I for one would rather we lose 30-0 than to lose another another starter for the year.

Something tells me you would be furious if they lost 30-0 because that would mean very little went right on either side of the ball and probably special teams as well. There has to be a middle ground in your attitude...no injuries and losing 21-17. With that kind of result, I think there would be the positive of no substantial injuries and certainly there would be positive progress on the field (one would hope).

I like what AJ said in an earlier post about a crreative coach being able to open the playbook in preseason with the idea he can make tweaks to the plays during the regular season.

Additionally, with most playbooks rivaling the NY yellow pages in length, how detrimental is it really to open that playbookin preseason?

You have to develop a pattern of winning sometime.
I wouldn't say that winning is all-important during preseason, but I'd concede that, the longer a team goes without a win (even in preseason) the more uncomfortable the players and coaches will become - if for no other reason than rumblings will start surfacing among fans and the media, and questions will start coming about "so, when do you think you'll win your first game?..."

There's something to be said about removing that distraction as early as possible.

Just line your boys straight up against the other team, keep your line calls plain, your play calls vanilla, let the chips fall where they may, and evaluate the talent.

You can only do that if the other team lets you. Don't want to be running simple plays while the other guy is throwing complex blitz packages and stunts at you.

Total agreement. The top tier teams....a la colts, pats can afford to lose as many pre-season games as they play as their are few if any issues with them. They go into these games like going in for an oil change. Our club is going in for a major tune-up and a win or two only helps the team mental health in good shape.

What?
The Cards weren't 4-0 in preseason last year??? We got spanked by the Pats and Broncos.

Oops, I think you're right but I've seen too many pre-season wins and getting all amped up turn into nothing.

I'm staying even keel this pre-season. Won't get bummed over a loss or excited over a win since it doesn't really matter.

As long as our first string outplays their first string I'm happy. If our second string outplays their second string, I'm very happy. If we win, it's a bonus.

If we are up 17-0 at the half, and we lose 17-21, is it really time to panic? I say no. Most of the kids playing the second half will never see the field during the regular season.

Something tells me that I will end up being furious over them by season's end reguarless. However I am 100% positive that I will feel better going to SF with our starting linup intact than with 3 wins in the preseason. Maybe its just me.

First of all...it really doesn't make that much difference what plays a team runs in pre-season...in today's NFL there's so much adjusting at the line of scrimmage (recognitions, reads and audibles), play calling has become more of a "take what the defense is giving you" approach.

Secondly, most pre-season games come down to whose subs outplay the others'. Last week, the real score was 7-7. So, if Whiz really wants to get creative to win the game, he will call plays that cater to QB Shane Boyd's strenths, seeing as Boyd will probably play most of the second half. Whiz did last week when he called a QB draw for Boyd in the red zone.

Thirdly, most of the Cardinals' early season opponents will only take a quick look at the pre-season games in order to evaluate the Cardinals' personnel...but the major prep will be to look at several of Whiz's games with the Steelers in order to get the most accurate sense of what to expect scheme-wise and how to chart Whiz's tendencies in situations, like calls on first and ten and calls on 3rd and short...and calls in the red zone.

Some coaches already have a book on Whiz's tendencies...I bet you Mike Nolan does, or at least he's still working on it.

Does anyone think Dennis Green ever kept a book on opposing coaches' tendencies? Does anyone think Green ever wanted to work THAT hard?

At one time I'm sure he did. You don't go 15-1 in the NFL sitting around all day eating chili dogs, no matter what kind of talent you have. I do think he eventually got a big head and thought he was too smart to have to work hard.
