#1 On the slant pass for a TD that was thrown past the los by Green Bay their other WRs were blocking our DBs both before and while the ball was in the air. Is that legal? I thought pick plays were against the rules.

#2 I see a lot of offensive linemen pushing their ball carriers forward these days. I was under the impression that it was an infraction for an offensive lineman to help a ball carrier forward. Did that rule change?

#3 when did it become legal to grab a defender's jersey and shoulder pads? I see that now on almost every play.

The offensive player can engage the DB within one yard of the neutral zone and can maintain the contact for three yards. On the play that I think you are talking about, Aikman said that he thought that it should be a penalty.

It is a penalty to push or pull the runner. I think the grey area lies with - is the blocker trying to clean off the defensive player(s) from the runner? It becomes obvious when hands are used. Not so obvious without.

#3 is never called. On the GB pick play the wr had both hands grabbing jersey and shoulder pads. Saw it several times in plain sight on replays Saturday in different games. Especially common on down field blocks.

Jake, I think #2 is the reason ya'boy Lutui is out of the league. He was always hitting the pile to move it forward to move the runner. What we liked about him cost him his job... not his weight

I have heard it explained that as long as the blocker hands are inside the defenders frame, holding will not be called

one the hands go outside the frame, the chances of getting holding called go way up

That being said, that explanation rarely helps me when I watch games.........

That's what I read at the nfl official rules site. But grabbing the jersey at the outside of a defenders shoulders along with the shoulder pads and using that as leverage to move the defensive player doesn't sound like it fits the definition of staying inside the frame. I wish I could do screen shots from game rewind like K9 so I could post that blocking technique here.

Having seen evidence of the type of issues Duckjake has raised here in numerous games, for a couple of years, it is my opinion that the non-calls on all three of these rule infractions are encouraged by the league office. I think the league continues to follow the assumption that more offense and hence more scoring appeals to the fans, especially casual fans. They may very well be correct, but I come from more of an old school, one that enjoys good defense as much as good offense. The non-enforcement of these rules aggravates me!

A former NFL lineman who is now a TV color announcer said that a lineman will not make it in the NFL if he does not learn to hold without being caught. PLayers will get away with as much as the officials allow or do not see. In fact they go over the tendencies of the umpires before games.

Have to agree. And that is why the Big 12 teams cannot play defense. The leagues referees simply will not call holding unless it is extremely obvious. And even then they will ignore it half the time.
