There are indications veteran center Sean Marks could return

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/articles/0705hillonline.html

The Suns may be done in free agency except for re-signing Sean Marks and using the 13th roster spot for a player such as second-round pick D.J. Strawberry or summer league pickup Pape Sow.

Free-agent big men like Chris Mihm or P.J. Brown could be pursued if the Suns were to trade Kurt Thomas, who will make $8.1 million this season.

I honestly don't get it. If Marks couldn't beat out Burke, a player D'Antoni did not seem lot like, why would they want Marks back?

I remember researching hm when they signed him a year ago and it was hard to make a case for doing it. About all I could find was that he played moderately well during stretche when Duncan was injured, but it was not long and it wasn't dramatic.

His career numbers are tiny. He has played in only 108 games since 1998, averaged 3.1 ppg on 41.8% shooting and 2.0 rpg (0.21 per minute). With the Suns he played in only 3 games for a grand total of 17 minutes FOR THE SEASON.

What am I missing? He's going to be 32 years old in Aug, so it's not like he's a project we can expect to get better. Yet the fact that both papers mention it suggests the Suns are serious.

As AI says, practice is practice. Would you rather have a guy that can't play OR practice?

But that does not give the Suns even a hint of being able to deal with an injury to a rotation player, much less prepare for when KT is gone.

I don't think this really has anything to do with his level of NBA talent but more about what else he brings to the team for the veteran minimum. My take is that Sean Marks must be a good locker room presence and a practice player that improves chemistry on the Suns. Also it doesn't hurt if the GM likes you.

I'd be more comfortable if I thought the coach liked him.

I've said this before. I think Steve Kerr really likes Sean Marks, both as a player and a person. When the Suns signed him, Kerr wrote an article for Yahoo that said he thought the Suns got a great bargain and that Marks would probably be a contributor in the rotation.

Burke's attitude was horrible toward the end of the year. He was complaining about minutes and participation yet had made a fool of himself throwing up 3's like he's goofing off at the park.

I would rather have Marks than Burke, although that still isn't saying much for Marks.

Agreed. I really soured on Burke last season, and I think he really hurt his chances of playing much in the NBA again because he was a human victory cigar sideshow clown that would come in and shoot 3's when he came in the game.

If Kerr likes Marks so damn much, keep him...but also keep Pape. The guy is 24 or 25 and didn't play organized ball until college. He is a ferocious dunker and rebounder...has been know to block a few shots...what is there not to like about this guy ? and What do we NEED ?

I was happy to see his name on our otherwise unspectacular SL roster.

If Pape Sow was really any good then he wouldn't be searching for any team that will pick him up.

Marks isn't great, but as others have said he knows his role and doesn't complain. That's a huge plus for a guy who won't see any playing time all season.

Marks has no upside. Papa Sow still does.

A bunch of us wanted the Suns to make a run at Dasagna Diop for that very reason. Dallas got him for nothing and now he's a decent rotation guy that fills the lane. I understand Pape Sow is nothing more than bench fodder and his name reminds me of that horrible Kevin Federline song, but I'd much rather have him than a skinny 7-footer who "allegedly" can stroke from the outside - even if he can shoot do you seriously want him taking shots away from the rest of the squad? We need a banger and Sow could potentially fill that need.

Marks is horrible, end of story. They should at least call Jake Voshkul and see if he'll take the vet. min. for a chance at a ring. He's 5x the player Marks is.

You mean we should only talk about good basketball players in a basketball forum?

Why? This is actually about someone who might be on the team, unlike Kobe and others who won't.

Ironically enough, complaining about Marks might actually help. If the Suns FO decides it would be an unpopular decision, maybe they'd reconsider. OK, it's not likely, but you never know.

i mean we should talk about something of relevance. unless any of you know about marks' experiences in practice last year we have to assume he was largely irrelevant. and both burke and sow are of the same relevance level.

did it matter when we signed shirley? when we cut shirley? did it matter at all? did marks play last year? relevance people, relevance. y'all can talk about him all you want, but to argue about his value to the team, well, given last year's contribution, is just silly imo. but i guess it's a slow day.

Ok guys, no talking about Banks, Pike, Burke, Marks, Rose even Tucker and Strawberry, or any non-Suns player because they weren't relevant last year's team. In fact, don't talk about teams past, unless it has relevance to last year's or this year's team.

Does that about cover it?
