Roundup: Four Licking County softball teams ranked in first state poll

Four Licking County League softball teams were ranked earlier this week in the top 10 of the first Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association state poll.

Lakewood was ranked No. 3 in Division IV and received three first-place votes. Licking Valley was not far behind, ranking in a tie for No. 5 in Division IV.

Watkins Memorial was ranked No. 7 in Division II. Newark Catholic was ranked No. 9 in Division VII.

Newark wins at home​


Lexi Shanaberg and Lilly Holmes delivered RBI singles to highlight a six-run fifth inning, lifting Newark to a 7-2 victory against visiting Logan in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Shanaberg and Holmes recorded two hits apiece, and Mallory Back added a hit and a run and Tyana Spears a run and an RBI for the Wildcats (4-11, 4-3). Amora Spring fired a two-hitter, striking out three and allowing one earned run.

Utica beats Northridge​


Makenna Wilson was a perfect 4 for 4, hitting two doubles and scoring three runs for Utica in a 15-5 victory against visiting Northridge in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Cheyenne Smith hit two home runs and drove in five runs, and Baleigh Torrens added two hits, including a home run, two runs and two RBIs and Kiersten Hull and Kaitlin Evans two hits and two runs apiece for Utica (4-5, 2-3). Smith also struck out seven in five innings.

Mary Cate Spang led the Vikings (4-7, 0-5) with two hits, a run and two RBIs. Kaylee Goodwin added a triple, a run and two RBIs and Camryn Moore and Kadence Adkins a hit and a run apiece.

BOYS LACROSSE​

Granville beats Academy​


Beckett Long’s hat trick led Granville to an 11-7 victory at Columbus Academy.

Landon Goss and Titus Terebuh added two goals apiece and Noble Terebuh, Josh Boggs, Matt Rosen and Evan Spiker one each with Noble Terebuh also contributing a team-high three assists for the Blue Aces (1-6). Davis Williamson made 10 saves.

Johnstown wins in OT​


A.J. Hollis scored off an assist from Jason Hettinger, giving Johnstown a 6-5 overtime victory against visiting Buckeye Valley.

Hettinger led the Johnnies (6-3) with two goals, and Logan Brown, Will Taylor and Warren Miller added one each. Ben Smith made nine saves, and Grady Balog and Anthony Bleas caused five turnovers apiece.

Newark falls on road​


Miekel Eller scored his first goal for Newark in an 18-3 loss at Pickerington North in OCC play.

Hunter Berona and Drayson Peterson also scored, and Oheneba Asenso added a team-high two assists for the Wildcats (4-4, 0-2). Landon Sifford made 12 saves.

TRACK​

Osborn wins pair​


Allison Osborn won the throwing events for the host Licking Valley girls during a meet against Newark Catholic and Hamilton Township.

Osborn measured a distance of 105 feet, 2 inches to win the discus, and she also won the shot put (33-6.75). Teammates Isabelle Cox in the high jump (4-6) and Stella Bowman in the 1,600-meter run (6:21.5) also won individual events for the Panthers.

Individual winners for NC were Paityn Green in the long jump (14-2), Avery Yehle in the 800 (2:42.5) and Karoline Barner in the 3,200 (14:27.3).

In the boys meet, Valley’s Hunter White won the shot out (44-2.5). Teammates Anthony Blizzard in the 800 (2:05.8) and Jonathon White in the 1,600 (5:08.8) matched him.

Grady Householder-Wise won the 3,200 (12:38.3) for the Green Wave.

Dye leads Watkins​


Jordan Dye crossed the finish line in a time of 23.85 second to win the 200-meter dash for the Watkins Memorial boys during a dual against visiting Lancaster.

Dye earlier won the 400 (53.65).

In the girls meet, Watkins individual winners were Aaista Poudel in the 100 hurdles (18.51), Jessica Westlake in the 300 hurdles (54.56) and Morgan Cumbo in the high jump (4-10).

Amartey wins three​


Alex Amartey won a trio of field events for the Licking Heights boys on April 14 in a meet at Olentangy Orange with Delaware.

Amartey threw the discus 158 feet, 10 inches. He also won the shot put (48-10) and high jump (5-10).

Other individual winners for the Heights boys were Samolu Cooper in the 100-meter dash (11.26) and 200 (23.11), Jemarion Harvey in the 110 hurdles (19.21) and 300 hurdles (46.41) and Yannick Sekou Trion in the 400 (54.15).

In the girls meet, Temiloluwa Jaf-ogunlayi won the 100 (12.49) and long jump (15-10.5), and Sabrina Bauer matched her, winning the 100 hurdles (17.77) and 300 hurdles (51.74) for the Hornets.

BOYS TENNIS​

Newark nipped​


Newark won a pair of three-set matches in a 3-2 loss at Canal Winchester in OCC-Buckeye play.

Layton Shaner won at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, and Grayson Boyer and Viktor Gleckler, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, won at No. 1 doubles for the Wildcats (5-2, 2-1).
