Suns owner looking to deal
By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports
Sources: Suns ponder deals for Stoudemire Feb 5, 2009

As Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver reaches out to other NBA owners and proposes his own trade deals for Amare Stoudemire, he could be undermining his franchise’s chance to get the best possible package for the All-Star forward, league sources said.

NBA executives say that Sarver has contacted team owners – including those of the Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies – in an attempt to broker a deal for Stoudemire. While the Suns’ basketball executives are discussing one possible package with teams, Sarver has, at times, appeared to be pursuing his own agenda.

Some teams believe this is a circumstance they can exploit, and suggest that Suns GM Steve Kerr and David Griffin, the franchise’s VP of basketball operations, have been compromised.

“It makes [the owner] look too motivated,” said one Western Conference GM who was aware of Sarver’s calls. “It makes them look desperate.”

As an Eastern Conference GM wondered: “What in the world are two owners going to come up with that the GMs haven’t already discussed?

“This is how bad deals happen.”

Sarver didn’t immediately respond to Yahoo! Sports late Tuesday.

Kerr and Griffin are engaged in discussions with multiple teams for Stoudemire, with Chicago, Golden State, Portland, Sacramento and Memphis and others seriously pursuing him. For the Suns to get the best possible package for Stoudemire, they need Stoudemire’s suitors to believe that they’re willing to let the trade deadline pass on Feb. 19 without moving him.

Mostly, Phoenix needs to avoid looking desperate. Yet Sarver – who has a reputation for being impulsive and overzealous – has left teams dubious of believing Kerr’s bluff that he doesn’t have to trade Stoudemire.

For the Suns to bring back a package for Stoudemire which makes more basketball than financial sense, sources say, they’ll have to move the contracts of Shaquille O’Neal or Leandro Barbosa.

So far, rival GMs insist there’s no market for O’Neal – that the balance of the $20 million owed him this season and the $20 million he’ll earn next season make him untradeable.

One Western Conference GM compared interest in O’Neal with “the GOP’s interest in the current stimulus package. None.”

Most Stoudemire suitors believe the Bulls have the chance to offer the best package, which could include the expiring contract of Drew Gooden, rapidly emerging forward Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah and possibly a draft pick. Bulls GM John Paxson recently had his assistant, director of player personnel Gar Forman, return to Chicago from the college scouting trail to pore over trade possibilities with him. The Bulls are clearly determined to land Stoudemire.

As for the Suns, they’re still at the center of the league’s deadline discussions because they have the biggest stars on the market. A year ago, the O’Neal-Shawn Marion trade was born out of Miami Heat owner Micky Arison’s conversations with Sarver. It was the Suns owner who brought the possibility of the trade to Kerr and ex-Suns coach Mike D’Antoni.

Some owners do include themselves in trade talks. Dallas’ Mark Cuban regularly does, but works closely with Mavericks GM Donnie Nelson. League sources believe Sarver has struggled with the idea that the Suns’ best deal for Stoudemire won’t come until they’re up against the Feb. 19 deadline. Teams are doubting his patience in the process. Opponents think he wants a trade done soon, and that could have dramatic consequences for a franchise that can’t afford to bungle this deal.

If this is true, I take back anything good I've ever said about Sarver.

I love how Sarver thinks this is his fantasy team. What a douche. We're toast until he sells the team.

Sarver is plain stupid!

A news today said Gooden's injury is serious, he will wait after all-star to decide whether to have a surgery. Not sure if this will affect the deal.

:pullhair:Panick time. Sarver is going eff this up.:madarms:

I'm sure Kerr gave up KT and two first round draft picks because Sarver told him to move KT no matter what.

Amare is next. Get ready :moon:

Sarver will strip this team asap. Getting my virtual stick ready to beat his ass. :deadhorse2:SARVER SUCKS! Stay out of negotiations *******.:bang:

This is great. It's like a bad soap opera both within the suns organization and on the board.

Just give it a second thought, the Shaq deal is a good one for the Suns, isn't it? Sarver is probably encouraged by that deal ...

Hopefully there is plenty of love on Amare by other GMs/Owners, so we could still pull out a good deal.

When Sarver first bought the team, didn't he say something along the lines that he didn't know much about basketball? Now he's trying to make trades...:|

He's a moron that needs to be put in his place.

He bought this team to make money....NOT to enjoy owning a team to win a championship. It was a business venture that will probably fail because he doesn't have the winning mentality a owner needs, someone like Jerry Buss or Mark Cuban (I know, bad example, but he's the most passionate owner I've seen about winning). Winning championships = MORE money. But you can't win championships when you penny-pinch, cut salary, and give away draft picks and make trades for cash.

Robert Sarver is the WORST thing that has ever happened to the Suns. He is the definition of a clown. I just can't believe that Jerry sold the team to this moron.

If you guys don't believe Gambo when he spouts garbage just like this, what makes a Yahoo beat writer more believable?

The whole stadium needs to boo loudly every time this idiot stands up and waves his foam finger.

Maybe talk radio could organize something like this.

I might be more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt if this were an isolated incident.

I'm skeptical, but very nervous about what could happen *if* the management bungles this.

Egads. Given that Kerr has a close relationship with the Yahoo Sports crew, this is a really interesting article. May be his way of telling Sarver to back off and let him do his job.

As much as I bag on Kerr, up until this article, he has handled the Amare situation ok, assuming they have to trade him before the deadline for financial reasons. Make it clear to teams (and their fans) they are taking offers, then play if cool and make it clear they will keep him if no offer is good enough. Then sit back and let the suitors fight it out until 2/19.

I really wonder what is up with Sarver's banking business. He was never the wealthiest of sports owners - he may be in a world of hurt right now on the non-Suns side, and that is influencing his Suns-related decisions.

Reason #459,458 why he shouldn't own the team. If you can't afford to put together a competitive team, you shouldn't own a sports team. Do everyone a favor Sideshow Rob, sell it to someone who can afford it.

I wish it could motivate him to sell the Suns. I'm really nervous about his continued ownership. No, the Suns have never hoisted a championship trophy, but never in my life had I doubted the management a tenth of how much I doubt it now.

Why is Phoenix cursed with lousy ownership groups? Is is because Phoenix is such a target for speculators who care little about mainting history and tradition?

Colangelo was a great owner. He made a lot of mistakes early on (even trying to coach the Suns) but there was no doubt he was in it for the long haul. It was his baby. I feel no such attachment by Sarver.
