Guy at work emails me last night, Stanford is insisting everyone immediately run Windows updates and patch because of Schannel, we should too. I'm at home so I email my boss and ask him to send out the message which he does.
Guy today at work, "hey I got the BSOD last night why did that happen?" Me very puzzled, "impossible to answer what were you doing?"
"well I'd just installed those updates you guys told us to install and now my machine is crashed." "Did it blue screen again"
"NO but I want to restore it so it doesn't happen again." Me "I strongly recommend you don't MS is literally forcing people to install those updates because it's so critical, if you roll yours back it's just going to try and install it again."
"Well why does it cause BSOD?" "I can't answer that, even Bill Gates couldn't have answered that when he was in charge."
I eventually found out why, he got tired of waiting for them to install last night so he cancelled it somewhere before all 21 updates. It's actually a credit to MS that his computer boots at all.
So they're all installed now.
People kill me at work sometimes.
I had another guy ask me yesterday where all their files went on the server. I didn't even know they were there, I'm not an admin, I'm not in charge of backups. The folders are there, but all empty. We are in the middle of changing over backups so they might not have a backup, and it now appears one of them(4 were involved) accidentally deleted them all when copying the data over, instead of copy he did "cut" and then pasted it onto his computer. Then his computer had a problem and he .... wait for it... restored it to an earlier point and lost all the files.
