For what it's worth, the Arizona Cardinals are good hosts. It's a credit to the Bidwill family that they've built a nice game-day atmosphere. I took my 9 year-old son to the game yesterday. The tailgating seemed to be at least 60% Seattle fans, which wasn't great. We wandered over to the Flight Deck tailgate party and found a nice, family-friendly area that was extremely low-key and sparsely populated, but had good food and a nice place to hang out with some other fans. Whoever is arranging this is doing a good job.
David Johnson - The haters are going to hate, but David Johnson had nearly 140 yards from scrimmage and was the only source of big plays in the offense yesterday. He was also effective sealing the safety when blocking.
Chase Edmonds - The 2 RB set was awesome! Chase Edmonds provides a nice spark out of the backfield and is a more dependable 3rd down blocker than David Johnson right now. His playing time may continue to increase as the roster of pass catchers continues to sort itself out.
Maxx Williams - The double-X factor probably never expected to find himself split outside as often as he was this week. It's possible that the Cards most effective personnel package is 21 personnel with only one RB in the backfield.
D.J. Swearinger - At only 28 years old, he should be entering his prime, but his play has been so bad since he returned to Arizona that I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he gets released on Tuesday. The expectation was that playmaking from the safety position would make up for inexperienced corners hasn't come to life.
Jordan Hicks - The middle of this defense is soft, and Corey Peters gets some responsibility for that, but so does Hicks, who has failed to deliver on his promise as a playmaker and is more of a complementary piece on a defense that desperately needs another playmaker.
Zane Gonzales - This is probably regression to the mean for a kicker that isn't good enough to help a playoff team but is fine for a team who would finish around 7-9. Unfortunately, this is a team who needs a dependable anchor to deliver points when a young offense bogs down.
Did the Future of Football Arrive?
Larry Fitzgerald passed Tony Gonzales for #2 all time in receptions, but (1) stadium operations misspelled the tight end's name on the first card they put up to celebrate Larry's tie and (2) Fitzgerald took a backseat on offense until the game was basically out of hand. Fitz was on the sideline for 10 of the Cards' 63 offensive snaps and was sent to the sideline when the Cards went to their 21 personnel package. I think this offense is going to give people trouble, and I think this offensive line is good enough. The problem is that the wide receivers aren't good, and this offense is predicated on some wide receiver being able to beat single coverage sometimes.
Kingsbury has compensated by putting in heavy groups like the 21 personnel package and then spreading the field out of it to hopefully create some personnel mismatches. I love the creativity and problem-solving.
