OMG, Starks cant even practice 2 days in a row. Our only backups are hill? Who tweeked his ankle today.

We play in what division? Rams and 49ers I believe? Nah we dont need and Veteran CB's for depth... Were the Cardinals, why would we need any help?

He was playing safety for the Chargers and apparently has a foot injury that's been limiting him.

I'm with Tango on this one. Safety is one of our stronger positions on the field. Besides, other than Emmitt, how many "old" guys do you see being added to this team?

NFL.com reports he's a 10-year veteran, not 12.

Isn't McNeil a saftey? I thought he was, but I'm not sure (and too lazy too look it up). We're looking pretty good (and young) at saftey, so I'd say pass on him. He might be able to bring some leadership, but he might stunt the growth of a guy like Lucas; and we have enough of that going on with the Emmitt/Shipp situation--and McNeil is no Emmitt.

Well he's originally a corner, if he can still play corner I say bring him in. If he is limited to only safety then I would agree we are pretty deep there. Anyone know why he was playing safety? He had 8 INT two years ago so he may be a decent pickup, IF he can still play CB.

08.12.03 - The Chargers have released veteran defensive back Ryan McNeil, the team announced on Tuesday.
McNeil is a veteran of 10 NFL seasons, including the last two with the Chargers. In 2002, he started 15 of 15 games at right cornerback, collecting 79 tackles and one interception.

McNeil originally signed with Chargers as an unrestricted free agent from Dallas in 2001 and earned his first-career Pro Bowl nomination that season by recording 77 tackles and a team-high eight interceptions while starting all 16 games.

McNeil’s career totals include 136 starts in 157 games played, 745 tackles and 31 interceptions. His two-year totals with the Chargers were 31 starts in 31 games, 156 tackles and nine interceptions.

McNeil’s NFL career include four years in Detroit (1993-1996), two in St. Louis (1997-98), one in Dallas (2000) and two in San Diego (2001-2002).

After playing cornerback for his entire career, McNeil had been working at free safety this offseason with the Chargers.

In other news, the Chargers also released wide receiver Onome Ojo.

Jeez, what's the deal? First Seau, then Rodney Harrison, now McNeil. Are the Chargers just trying to purge all the former Pro Bowlers from their defense?

Nah they are just purging their locker room leadership and replacing them with Cancer like Boston.

as I noted in another post..joe bugel (former coach for chargers and resident of san diego) said wiley is the new self proclaimed leader of the defense...but he has a "I do not practice" attitude..maybe they are purging the guys who like to practice?? Bugel said harrison and junior brought it everyday and went after guys like wiley who did not want to practice..what the heck..maybe 1/2 the team will not be practicing anymore!

On KDUS, Dave Pasch just said he thinks the Cardinals will "take a long look" at McNeil. Implied they wouldn't be the only team interested.

Dave also said that the Cards will go after an alternative at QB if they decide McCown's not good enough. Said that "they have the money and they're not afraid to spend it." (So what are they waiting for?)

Denver and Detroit are also interested in CB's. They've brought in just about every one available so far. If there's someone we want at CB, we shouldn't sit on our hands and have "discussions."

McNeil was moved to safety this year.
Speed was never his forte to begin with. He's a heady player and was looked at as a team leader on the Chargers.

Checking out the San Diego boards, there's been quite a bit of comment on it.
A somewhat surprising move to a lot of fans there, but also the general consensus seems to be....an understandable one.

His heady play and leadership qualities just weren't enough to compensate for his lack of speed and remaining physical skills.

I do stand corrected, this will be his 11th year, not his 12th.

At this point he was beat out by Kwamie as FS position.

The Chargers probably would have liked to keep him for his leadership skills with their young secondary.

So, once more I say. Yes, he's a nice guy, but not what we need here. We need speed and physical talent, not more slow veteran "leaders".

McNeil, Rodney Harrison, and Junior Seau led the Chargers to a last place finish in pass defense last year.

We've got to get past this idea that everybody else's ageing retreads are better than what we have here now.

C'mon Skkorp. Just because he was on a below average defense doesn't mean he can't play a role to improve a weak position on our team.

He was one of those that constituted the below average defense.
His salary might very well have been a factor in his release, but the simple fact remains: He got cut from one of the worst secondaries in the NFL last year. Evidently Marty and the Chargers feel they are better off with young unproven talent than him.
Skkorp was exactly right. Some people need to get over this mentality of thinking other teams old cast off's are a key to improving this team.
