Saints to go to San Antonio

The Saints will fly to San Antonio following their 8 p.m. Thursday game at the Oakland Raiders and will make it their home base for the immediate future, said director of media and public relations Greg Bensel.

Several teams and communities offered assistance, but Saints owner Tom Benson has long-standing ties to San Antonio, his second home. The team evacuated to San Antonio before Hurricane Ivan last year.

The Saints are planning to practice in San Antonio until their season-opener Sept. 11 at the Carolina Panthers.

Where they will play the home opener, against the New York Giants on Sept. 18, is uncertain. General Manager Mickey Loomis and the NFL are looking into potential sites, and that would include college stadiums.

The Texans offered their dome for the opener but, get this...there'd be two games on the same day! What a logistical nightmare!

I think they should just go to the LSU stadium. It's in there home state and seats as about as much as the superdome I believe. Plus it would be in their home state for there fans. It's farther north so I don't think that area has been flooded.

If you have seen the destruction...football will be the last thing on the minds of the people of Louisianna.

San Antonio makes perfect sense and would definitely support the team.

Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge it is......too many compelling reason not to stay within the state.

My goodness what devastation in NO and elsewhere along the Gulf Coast. This is a serious tragedy. My prayers go to all those suffering.

The problem is that stadium is not up to snuff. They would lose so much money in luxury boxes... trust me... Shreveport is not the place you want to watch NFL football.

Plus I'm sure San Antonio will use the opportunity to sell their city as NFL ready!

New Orleans is in essence a dead city, they can't get the water out, by the time they do everything will have rotted, so they're going to just have to bulldoze everything. I can't see a plausible scenario where they're able to play games in the Superdome anytime soon and if they could, who the hell would go given what they're dealing with now?

Quite honestly I'm not sure they SHOULD rebuild New Orleans it's quite clear building a city below sea level is not that good of an idea.

I can't see how they could justify rebuilding in the exact same area. they must move the city more inland. It sucks because of all the rich history, but it is way overdue.

They will rebuild it just where it was...that is a very old and proud history and the people will not let it go. I am sure the levee's will be built taller as well as other safety measures changed.

I am familiar with the history as I spent much of my youth there. There is no place like New Orleans anywhere in the world, so it must be rebuilt to some degree, but not in it's current state.

Allways remember folks, only about half the city is below sea level, so you raise that part of the town and build parks there (stuff that wont be highly effected by flooding). Most of the downtown/tourist/bar section only experienced some light flooding and the wate is allready gone from those areas, most of what was destroyed was residential.

Yeah... I can see New Orleans being a lot better of in the long run with the reconstruction, but it will take years maybe even decades.

... I am confident that New Orleans will come back stronger than ever. It think it is well overdue that the Government actually takes a hard look at these kinda things.

I was wondering that also Russ. The level of the city needs to be raised, but what do you raise it with? Either that or just keep what's on the high spots and move the rest of the city to the other side of the lake.

They will just rebuild the city exactly where it is at.

The levees will be higher, the pumps will be able to withstand more water than 9 feet, and this wont happen again for another 30 years or so. Don't worry! ;(

oh, and on a personal note, my father lives in New Orleans and we are confident that his house should be under 10 feet of water, and I have no clue if he evacuated.

I see what you mean now. I had not watched the TV that much until a little while ago. The way it sounded yesterday on the news was that it wasn't going to be that bad. After watching the news now I see the destruction that happened.
