Lily Meidl’s second home run of the game April 14 gave the Licking Heights softball team a 7-6 victory in eight innings at Watkins Memorial in Licking County League-Buckeye Division play. The Hornets earned their first victory in the rivalry since 2014.
Meidl previously hit a game-tying grand slam in the fourth inning as Heights overcame a 4-0 deficit. The Hornets later rallied from a 6-4 deficit.
"I just tried to stay relaxed," Meidl said of her eighth-inning at-bat. "I was focusing on getting a base hit, hitting my pitch and staying smooth. I wasn't trying to go for anything too big."
Lydia Rauch added three hits, Savanna Christ, Natalie Mahoney and Ava Von Bargen a hit and a run each and Ali West a run and an RBI for the Hornets (7-5, 3-2). Mahoney struck out six and allowed three earned runs.
"It's amazing that even though in past years we haven't really gotten the outcome we wanted, we just keep pushing," Meidl said. "It feels good that we can actually finish these games."
Kylie Trouten led the Warriors (7-4, 3-2) with a two-run home run and an RBI single, and Paisley Conley added two hits and a run, Marissa Weber a hit, a run and two RBIs and Alli Langwasser three hits. Jacy Severance and Kendal Tellings struck out three apiece.
Tyana Spears racked up three hits and scored four runs for Newark in a 14-3 victory at Reynoldsburg in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.
Mallory Back added two hits, two runs and an RBI, Lilly Holmes a hit, two runs and two RBIs and Calyn Music a double, two runs and an RBI for the Wildcats (3-11, 3-3). Maygen Woody struck out two in three four-hit innings.
Savannah Lawson hit a two-run double in front of Shelby Moore’s two-run home run, highlighting a five-run fifth inning in Heath’s 6-3 victory at Newark Catholic in LCL-Cardinal play.
Moore also had an RBI double, and Megan DeVito added two hits, a run and an RBI and Lexi Purington a hit and a run for the Bulldogs (8-4, 5-0). Moore allowed four hits and a run in four innings.
Jahni Whitney struck out two in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Green Wave (4-5, 2-3). Joanna Snider had two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI, and Emma Lohri and Avery Sullivan added a hit and an RBI apiece.

Ashlyn Carder struck out six and allowed two runs in six innings of relief.

Riley Stefanick homered, scoring twice and driving in two for the Johnnies (6-6, 2-3). Kuhn added two doubles, a run and an RBI, Abigail Wood three runs and Cam Bollinger and Reese Lyons a hit, a run and an RBI apiece.

Michael Hare’s victory in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0, completed Watkins Memorial’s sweep of visiting Gahanna.
Graham Smith, 6-4, 6-3, and Wyatt Meade, 6-4, 7-5, also won singles matches for the unbeaten Warriors (7-0). Gavin Adelman and Nathan Walter, 6-3, 6-3, and Chase Smith and Parker Carte, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, won doubles matches.
