Only marginal loser fans would actually think that injuries or officiating were significant. The true loser fan knows its the quarterback, the coach or the president that is the cause of every sports teams loss or the countrys problems.

Spurs Fan here. Live in SA, but was born in Phoenix.

Suns are exactly where the Spurs were before Popovich took over. I remember having great regular season records, only to impale ourselves on Utah, Lakers, or Phoenix during Barkley rein.

Reason? Spurs didn't play defense well, and wore themselves out during the regular season.

I don't know who will win THIS series, but the Suns won't have a shot at the championship until they develop a defensive mindset.

Didn't Pop make himself coach at the same time they acquired Duncan, though? That makes it tougher to tell if how vital Pop was. That said, I would definitely take Pop or Phil Jackson over D'A. I like D'A and think that he does learn and adjust just not quickly enough.

Pop (as GM) fired Bob Hill as coach the season before Tim was drafted and took over the coaching job. David Robinson had broken his foot, and Hill wasn't even trying to motivate the team to play through the season. Pop was hired as GM with the condition he bring Sean Elliott back to SA, which he did. Pop built the the Spurs pretty much from the ground up, but having David Robinson & Sean Elliott as an initial foundation was pretty decent, but adding Tim Duncan really got things going because DRob was on the downhill side of his career, and Sean Elliott's knees were going (the heavy use of anti-inflammation drugs are probably what contributed to his loss of kidney function during the 1999 championship run). Sean was a freakin' warrior that year (1999) given what health problems he was having and the incredible playoff run he had. He had to have a kidney transplant the summer after the playoffs.
