There is a rumor going around that Ryan Gomes might get cut by the TWolves and sign back with the Celtics. Cross your fingers.

Isn't there a rule now that players can't get cut after a trade and re-sign with their previous team for a year? Isn't that the Gary Payton rule from another Celtics trade?

If he does get cut, though, I really would like to see the Suns offer him a long term contract, use part of their mid-level, and just suck it up. He'd be a great guy to have on this team for the next 5 years.

why in the world would the Wolves cut a good young guy like this who can actually ball?

well....their are 3 or 4 other players that i would cut WAY before Gomes.

and if this were some under the table agreement between the two clubs...i think that this type of thing is illegal now.

here's something i found off Larry Coon's CBA

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#54

If a team trades a player and the player is waived by the receiving team, the player's original team cannot re-sign that player for 30 days (during the season) or 20 days (during the offseason) following the date of the trade.

i'm not sure waivers are the same as being cut....if someone could clarify

So does that mean he could re-sign with Boston after 3 weeks? That doesn't seem like much of a deterrent.

I like Gomes a lot. I always thought of him as a poor man's Shawn Marion. It seems I read somewhere he was injured or something of the sort. Although the Suns seem loaded at SF, I would certainly welcome his presence because he can flat out play (if healthy).

well....

rule 54 also states that a player can be claimed off waivers by ANY team that either has cap space or a TPE they can use.

would his $770k salary really keep ANY team with the ability to from claiming him?

i guess though that Minny COULD just by the kid out, and he'd become a UFA.

that's pretty shady of them though to do.

He'd definitely play power forward for us. That would mean that Amare/Diaw and maybe Marks would play center, and Marion/Gomes/Diaw would play power forward.

I don't know why the TWolves would want to waive him other than maybe because he was included in the trade only to make the numbers work and the TWolves agreed to cut him so that he can go back to Boston. Yes, any team can claim him off the waivers, but if they go by last season's standings then only Memphis had a worse record than Boston, so if Memphis doesn't claim him (maybe there's an agreement there too already) Boston would be next in line.

I don't get why they would waive him. Why not just trade him to us for a second round pick? We can absorb him with part of the James Jones trade exception and still have all of our KT exception to use over the next year if anything really amazing shows up.

That's what I was thinking. There are a handful of teams that would go for that.

hmm, didn't think about that. I'd be all for that deal. We get more depth and three point shooting (which we still need), not to mention a young up and coming player. Seriously, he's cheap and seems to be able to fit our system and Minny's got a ton of guys on the team. Maybe this could happen, probably with the Sonics' second rounder.

If they do waive him, it was because they had a deal with Boston to do so. Boston did this with Gary Payton, and it is a smart move. They trade a player to make a trade work, and then get that player back.

I would love him on the Suns, but I am pretty sure part of the deal was that he was going to be waived and return to the Celtics.

I know that he loves Boston, and has told a friend of mine that "he would never want to leave". Top that off with Ainge and Rivers press conferences where I hear that they both just talked about how great Gomes was and that he was the best professional he had ever seen in 25 years.

so, if this is true, then you have Gomes, House, Scalabrine on the bench as vets to go along with KG, Pierce, Allen, Rondo and Perkins? They get one more solid vet and I'm starting to believe that team is actually talented enough to win the whole damn thing, much less just get to the Finals.

How long does a player stay on the waivers? A few days? He has a great contract this year. If he gets waived Memphis will grab in a heartbeat. If they don't grab him another team surely will, and Boston can't re-sign him until 20-30 days later.

Have I completely missed something here? I know I didn't take the time to read Larry Coon on this.

I'm really unclear on the waiver rules. My read on it is that they go in the pre-lottery draft order, so Memphis would get the first pick. I'd be very surprised if they let him pass.

I'm not sure the Suns have anything to offer in a trade, but I'd love it if they could make a deal.

Gomes is a power forward no matter where he goes.

He played power for the Celts most the way.

He is a young, more gifted Rodney Rogers. Very athletic. Good rebounder.

Definately stronger than Marion at power forward.

Bring him on any way u can.

The deal on waivers is (approximately): For the first 72 hours teams can claim the player but have to pay his full salary. If multiple teams claim in that time frame the one with worst regular season record the prior year gets him. After that he can choose where he goes and the team that waived him is responsible to pay him whatever his guarantteed contract calls for minus what he gets from his new team.

250 lbs?

he's heavy for his height..

Yes, he is a big heavy fella. But very very athletic and super strong.

A great banger that can score.

Kind of like a RODNEY ROGERS on steroids and red bull.

It would be a dream come true if he is a Phoenix Sun. Adds rebounding edge.

He'd be a nice trade pickup, but I can't see a scenerio that would make it work.
