Watch the last two games of the season (Big 10 Championship and Orange Bowl). Where were the big plays in these games?
It's a mistake to judge a guy on one or two games, especially a bowl game they didn't want to be playing in. He's been a plus player from the day he arrived at OSU
Can he play OLB is the question cause we don't need another MLB. Maybe SS in our system. Allot of people are saying Barr is going to be the guy that slips on draft day

Let's quit all the move to safety talk. He's a LB and will either make or break it as a LB in the NFL. He's never played a down of safety.

The only question is his size to play OLB in a 3-4 system. However, I think traditional size requirements/attributes may be evolving along with the more mobile QB's playing in the NFL. LB's are going to have to have the ability to run and chase moreso now rather than just being stout enough to hold up against the run. And Shazier can run and chase with the best of them.

Why is it unrealistic to talk about him moving to SS he wouldn't be the first speedy LB to do it. Who are all these great mobile quarterbacks? Wilson and Kapernick? That's two and neither really did anything against us last year. Two years ago that read option thing was huge last year not so much as defenses shifted.

Yeah those QBs might be a bit more mobile but those offensive lineman are still 6'6 320lbs so you better have the strength to get off a block. Can't be a one trick pony and just depend on your speed. If your talking about moving shazier to OLB then you might as well draft Dee Ford who's the best pure speed rusher in this draft

And if you are looking for a SS in the first round, draft one who has actually played the position.

Exactly.

That's why he won't be the pick at 20 for us. He's a middle linebacker and we don't need one.

It's a ASFN time honored tradition to project position switches. Heck-- at any one time, I think there are at least three starters in the top 22 where one person or another believes they would be better at a differnt position ( sometimes on the other side of the ball!). We just can't help ourselves

Not content to project position switches for players already on the roster -- we are now advocating taking a guy at 20 and having him play a position he hasn't played a down of in college.

Late round prospects trying to make a roster are the kind of guys that switch positions. You don't draft a LB in round 1 with the intent of having him learn a completely new position that he's never played before. Shazier has played OLB plenty of times at OSU.

As for Ford, Shazier is a better player than Dee Ford and has shown he can be a factor in the run game. You're right, Wilson and Kaepernick are probably the two most mobile QB's in the league. They also happen to play for our 2 biggest rivals and roadblocks to the playoffs. Drafting a guy to take away on their biggest aspects is never a bad thing. Plus, if you don't think there are more mobile QB's coming into the league, then you're not paying attention. What if St. Louis drafts Manziel(doubtful)? That'd be 3 in our division alone.

I agree. If Pryor and Shazier are sitting there at 20 and you want a safety, take Pryor.

I know. It's funny that postion switches are perceived as being something that is easy to do. It's a big enough deal just switching from the right side to the left side on the OL.

What I was trying to say to those who don't think Shazier is a good system fit---the guy is such a good player that, imho, DCs in any system would find a niche for him.

Speaking of Safeties and Ohio State what can you tell me about Orhian Johnson a practice squad guy who the Cards signed to a futures contract.

I know I'm getting old when there are guys who have been on the Cards roster that I didn't know were ever signed. I used to know every guy including the practice squad players. But not anymore. :(

If you drew up what a safety should look like, Johnson would fit the mold. He has the size and athletic ability(arrived at OSU as a QB) to play safety and has a tremendous wingspan, but never really became much of a factor. He was an on again/off again starter in his 4 years. He had some injury issues but nothing major.

He's onle of those guys that looks the part but doesn't play the part. It's hard to put your finger on why he wasn't better. He'd make a big play, or big hit, then you wouldn't here from him for a few games.

I wouldn't expect much out of him for the Cards. Probably a ST'er at best.

I think we can address SS in FA, mtl. For the reasons stated I believe Ford and Shazier have to be at the top of our board at #20 right now. Speed, speed, speed....BA has harped on it. Bring it on, he'll have a position here. Both have some physical edge as well. Great combo on either. Pick the one who's there. If both are there it's Shazier because of some knee issues probably for Ford. But Shazier also because of his mobility and ability to track down runners mainly. DWash Jr.

The NIU kid Ward at SS might be a possibility in Rd 2.

I watch alot of Ohio State games and Ryan Shazier can play, and will on Sundays. That said, I worry about our defense getting too small. DWash is small, the Honeybadger is small. We really need to get some length (and some girth on the edges).
Ryan Shazier is a playmaker and I love the idea of him on our D, I just worry about an undersized but quick defense stopping the power running of both Seattle and SF. Yes, they have scary mobile QB's, but they're still primarily power teams.
That said, if we pick him I'd be happy.

The OSU safety prospect that I'd be interested in would be Christian Bryant. Loads of potential and some production but oft-injured (still is and can't work out). IMO, he'd be a great 7th round pick up.

IMO it is not too far fetched to see Shazier as an "in the box" type of safety the position is almost hand in hand with a "coverage linebacker"...guys that can blitz, play the run, and drop into coverage. would be awesome to have Shazier and say, Pryor, on the same D...bring Pryor up to the box, and the offense never knows which one is coming and which is going to drop....or if they are both coming...or both dropping,...etc....opens up a lot of dangerous looks for the defense. Learning the SS position for a guy who has never played in the backfield can be difficult I am certain, however if the guy is a football player it is not an unthinkable transition. Having someone like that next to HB,...just wow....

but yeah,....OLB works for me too..

Agree. He was the leader of their defense. All you have to do is look how it went in the tank when he was injured. I'm surprised he didn't get granted another year of elgibility by the NCAA.

I wouldn't have an issue with the Cardinals drafting Shazier because, like Dee Ford, he would bring some speed from the edge that our current OLbs don't have.

Yeah, but 6 years would be kinda crazy. He's a leader, very good player, just injury-proned. If he's medically ok'd, he'd be a great late round swing for the fence type pick. Also, i think he'd ball on special teams.

With Dansby gone, can Shazier play ILB in the 3-4? He's similar size to DWash.
