Honestly...the line hasn't been terrific in pass protection, but there are so many sacks caused by Rudy either holding the ball too long or turning into the rush or not stepping up. Is this something that can be taught???

I think its a combination of bad line play, not enough short quick routes by the receivers to give him someone to dump off to, and Rudy locking in on one receiver. It does seem to improve as games wear on, I really hope they can at least get decent at this phase of the game or Cal, Oregon and USC will kill them.

only 1 or two of the sacks was from the QB, the line is bad. I know it's not as easy as zeroing in on the QB, but it's bad.

Watched the replay again. Three sacks from UNBLOCKED rushers. Two other sacks came with Rudy not even able to finish his drop.

This is one of the more mobile quarterbacks with decent escapability that ASU's had. Have no idea if he's locking onto a receiver, but I don't believe ASU's ever had a *smarter* QB. Both Koetter and Erickson have been dazzled by Rudy's understanding of reading defenses and learning the offense quickly. Erickson said he's never had a QB who learned his offense so fast.

I have no doubt he is smart...I just think he is extremely lacking in pocket presence. Turning into the rush FAR too often and not getting rid of the ball are killing me...

And I actually thought Walter had very good presence....don't have to be fast to have good presence.

From what I used to see, Walter would stay there and hang onto the ball until the last moment, but would get it away and avoid the sacks. He took a lot of hits but got the ball to where he needed too. Rudy is scared to throw it because he doesn't have confidence in his ability, only cockiness.

He'd hold on too long get hit at the last second winding up with an incomplete pass or Int--his completion % and sack rate weren't very good. He played in a great passing offense with some playmakers at WR and TE--he was severely overrated while he was here still is.

Rudy is completing about 60% of his passes throughout his career, Walter had a career completion % of 54%.

FWIW, coaches are discouraging Rudy from running (like he did the first three games of the year) and instead finding someone downfield for a bigger play.

Rudy does drive me crazy sometimes. Especially, when he scrambles backwards and takes a 20 yard loss. So many times, my wife and I are yelling at the TV, "Get rid of it!!"

I think a lot of his issues have to do with the poor line play. However, there are times when it seems like if he would just take a step up into the pocket, he would avoid the sack, or at least give himself another second or two. Without going back to the replay and breaking down the blocking, it seems like the line is doing a decent job up the middle, but is having trouble blocking the ends. When Rudy scrambles backward or takes the long drop, he's giving those ends a perfect angle past the line.

Just my non-expert, uninformed opinon.

Andrew Walter is gone so I don't think about him any more.

Rudy seems to be a gunslinger who has been partially restrained by Erickson and ordered to focus on not turning the ball over. The more I think about it, Asudave01 gave a good explanation of Rudy's major flaw.

Rudy simply doesn't have that internal clock in his head that tells him its time to get rid of it..

I am as big of an ASU fan as there is, but Carpentar is TERRIBLE... and we dont have a SHOT IN HELL of beating Cal, Oregan, OR USC as long as he plays the way hes played..

Im REALLY worried about this weeks game.....

You're insane if you think Rudy Carpenter is terrible. 75% of D1 programs would kill to have Rudy C on their roster. Does he have holes in his game? Sure. Are they mostly fixable? Indeed.

Ok..I have you watched Rudy play over the past two seasons....

He is a game manager, he has a high completion percentage and QB rating because he REFUSES to throw the ball away...

You know that Carpentar has been sacked 22 times this season... 22!! That is 4th in the nation, right behind the incredible powerhouses of Syracuse, Iowa, and Duke.....

I really wish there was a stat that measured how many times a QB had the ability to throw the ball away, but instead took a 10+ yard sack.... Guarnteed Rudy would lead the nation...

Is our Offensive line bad... yeah, but how many 2 and 20s have we had because Rudy hasn't been able to read a defensve blitz and know when to get the ball away...

Do i think he is a below average QB.. yes

Do I think he has a chance to be better.. absolutely... but as long as he continues to struggle reading defenses, we won't beat any elite team.... IMO

asudude, Rudy Carpenter a below average QB? Whoa. You and Card Trader are dead wrong, in my opinion.

Rudy is a superior QB and will finish as one of the best to ever play at ASU.

Hey I don't think Rudy is a bad QB...just has bad pocket presence. And regardless of what you think of him Skkorp, you can't even BEGIN to argue against that. He did seem better against Washington, stepping up into the pocket etc., but up until that game he has been dreadful.

hoover and skorp, do y'all still think he has good pocket presence after the oregon game? please go back and watch his sacks. watch as he figures out there is a blitz LATE (no recognition that it is coming) and instead of trying to make a play or just throw the ball away to avoid a sack he immediately curls into fetal position before being touched. i really don't think i'm exaggerating when i say that i think i saw him do this at least 5 times.

Ouchie, one game does not define a player.

I've seen Ryan from BC look terrible under pressure many times this year. Vtech had him whipped and then went into a 3 man rush on BC's last two possessions, allowing him to roam around until he found somebody open.

Rudi has no chance at the NFL but he's a better-than-average college QB.

Scouts are already projecting Rudy as a mid round NFL pick.

it wasn't just this game. it's been my assessment going back to last year.

however, i don't really disagree with your assessment. i think he's got nothing at the next level and you're right, he is above average for college, but this is a close to elite team THIS year, and he's subpar comparatively speaking. i think he's worse than longshore, dixon, booty in the conference alone.

i just cringe whenever i see the blitz b/c i know that play is automatically done. i don't understand why d coordinators don't blitz rudy every down.

I know I am going to get flamed for this but I am completly on board with how spineless Rudy is - especially in the face of the rush.

And from everything I have read from high school to now he is a huge baby and completely not what he seems. Meaning he is no leader.

I agree that he is a better than average college QB and he will be just good enough to break your heart. But even though he went down earlier IMO you guys f'ed up by not sticking with Keller. In fact I think Sam would have been the perfect QB for Erickson. One rogue to another.

Nothing will align Devil fans like this next statement however. I think Tui is better than him (over the course of this season he has really started responding to the spread and has had 2-3 RIDICULOUS games) and is continuing to get better every game.

I am hoping he will prove that he is the better QB come the last regular season game.
