8. Cards Will Hire New O.C.

Assuming that Arizona coach Dennis Green doesn't try to finagle an early release from his contract so that he can land a better gig for 2006, the Cardinals are likely to fire their offensive coordinator, for the second straight season.

Last year, the coordinator who got thrown under the bus was Alex Wood, who worked with Green during the latter years of his tenure in Minnesota. This year, the one-and-out offensive coordinator is Keith Rowen, who also spent a few seasons on Green's staff in Minnesota.

Our guess is that the new coordinator could be Mike Tice, another loyal Green lieutenant from his days with the Vikings

I don't think this will happen. But, it's more plausible than Tice becoming our o-line coach.

Tice isn't coming here. Rowen did a fine job in his first year as an OC. The Cards need stability, not a shaking up. This team's problems are obvious, and you fix those directly, not with wholesale changes.

The Cards offense moved the ball but had problems in the red zone. That is due to having no running game. What can an OC do when half his playbook is taken away? We need to address the OL and the OL coach not the OC.

That's basically a summary of what Green and Graves say in the Tribune article I just posted. Although some coaches will be gone, I don't think it will be at the coordinator level. There will not be a drastic roster overturn this year either.

The Cards offense will finish with their highest ranking since 1993! Considering how pathetic the run game was, that's pretty amazing. Rowen did a decent job. I'd rather see some continuity there, we've had 4 new OCs the last 4 seasons.

This is exactly why I hate 'stats' and 'tankings'...we're STILL gonna end up with 5-6 wins and go home before a playoff game..AGAIN.
The ONLY stat that matters and the only stat that will get us ANY respect is the W-L record.

I can't imagine Rowen being out under any circumstance

If we had a running game behind a half way decent OL then we would be in the playoffs.

So, does that mean you think Rowen should be fired?

We all know wins are all that matters. Our offense was far better than Chicago's this year, but we'd all trade places with the Bears in heartbeat.

That would be a mistake IMHO, but it wouldn't stun me. With Tice onboard Green would likely retain Lindsay because people would assume Tice can help him coach the OL. That's precisely what Green tried to do this year with Rowen and it proved to be too much for one guy(also being asked to help with the TE's) but if you have financial limits on assistants, one way to get around that is ask your assistant to serve multiple roles.

Just not much of a Tice fan I think he'd be fine as the OL coach, but as an OC I don't expect much from him. I'd like to see Rowen get another year, with a real OL coach, so he can concentrate on HIS job.

I'm not sure what the exact problem is. If Rowen is calling bad plays, isn't it up the DG to over ride a play if it's a bad call? I don't know how it works all the time. If a Run game is bad, who is to blame? The RB? The Line? The coaches? I don't know...at the end of every year we always hear, "Yeah but we improved in this certain area, we're only a few players away"...every year...and then the next year comes and we suck, we get injured, players don't play well..etc... I guess I'm just totally frustrated with this team doing the same year after year....gggrrrr....

IMO Rowen is here to stay and should be. With a beat up offensive line, no running back and changes at QB. He still called the plays to our strength with teh pass. Our skill players at the WR position did the job very well. Our TE's improved and the use of them improved.

If a new OC can create a running game with our OL and RB's he is a genius so bring him on. It was not the play calling or coaching that kept us from gaining 1-2 yards at critical times. It was the players.

I can't believe any of you are seriously considering replacing Rowan.

1. Our O-line has been decimated.
2. We have the number one passing offense in the entire league.

So tell me again how Rowan hasn't done a phenomenal job under the circumstances.

Not one of us said Rowen should be replaced. I'm just passing on a rumor from profootballtalk.

If Rowen is replaced, it not due to his performance. It would be due to a guy like Tice being available to be hired.

Due to a guy like Tice?? What kind of guy is that? Tice isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. I'm OK with hiring him to be OLC, but definitely NOT OC.

If the success Rowen has helped bring to this offense is superceded by a case of cronyism with Mike Tice, count me as the first to ask for Denny's firing for it. That being said, it's just a rumor. You don't replace an OC who just helped bring the #1 passing offense in the league. You replace the OL coach, players, and take a look at the schemes that brought about the last place rushing offense in the league. Big's false starts need to dissappear next season, or we need to sh*#can him.

Rowen has brought us a # 1 passing offense in the NFL..Denny Green came out and said that it was his fault of not addressing the offensive line during the season...So how can you fire Rowan for something he has no control over. It's the O-Lines fault for not producing (Lindsey)

I'd say they combined the DG speech about changing coaches with, hey Tice is available and just dug deep in there nether regions and whipped that one out.

There were some questionable calls from Rowen in the endzone today, but i would stick with him... He has gotten this offense into something to build on. Remember it is his first year as an OC and has matured dramatically... And did quite well given the circumstances with injuries and no run game.... We wouldn't get anywhere by bringing some other OC in and have to learn that offense all over when the players seem to be taken to Rowens plan....Fix the OL and it will open up things...

I think that Rowen should stay, he did well for a rookie.
