Sendek threw his name in to the running for the UVA job before Bennett got it?

According to Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated, this is the case:

http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/web/COM1153849/index.htm

How dangerous is it to try to report on the coaching carousel while it's still spinning? Well, I spent much of Monday on the phone chasing down rumors about who was going to get the vacant Virginia job. Most people "in the know" told me it was down to Tubby Smith or Sean Miller, and two reputable sources told me that Arizona State coach Herb Sendek was trying to get into the mix.

I'm not too sure if I feel so comfortable with Sendek sticking around long term. Perhaps it was only smoke, but where there's smoke...

Herb was "trying to get into the mix"? Sounds like BS to me. And he also says the Virginia job was down to Miller and and Tubby Smith but that Bennett unexpectedly got the job? Doesn't make any sense to me.

I wouldn't be surpised if Herb wants to leave in a few years but now does not seem like the ideal time with the program just starting to rise and the Weatherup Center being built.

It didn't take Haller saying the rumor was untrue to deduce that it was. First off, Sendek is a bigger name and generally regarded as a more accomplished coach than Bennett, he likely would've gotten the UVA job over Bennett if he wanted it. Herb also left the ACC, why would he want to go back?

Sendek will want to leave eventually and UVA's a very good job. *shrug* I wouldn't blame him for that if it were true. The one good thing about Sendek is he tends to produce talented assistants. I imagine he'd leave us one or two behind. If he doesn't stick around, he could still be our Dan Devine. Dan was here only three years but he left a positive impact for decades after.

Well, that's not true. Sendek may have a bigger name because he's been around longer but Bennett is perceived (whether rightfully so or not) in coaching circles to have a greater upside than Herb who's a coach you know what you're going to get with.

I disagree. But you're so set in your thought process no one will ever change your mind, so I'm not going to try.

Next time Bennett brings in a James Harden type to his program, it'll be the first. Sendek isn't a Calipari or an Izzo, but most ADs would probably pick him and play it 'safe'. Really what advantage does Bennett have, youth? He runs an even slower, duller offense than Herb. It is impressive though that he was able to remain competitive in Pullman, so thats an accomplishment.

No offense but Bennet got Klay Thompson to come play basketball at Washington St.

He isnt James Harden, but getting a top 10 player at his position to come play at WSU is a big coup.

Based on what exactly...?

The guys in a great place to live, has a chance to build a program thats continually in the top third of his program, has a palace of a practice facility about to open and has a kid who may be the best PG in the west coming in a few years. WFA will be undergoing a renovation in the upcoming years as well and it should help make a better game day experience.

...that his heart isn't here. This is pretty evident to me due to the rumors that he inquired about the UVA job. Why would a coach inquire about another positino if he was content with where he was? Beyond that, why inquire about a position for a 10-18 club that has had terrible recruiting the last few seasons.

He's an East Coast guy and his days here are numbered as more East coast positions become available

That Herb is waiting for the right East Coast job to open up to throw his name in is nothing secret in the college basketball world. Look for him to take a job with great academics and marginal expectations here in the next couple years, I'd be worried about St. John's opening up.

Herb's a hoops guy who coached at Kentucky and in the ACC, seeing his own building half-empty every night after what he accomplished there is what's going to drive him away from ASU. And Miller taking the Arizona job should speak volumes considering both coaches admitted they do not like playing against each other. Pretty obvious that one of those two guys is not long for Southwest.

You mean that rumor which turned out to be patently untrue? If I started making up rumors about you, it wouldn't make them true.

As far as it eating away at Herb that he plays in front of a not so full arena, WFA is going to undergo some renovations to reduce capacity here soon (probably within 2 years). ASU was 3rd in the Pac 10 in attendance, they had respectable numbers, their arena is just oversized for our over saturated market.

Did you actually expect Sendek to tell the ASU beat writer for the local paper that he was out looking at other jobs?

Feel free to ask Gadd, he's probably the most connected personto ASU Athletics on this board. He's admitted Sendek may have one eye looking back East while he builds this program in Tempe. There's nothing wrong with that, I'm very aware that Miller will probably bolt to Pitt whenever Jamie Dixon leaves. You just gotta hope the right opportunity and timing do not come along.

You sure about that? I thought they had terrible attendance. This is all I ever hear from Arizona fans and to be honest, I thought they were right without ever looking into it.

With all due respect, I don't think capacity of the arena, facilities or anything related has any factor in Sendek's decision to stay or go.

No where did Haller cite Sendek himself regarding the UVA job. He cited 3 other ASU insider 'sources' that said Sendek never looked into UA. I also have two very high dollar ASU boosters that I'm friends with and both of them said the UVA rumor was false.

You sure about that? I thought they had terrible attendance. This is all I ever hear from Arizona fans and to be honest, I thought they were right without ever looking into it.

Welp, shows where listening to UA fans gets you. Yah ASU was 3rd in overall attendance, but if you go by percentage of the arena full, its lower since they have the 2nd largest arena in the Pac 10.

With all due respect, I don't think capacity of the arena, facilities or anything related has any factor in Sendek's decision to stay or go.

So then whats your argument? He's an "East Coast Guy" so he'll leave? Well what does it mean to be an East coast or West coast guy? Is it based on the fact that he previously worked in the East? Do you know him personally? Has he complained about being in the West? Has he done poorly in the west? Is his family not enjoying it here?

Please, lets stop being so freakin' ridiculous. Very few people know what Herb and his family are probably really thinking or feeling and to just proclaim "well he's an East Coast guy" is silly.

If you have a reasoned, well thought out argument for why Sendek is looking for an out, I'd love to hear it, but so far you've got nothing other than a mystical gut feeling.

There really is no reason to be so hostile, I was merely injecting an opinion that was formulated around observations, second hand information and precidence. By precidence I mean most college coaches have their eye on their dream job or a return to their roots. Roy Williams as an example....

There was some conjecture as to why he took this job in the first place. If you feel it's ridiculous to ponder such things I guess the converstation can cease. It is okay to take off the blinders and look at certain cirumstances that may be very obvious to those who are more objective and this is certainly the appropriate environment to do so.

Im not being hostile, but I keep asking you to put forth an argument that makes at least some sense, and you refuse.

Lets look at the balance sheet here, on one side we have for reasons Herb would stay at ASU:

-Good facilities that will soon be great facilities
-Good recruits coming in
-low-middle expectations
-A power conference thats going through growing pains (new coaches at UA, Cal & Wazzu), that he could be competitive in
-Proof that he can have success here already
-Past history of staying in one place for a long period.

On the other side of the equation we have:
- He's an "East coast guy." A nearly meaningless statement that we don't even know if its true

So please don't tell me I'm the one lacking objectivity. Your argument is you have a gut feeling and you think he prefers living on the East Coast (something you've repeatedly offered zero evidence of). My argument is well reasoned, and has multiple reasons as to why Sendek would stay.

I don't know that he's looking to go back to the ACC, but I can see him eventually going back east. I would have been surprised had he left this soon, though. It would run counter to what he's told people in private.

He has privately stated he's excited about this window of opportunity while the Pac-10 is in transition. He also enjoys a strong relationship with Lisa Love and likes that there's zero meddling. This is his program. He's calling all the shots. That just doesn't exist east of the Rockies.

The one thing that's disappointed him, I'm told, is the lack of strong basketball knowledge among players on the West Coast. It's more of a star's mentality here and even the best players in California (outside of Harden) require intensive teaching when they first show up. Players just don't have an innate sense of where to be on the floor on offense or defense like they do back east. It's difficult for him to recruit to his system on the West Coast because his system requires smart players -- in basketball terms, if not in the classroom, although the two seem to go hand-in-hand.

I do think he'll leave eventually, but everything I can assess of him is he wants to leave a healthy program. Nothing (other than this rumor) suggests he's looking to bail soon.

Agreed, Herb's not a mercenary who's looking for the next big job to open up the minute he steps on campus for the first time. He's just an East Coast guy with certain preferences. He won't leave for any East Coast gig, just one that a good fit for him so as an ASU fan you have to hope that the timing and opportunity don't match.

I'm not refusing anything as I am not trying to make an argument. As I just stated, I have heard some things from other people who are much more informed on Sun Devil athletics than I am. I am citing information I have heard on why he took the ASU job to begin with. Which from my information was he wanted to go to a higher profile school but wasn't considered for some of the jobs that he was initially interested. ASU was the next best option for him.

This isn't a gut feeling, I am forming a hypothesis off the information I have been given. I have never quantified this as fact and am just opening it up for discussion. This is what a messageboard is for, not to jump down someone's throat for having a differing observation

Just like Jamie Dixon is a West Coast guy, so a plum opening in the west would have been a shoe-in for him to go to?
