Nate Hite escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the seventh inning April 16, securing the Utica baseball team’s first victory of the season, 7-6 at Licking Heights in Licking County League play.

Hite sandwiched two ground outs around a strikeout after Heights started the inning with three consecutive singles. Utica took the lead in the top of the inning when Braxton Fisher singled home Gaige Spray.

Gavin Tussey led Utica (1-8, 1-4) with two hits and two RBIs, and Fisher added two hits and Spray, Connor Garee and Weston Simon each a hit and an RBI. Jaxson Riggs allowed two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Maxim Fink and Brady Pennington totaled two hits and two runs apiece with Pennington knocking in two runs and Grady Stephens adding two hits and two RBIs and Peyton Pennington two hits and a run for the Hornets (1-7, 0-4). Johnny Morgan allowed one hit and one earned run in three innings, and Blake Caldwell struck out five in four innings of relief.

Watkins beats Johnstown​


Brody Kemmerling fired six one-hit innings, striking out four and allowing no earned runs in Watkins Memorial’s 6-2 victory against visiting Johnstown in LCL play.

Trent Johnson doubled twice, scored a run and drove in two for the Warriors (5-3, 4-1). Dylan Gray and Jax Dotson added a hit and a run apiece, Bradley Vincent a hit and an RBI and Aydan Guthrie two runs.

Carter Holbrook had a hit and a run and Landon Myers two RBIs for the Johnnies (6-2, 3-2).

Granville beats Northridge​


A.J. Buerkel doubled and scored three runs out of the leadoff spot, fueling Granville in an 11-2 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL play.

Lewis Turner added two hits, two runs and an RBI and Theo Talbott and Jacob Smith a hit, a run and an RBI apiece for the Blue Aces (7-2, 4-1). Chase Holtzapple struck out three and allowed one earned run in six three-hit innings.

Noah Mason led the Vikings (3-4, 0-4) with two hits and a run. Collin Matheson added a hit and a run and Riley Reeves a hit and an RBI.

Lakewood wins at Zanesville​


Evan Moore fired a two-hitter, allowing an unearned run and striking out two in Lakewood’s 3-1 victory at Zanesville (4-5, 2-2) in LCL play.

Colton Ferry led the Lancers (6-2, 4-1) with three hits, a run and an RBI out of the leadoff spot. Carter Davis added two hits and a run and Gavin Kessler two hits and an RBI.

NC edged on road​


Kane Stephey struck out four and allowed one hit in three scoreless innings of relief for Newark Catholic in a 6-5 loss at Mount Vernon (4-5, 2-3) in LCL play.

Owen Przymierski led the Green Wave (5-4, 2-4) with two hits, including a double, and a run. Miller Hutchison added two hits and an RBI, Stephey and Mikey Hess an RBI apiece and Jaxon Holman three runs.

SOFTBALL​

Valley beats Heath​


Emory Whisner hit a two-run home run and scored three times in Licking Valley’s 12-2 victory against visiting Heath in a battle of LCL leaders.

D’Neya Dennis and Alexa Gilliam added two hits, two runs and an RBI apiece, Dani Lambert a hit, two runs and an RBI and Liz Korns a hit and two RBIs for the Panthers (9-2, 6-0). Whisner struck out six and allowed four hits in five innings.

Megan DeVito and Kyndall Spicer had a hit and a run scored for the Bulldogs (8-5, 5-1). Kylie Green added a double.

Watkins rallies at home​


Gracie Gerhardt hit a grand slam in the third inning and an RBI single in the fourth, powering Watkins Memorial to an 8-6 victory against visiting Johnstown in LCL play.

Sierra Fuchs added two hits and two runs, Marlee Gerhardt a hit, a run and an RBI and Bryan Davis a hit and a run for the Warriors (8-4, 4-2), who overcame an early 6-0 deficit. Jacy Severance struck out three and allowed three hits in 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Addy Zak, Lucia Kuhn and Jenna Hochanadel led the Johnnies (3-6, 2-4) with two hits each, combining for three runs and three RBIs. Emma McGeehan added a triple, a run and an RBI.

Granville blanks Northridge​


Josie Opfer struck out three and allowed four hits in four shutout innings in Granville’s 15-0 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL play.

Megan Lodge totaled two hits, three runs and three RBIs to lead the Blue Aces (5-6, 2-4). Aubrey Lackey added two hits, three runs and two RBIs, Ainsley Johnson two hits and two runs and Bella Metcalf two hits, a run and two RBIs.

Camryn Moore doubled for the Vikings (4-8, 0-6). Mary Cate Spang, Kaitlyn Angus and Kadance Adkins each singled.

Heights rallies past Utica​


Lydia Rauch totaled two hits, a run and three RBIs as Licking Heights scored eight runs in its last two at-bats in a 10-6 victory against visiting Utica in LCL play.

Ali West added three hits, including a triple, and three runs, Ava Von Bargen and Lily Meidl two hits and two runs apiece, combining for three RBIs and Hailey Anderson and Serenity Gutridge a double and a run apiece for the Hornets (8-5, 4-2). Rauch also allowed two earned runs in a six-hitter.

Kaitlin Evans led Utica (4-6, 2-4) with two triples, a run and two RBIs. Bethany Glancy added a double and an RBI and Makenna Wilson and Kenzie Fletcher a hit and a run apiece.

Lakewood wins on road​


Briana Hoisington racked up three hits, including two doubles, two runs and three RBIs, fueling Lakewood in a 13-1 victory at Zanesville (0-9, 0-6) in LCL play.

Cora Redman added three hits, two runs and an RBI, Averie Adams a hit and three RBIs and Jaycie Montie a hit and two RBIs for the Lancers (12-1, 5-1). Adams and Ashlyn Carder combined for 12 strikeouts in five one-hit innings.

Newark drops home game​


Mallory Back hit a triple and scored a run for Newark in a 25-3 loss to visiting Lancaster in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Lexi Shanaberg and Tyana Spears added a double and an RBI apiece and Calyn Music a double and a run for the Wildcats (4-12, 4-4).

NC drops road game​


Addison Gerber had a hit and a run for Newark Catholic in an 11-1 loss at Mount Vernon (9-2, 4-2) in LCL play.

Emma Lohri and Joanna Snider added a hit apiece for the Green Wave (4-6, 2-4)

Watkins sweeps​


Watkins Memorial did not drop a set in a 5-0 victory against Canal Winchester.

Graham Smith, 6-1, 6-2, Michael Hare, 6-1, 6-2, and Chase Smith, 6-1, 6-3, won singles matches for the unbeaten Warriors (8-0). Nathan Walter and Gavin Adelman, 6-0, 6-0, and Wyatt Meade and Jeffrey Smith, 6-0, 6-1, won doubles matches.

Newark edged on road​


Grayson Boyer and Viktor Gleckler rallied for a win at No. 1 doubles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, for Newark in a 3-2 loss at Mount Vernon.

Evan Devries picked up a win at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-3, for the Wildcats (5-3).
