Dbacks infielder Ryan Roberts designated for assignment. One team source says he'll probably he'll be traded.

There we have it. RT @JackMagruder #Dbacks Roberts said he was told deal was on the "1-yard line."

Nick Piecoro ‏@nickpiecoro
Roberts was hitting just .250 with a .663 OPS. Dbacks third basemen have the second-worst OPS (.632) in the NL.

Sad to seem him go, but he wasn't getting it done this year.

Good Luck TatMan

Before they emerged, I thought that Rusty Ryal had far greater potential than Ryan Roberts. (That's a lot of R's.) First I was disappointed with the former, then the latter. Each actually had a second chance with the D'backs, you might say.

Best wishes, TatMan. Thanks for the memories.

I would say the Diamondbacks were done with Ryan Roberts...

Now lets see what happens with Chris Young in coming months.

Some info on him:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/roberry01.shtml

He had a career year last year. His BA was .249 but it seemed he was always getting key hits. Unless there is a trade for a 3B man, looks like we are going with Wheeler and Davidson.

Rumors have ARZ along with six other teams linked to SD's Chase Headley so I see this as a move to prelude another move. Davidson and Wheeler are not ready IMO.

It was just announced that Roberts has been traded to Tampa for a player to be assigned to Reno. I didn't catch his name.

The #Diamondbacks acquire infielder Tyler Bortnick from the Rays for infielder Ryan Roberts, designated for assignment earlier today.

There we go.

Eh. I was never a big fan of Roberts. Didn't hate him either. Just didn't give a crap either way about him. He seemed to pop out of nowhere last year which always makes me skeptical.

Did far better last year than anybody could have hoped, but what he's shown this season is probably a lot closer to his true ability. That HR late last season was still brilliant.

His range factor took strange dives the longer he was here. More importantly, he's at .227 RISP. Can't be a corner fielder with that number.

Only 1 way to see if Wheeler is ready, and I think he is.

Possibly the most overrated player in DBacks history.

That's a tough list to crack:

Eric Byrnes
Shea Hillenbrand
Tony Womack
Alex Cintron
Junior Spivey
Danny Bautista
Robby Hammock
Matt Mantei
pretty much anyone BC867 was a fan of ;)

I disagree with that. Everyone knew what he was and he played above that last year. The guy should have never been more than a utility guy and he was able to make himself a decent everyday player early last year came back down to Earth last late year, but still did the occasional great thing to get another shot this year. He went from be literary homeless in 2010 to get a $2 million this year. Those are the guys I want to root for and will root for him every chance I get. I feel a lot of people dislike him based on the tattoos along and that is wrong Not saying you do.

I don't think you can include Womack Bautista .. They did what they were suppose to do.. And did it well..

I meant by the fan base. None of those guys drew the crowd like Roberts and his stupid Tatman stuff.

Womack's OBP was always a touchstone for arguments, but the fact remains the dude stole 70 bases in a year when the D-Backs could actually bring runners home. No way he belongs on that list.

Mantei was an arm injury waiting to happen. It was well stated before they traded Penny for him. The D-Backs were just desperate. I would argue Byung-Hyung Kim before the World Series meltdown was more overrated.

I like Spivey on this list. That guy was a huge disappointment. Moreso than Cintron.

Yuck, Byrnes makes me want to puke. Earlier this year when he called one of our nationally televised games I couldnt watch. Dude is in love with himself. And the fake hustle was so annoying. Sliding into first... which is slower than running through, leaving his feet on outfield throws... that especially, the level of energy he loses on his throw by leaping first is huge.

Absolutely

Even mentioning Roberts and Byrnes in the same thread is insulting to Ryan Roberts. If Justin Upton had half of Roberts drive and determination we'd have the greatest player in the world.

That being said it was definitely time for Roberts to move on.
