It needs to get done. No NFL and no NBA is driving me crazy. I'm tired of waiting and hoping for one of them to get their act together. At least if the NFL gets going it can help me get through the NBA lockout.

I think it will be done within a week. The only reason its taken this long is because both sides want to get the best deal they can. Negotiating 101 - stand strong until there's a reason to get the deal done. Now they have something to loose. It will get done.

FA is gonna be nutz!

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but what's to say there isn't a potential clash between sides over the weekend, which would set negotiations back? Don't forget the Antitrust lawsuit, which has to be settled before the CBA can be finalized and transactions can finally occur.

Honestly, I am encouraged by the progress according to the media, but I want to see results. I'll become a believer once free agency begins.

The anti-trust law suit will go away once a new CBA is agreed on. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for the players union to come back into existance after the agreement is finalized.

This is so exciting! I don't want football back if it means losing these stories about negotiating a new CBA and ending the lockout!

I thought I heard today on NFL Network that it takes 6 nomths for the union to decertify which means they are still a union:shrug:

However, I also heard the players could sue for lost wages due to the lockout. If the players could successfully sue for their lost salaries, then the owners have a lot to lose by locking the players out with no income for the season.

It'll go away, but not instantaneously (according to Sirius NFL Radio). It could take days for that to happen, meaning we could hear that a deal is in place, but the anti-trust lawsuit is still needs to be dropped and until that happens, free agency is still frozen in time.

I haven't heard anything about the union re-certifying though. Not sure of the parameters regarding this issue.

If the players even think about that we wont see an agreement for awhile IMO.

I'm pretty sure I heard the other day that if players' lawsuit was successful they would be entitled to triple salary in damages.

Smith has said that the players are not going to do so, and most think it is because a deal is close. This makes it seem to me like a deal will be done soon.

The latest judgement merely covers the existing lockout of players under contract; not FA, UDFA or Draft picks... and it preserve the player's right to sue for damages. This latter point only matters if they do not come to agreement. The pressing feature at this point is the hundreds of millions to be lost if there is no pre-season. Monies that come off the top and effects both ownership and players.

De. Smith is an attorney and Im sure he advised them that any suit of this nature would be counter-intuitive. It would further prolong the lockout, which would waste away their salary. Plus, if courts are already calling the lockout legal, there is no guarantee they'll win anything.

Simply put: get the deal done, settle the Brady v. NFL case and let's get this season started!

The oustanding issues not covered by the lockout (FA's, draftees, UDFA) would be litigated under federal anti-trust laws.

If the present negotiations broke down, then a refusal by teams to sign any of the aforementioned would be construed as collusion.

These factors in addition to the legality of the lockout and, perhaps most important, pre-season revenue loss all argue for a prompt settlement.

pre season revenue loss only really hurts the owners....players get training pay for pre season as game checks do not start until opening day. Training pay is minimal, a few hundred bucks a week.....of course, pre season pay may be one of the issues they discuss...

Not true, that is counted in total revenue, including TV money they have to give back. Means lower cap number if any games are missed. One week of preseason is a loss of 200 million in revenue. They went into detail about this on Mike and Mike.
