I want to say that I miss Scott Skiles. He was the greatest coach the Suns ever had. I loved him. He was a winner. Suns made a worse move in franchise history by firing Skiles. All Skiles did was win baby. Skiles inspired people to perform. He got so much out of so little. His work ethic was off the charts. He was a good Christian. He is a great example of Jesus Christ. I loved him. The Suns have never been the same since he was fired. It's a shame the Suns have blackballed him.

You know, I was thinking about this -- former Suns head coaches almost never coach again. It's like the entire league has figured out that the Suns will only hire from within, which is why their coaches always suck, which is why no one else wants them.

Skiles: No one will touch him.

Ainge: Hid in broadcasting for a while, now has a non-coaching position.

Westphal: Caught on with the Sonics (where he had spent time as a player) for about a year and a half, as I recall; was terrible, hasn't seen action since.

Fitzsimmons: You think he'd turn down an offer if he got one?

And so on, and so on. And when it comes time for the Suns to part ways with Frank Johnson, do you think other teams will be lining up for his services? I doubt it.

I can't think of another NBA team whose former head coaches have a worse track record at finding other positions. It really says something.

Skiles accomplishements has been remarkable:

-- He developed Jason Kidd and Steve Nash.
-- He developed young players as assistant coach
-- When he became a coach, Suns got past the first round against the Spurs. Suns defended the champs and they almost scared the Lakers in his first year.
-- Suns scared the Kings in the first round
-- Suns were in the playoffs when he was fired.

Skiles accomplish so much in Phoenix. Steve Nash has always thought of the world of Skiles. He credited Skiles for being the player he is today.

Ya, he developed a player that was already considered a great PG and former ROY. Oh and he was never the head coach when Nash was with the Suns.

-- He developed young players as assistant coach
I have no idea what that means. If you have any evidence to support this, please show us.

-- When he became a coach, Suns got past the first round against the Spurs. Suns defended the champs and they almost scared the Lakers in his first year.
That and ¢35 will get him a cup of coffee.

-- Suns scared the Kings in the first round
That and another ¢35 will get him another cup of coffee.

.

There is a reason that Skiles can only get a job coaching high school ball.

NYSunsFan, welcome to the message board. Now I'm going to question your sanity. Scott Skiles might have been a good defensive coach. He might be a good Christian also. But he was a horrible head coach.

Since when does being a good Christian make someone a good head coach in the NBA? As far as I'm concerned you lose a fair amount of credibility as soon as you frame religion into your basketball argument. And comparing him to Jesus Christ is a way over the top.

Do you honestly believe the Suns blackballed Scott Skiles? I think that is preposterous. They went to great lengths not to hurt his chances of being hired in the future. They even went through that "mutual separation" BS instead of just firing him like they could have.

Scott Skiles isn't coaching anymore because he was a first-class jerk. His whole team hated him. It's no secret that the locker room under his leadership was extremely negative.

I do think you are way off base about Scott Skiles, but welcome to the message board.

Charles: Skiles was the assistant coach when Nash was drafted by the Suns. Nash and SKiles would work out together every single day in practice. Nash thinks of the world of him. He always credited Skiles for being what he is now. Kidd was good, but he was erratic. He got better when he was in Phx because Skiles worked with him a lot. Skiles developed young players like Ford, Nash, McDyess, Milic, Garrity, Bailey, and Sims to name a few. My point about Skiles playoff performance is that he got his flawed team to take the Lakers and Kings to the wire not to mention the Suns upset the Spurs (1999 defending champs) in the first round of the playoffs in 2000.

schutd: You can get 35 cents of coffee at the George Washington Bridge Bus Station at 178th St at Fort Washington Ave.

Joe: You need to have good Christian values to relate to the players and that's what Skiles did. Why Herman Edwards, Jets head coach, use scriptures from the Gospel to inspire a team. Why didn't the Suns call other teams to promote Skiles? That's what you call courtesy. How was he a first-class jerk? Name one coach that is very nice. Musselman and Van Gundy are way too negative compared to Skiles. Why don't those two have the same label? Look at Gregg Popovich. Did you saw his antics last night? How is his sideline antics any different than Skiles?

I'd like to see your proof of this. He never developed McDyess, and Ford, Milic, Bailey and Sims are out of the league--that has to tell you something.

I don't buy it.

NYSunsfan is probably somebody from this board under a different handle just trying to yank your chain.

Even the most ardent Skiles admirer can't love him this much.

The "good Christian" part put it over the top. Skiles has a rep for being a hard drinking, hard driving, party type.

To Skiles credit. He's a good assistant. He's great with x's and o's and defensive strategy. He probably should be career assistant in the NBA.

He might work as a college coach, but only in a situation where the players do not have as fragile a psyche--Army, Navy, etc, or maybe a place like Stanford (Ivy league type of school where academics and discipline are as important as the hoops).

Skiles: no argument
Ainge: Left by his own decision. I don't think he wants to coach. (I believe him)
Westphal: Currently a college coach at Pepperdine.
Fitzsimmons: Yes I think he would turn it down. He gets paid now not to coach. He is basically retired.

Track record may not be the greatest but I don't believe it is as bad as you make it out to be.

So, Mormans, Islamic, Jewish ect. ect. coaches cannot relate to their players? That may or may not be the worst pre req I have ever said. I mean I could maybe, MAYBE see the logic (not agree with it, but at least see where it is coming from) in saying a black coach can relate better to the majority of his players than a white coach would, but I really think bringing religion into is just well, stupid

Since when are mormons not Christians? I have been a mormon all of my life and I have worshipped Jesus Christ all of my life. I comes as news to me that I am not a Christian. Not to turn this into a religious debate but I couldn't let that one go.

Yes, I was aware of that. It's not exactly a high-profile coaching job. Has Westphal's name surfaced in any NBA coaching rumors? Not that I've heard. We are talking about someone who went to the Finals ten years ago, but he still can't get a look. I stand by my original observation.

alright im sorry. I am not a big religious guy, actually i care not to follow or learn about them. I guess i was thinking catholic instead of christian.

To reiterate my point, what the hell does coaching have to do with good christian values and how does that help you communicate better with your team? Personally, if my coach ever started rambling about religious stuff, I would probably fall asleep or walk out.

IMO you do not even need good values (which is an undefineable attribute by the way) period to be a successful coach and in touch with your team.

If Scott Skiles was a good Christian, then I'm about to be cannonized as a saint in my Catholic church. After all, I acted like Skiles.

I smoked dope, drank too much, frolicked as much as I could with many women, and all in all led a debauched life for quite a while.

The only differences between Scott and me are that he made more money than I did and he drove drunk, something I never did.

Scott Skiles, Danny Ainge, and Paul Westphal were bad coaches, with Westphal being the best of a bad bunch.

Christian, Mormon, or atheist, they all sucked as coaches.

I want to apologize for dissing other religions. All coaches should use religions to prove their point. I know Herman Edwards, Byron Scott, and Scott Skiles did. There is nothing wrong with that. I use religion to prove my point in college. I promote religion when I participate in class to prove my point.

I admire Skiles as a player and a human being. Skiles is very humble and classy. He seems like a nice man. He was a good role model to Shaq, Penny, Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, and among others. His professionalism rubbed off on others. I got to meet him once at a game and he seemed so down to earth. No question Skiles had personal problems, but he found God in his life and he became a changed man by reading Chicken Soup for the Soul. Chicken Soup for the Soul changed him for the good.

Is this supposed to be comedy?

Because frankly, NY is talking about a totally different "Scott Skiles". I think the rest of us remember the a-- hole that everyone else hated, including most of the players that played under him.

Skiles is not a cornholio. He is a very intense guy that is about winning. You have to remember he is a young coach so forgive him for being insecure. I think as he age, he will mellow.

That is probably true, but he still was a prick when he coached the Phoenix Suns. Them's the facts.
