the "history" of the Jedi/Sith.

**************DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO BE POTENTIALLY SPOILED*********

The rumor is that the planet Jedha, where part of the movie takes place, is the source for all Lightsaber crystals used throughout history by the Sith and Jedi. Which makes sense why the Empire maybe originally took over that strategic target. It makes sense if they want to ensure the Jedi never return.

Youre working awfully hard to justify for somebody who doesn't need to justify it.

That reasoning is funny. Its OK for the character to be cliché because the actor is an Asian martial artist. lol. Thatd be fine if you were leading water to a horse. You got it backwards.

....you do realize they cast the Asian martial artist...because they needed an Asian martial artist to fill the pre-written role of "Asian jedi who does karate".

that's hilarious

Take if from someone who has experience racism. My view isn't from the standpoint of defending a cliche. I call it like I see it. See my complaints about the cliche portrayal of The Joker in the Suicide Squad thread. If you honestly think that using an actor who is known for martial arts is hired to play a fighter who uses martial arts.....you are sounding really ignorant on the topic.

Star Wars has always been multi-cultural. With all the hoopla around white washing characters I am sure there would have been people crying racism if they cast a white guy. You are so off base and it's not even funny.

Youre wrong on this subject. Stop trying to make it personal. They didn't write the part for Donnie Yen. They needed a guy to fill the already cliché role so they went and found Donnie. Moving on.

You missed the point. I don't care about this from a racism point of view. Its the fact its incredibly lazy writing. And that makes me expect there to be similar bad writing elsewhere in the movie, which is why I think it will be disappointing.

No you're ignorant on the subject. Nobody said they wrote the part for Donnie Yen. Now you're just making crap up to justify your point. That's very Trump like. Please show me where they were trying to cast for "Asian guy". That's a huge assumption on your part. How do you know they simply were not trying to find "martial artist"? If that was the case, there are not very many bigger names than Donnie Yen. Plus it adds to the multiculturalism of Star Wars.

You know what? It doesn't matter anyway. Should they have disqualified him from the part simply because he is Asian? What if they were casting for "Asian guy" just to add some other cultures into the universe, decided on Donnie Yen....then said....we have to take advantage of his popularity in martial arts?!?

I didn't miss your point at all. You first talked about a cliche and then tied in racism. You are trying to spin this into lazy writing and yet you have no idea what the intention of the character or casting was. It's pure speculation on you part. The fact that you thought that simply casting an Asian guy who does martial arts is racist is mind boggling.

Cliche? Possibly but to tie in racism? Dear Lord.

Well that's interesting and would be really cool.

I thought it was a solid rumor to be honest. Plus it would be much cooler of a reason to be there than simply, hey it's where we parked the Death Star so we go to planet X.
