Braeden Archibald tripled and doubled and scored three runs Saturday, fueling the Johnstown baseball team in a 12-9 victory at West Muskingum in the season opener.

Sevi Chiddention racked up two hits, two runs and three RBIs for the Johnnies, who had a six-run second inning and a four-run seventh.

Erik Marohl added a hit, two runs and two RBIs and Landon Myers two hits, a run and an RBI. Garrett Penrod struck out five and allowed two earned runs in four innings of relief.

NC beats Danville​


Max Moore and Malone Hutchison recorded two hits and two RBIs apiece, hitting Newark Catholic past visiting Danville for a 12-2 victory.

Jaxon Holman also drove in two runs for the Green Wave (2-0), and Alex Nagel, Kane Stephey, Mikey Hess and Owen Przymierski added two hits each. Miller Hutchison and Hess combined to strike out and scatter five hits.

GCA wins on road​


Aidan Rhoads fired a four-hitter, striking out six and allowing one earned run, pitching Granville Christian to an 8-2 victory at Millersport.

Chaice Peters totaled two hits, two runs and an RBI to lead the offense. Rhoads added a hit, a run and three RBIs and Aiden Geiger and Josh Benvie a hit, a run and an RBI each for the Lions (2-0).

Granville splits​


Theo Talbott scored four runs out of the leadoff spot, sparking Granville in a season-opening 15-1 victory against River Valley. The Blue Aces later fell 7-1 to the Eagles.

Wilson Wells totaled two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Cy Sims two hits, a run and two RBIs, Jakob Culver a hit, two runs and two RBIs and Jacob Smith a double and three RBIs against the Vikings. Jackson McMillan struck out eight and allowed no earned runs in five two-hit innings.

Chase Holtzapple had two hits and A.J. Buerkel a hit and a run against the Eagles. Luke Bosse struck out six and allowed one earned run in 4 2/3 innings.

Valley edged late​


Annapolis Area Christian (Md.) scored six late runs, sending Licking Valley to a 7-6 loss in Myrtle Beach.

Brody Rodgers led the Panthers (2-1) with two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI, and Brandt Lichtenauer added a hit, a run and an RBI. Carter Sopher struck out two in three one-hit innings.

Newark drops opener​


Austin Rose managed two of Newark’s three hits against Tri-Valley standout Brady Kaufman in a 5-0 season-opening loss.

Aidan Hamilton also had a hit for the host Wildcats. Evan Humphrey struck out five and allowed four hits and two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Utica falls in Alabama​


Rossview (Tenn.) scored 13 runs in the fifth and sixth innings, sending Utica to a 14-6 defeat in Hoover, Alabama.

Elijah Bland led Utica (0-2) with three hits, including a triple, two runs and an RBI, and Connor Garee scored three runs. Aidyn Burgess struck out three in 4 2/3 innings.

Watkins nipped in extras​


Host Beech (Tenn.) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and one in the eighth, sending Watkins Memorial to a 6-5 defeat.

Tyler Vincent led the Warriors (1-2) with three hits, a run and an RBI, and Trent Johnson added two hits and an RBI and Jax Dotson a hit, a run and an RBI. Brayden Windnagel struck out five in three innings, and Ben Coffman struck out three and allowed no earned runs in two innings of relief.

Heights falls at Lancaster​


Grady Stephens’ two-run single gave Licking Heights the early lead, but that was all the Hornets (0-2) could muster in a 9-2 loss at Lancaster.

Maxim Fink led Heights with two hits and a run.

SOFTBALL​

Heath sweeps Newark​


Kylie Green’s RBI double in the sixth inning gave Heath a 4-3 victory against visiting Newark. The Bulldogs (3-2) later won 14-3 to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Sydney Cottrell homered, and Shelby Moore added a double and two RBIs in the first game for the Bulldogs. Moore also threw a six-hitter.

Lexi Shanaberg hit a two-run home run in the first game for the Wildcats. Maygen Woody allowed seven hits in six innings.

Kyndall Spicer hit two home runs and a double and drove in four runs in the second game for the Bulldogs, and Cottrell homered twice as well with three RBIs, and Leighton O’Reilly singled, scored two runs and drove in one. Green, who also homered allowed six hits and two earned runs.

Shanaberg and Amora Spring each homered for the Wildcats (0-6). Karma Wells added a hit and an RBI.

Northridge wins pair​


Ellie Reese threw four innings, striking out three with Kadance Adkins throwing the fifth, completing a no-hitter for Northridge in a 12-1 victory against visiting Franklin Heights. The Vikings (3-2) later won 24-6 to complete the sweep.

Kaitlyn Angus recorded two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI, Mary Cate Spang a double, a run, and an RBI, Cheyann Severance a hit, a run and an RBI and Josie VanFossen a triple and a run in the first game.

Camryn Moore homered and scored four runs and drove in three in the second game, and Spang added four hits, three runs and two RBIs, Reese three hits, two runs and an RBI, Adkins three hits, three runs and three RBIs and VanFossen two hits, three runs and three RBIs. Adkins also struck out nine in five three-hit innings.

Lakewood stays hot​


Jaycie Montie doubled twice and drove in four runs, powering Lakewood to a 7-4 victory against visiting Highland.

Averie Adams added two hits, including a double, and two runs, Lauren Griffith two hits and two RBIs and Ashlyn Carder two hits and a run for the Lancers (4-0). Carder struck out seven and allowed three earned runs.

Liberty drops home game​


Audrey Soliday doubled and singled and drove in a run for Liberty Christian in an 18-3 loss to visiting Whitehall.

Madison Looney added a triple and a run, Vanessa Carroll a hit and a run and Alissa Windle a hit and an RBI for the Eagles (0-2).

TRACK​

Jaf-ogunlayi takes top spot​


Temiloluwa Jaf-ogunlayi led the way for the Licking Heights girls during the season-opening Hammond Relays at Pickerington Central.

Jaf-ogunlayi ran a time of 12.5 seconds to win the 100-meter dash and covered a distance of 17 feet to turn in the top distance in the long jump.

Watkins Memorial’s foursome of Zoey Thompson, Anna Stewart, Natalie Davis and Dixita Pradhan won the sprint medley (4:21.19), and the foursome of Avalyn Hines, Kadence Gorrell, Ava Moore and Kiiera Holloway won the distance medley for the Warriors (14:14.05).

Watkins' Stewart, Ellah Bigham, Kamryn Caldwell and Kate Michael took runner-up in the 1,600 relay (4:18.14) as did Jessica Westlake Jocelyn Shardell, Nylah Harris and Aaista Poudel in the shuttle hurdles (1:14.79). Westlake also had the second-best clearance in the pole vault (8-6).

Heights’ Yuliana Cerant, Julia Lewis, Nyna Craddolph and Dreama Jackson-Peyton took runner-up in the sprint medley (4:25.20).

In the boys meet, Heights’ Alex Amartey recorded the top distance in the discus (145-7) and second-best mark in the shot put (47-0).

Watkins’ Evan Senter cleared a meet-best 11-0 in the pole vault. Teammate Ethan Martinez was second best in the high jump at 6-0.

Watkins’ Ray Hardiman took runner-up in the 100 (11.21) as did Hardiman, Jordan Dye, Koehn Concha and Troy Blankenship in the sprint medley (1:38.57). Heights’ Samolu Cooper, Cameron Gladney, Cayden Cross and Similoluwa Jaf-ogunlayi (43.64) took runner-up in the 400 relay.

McCracken leads Granville​


Annie McCracken cleared 12 feet to record the top mark in the pole vault for the Granville girls during Worthington Kilbourne’s Wolfe Relays.

Charlotte Turner recorded the second-best distance in the long jump (15-4), and Adaline Henshaw recorded the second-best distance in the shot put (27-6). Henshaw, Audrey Wurm, Garrett Hinton and Landon Gibson took runner-up in the mixed 400 relay (56.33).

Taft wins shot​


Ryder Taft threw a distance of 37 feet for the Granville Christian boys to win the event during Zanesville’s Wayne Clark Invitational.

Teammate Jacob Latshaw took runner-up in both the 800 (2:32.61) and 1,600 (5:28.41).

In the girls meet, Eliana Jackson won the 400 (1:04.90) for the Lions.
