I am not sure I believe this team is good enough to beat the Dodgers in a 5 or 7 game series but you make a valid point. If the dbacks fail to make the playoffs then we may regret not maximizing the possibilities.

I'm not sold that this team can be the Brewers, Cubs or the Rockies in a 5 or 7 game series...

I’m more concerned about beating the brewers/cubs in a series than beating the Dodgers.

This is a first place caliber team in what counts as a small, non-coastal market. You don't give up in the middle of a winning season, as you won't get many chances like this. What happens if we give away all our talent now to load up on kids? What then, when the kids get good, you give up on them too? We're winning NOW. How often do you get the chance to take the Doyers and their idiotic unlimited payroll and stick it to them?

Well said! I understand the point others are making about trying to get something of value for Pollock and Corbin. But that is not about winning. That is about money. The Front Office can sign free agents when they lose free agents. That is their responsibility.

You play to win! That's why professional athletes are so grossly overpaid. To give fans the satisfaction of rooting to win. But 82CardsGrad wants us to raise the white flag and give up the fight so we can do what? Try to get back someday to what we have right now.

We're already there ... and have been all season despite injuries to so many key players. As you, AZCrazy (you don't sound crazy), I want to see it through. While we have a good starting staff. And a good closing staff, as well. And a solid batting order.

P.S.: I just took a look at the Farm System Stuff thread. It sounds pretty encouraging.

As I have stated before on this topic - if I were in the front office, chances are I probably would've taken the very path the team is on now... The chance to reach the post season, regardless of how it plays out once we're in it, is just too much of a boon for the team not to go for it when you're this close.
However, since I'm not in the front office and I don't have the financial worries to deal with, I can be more objective... and in so doing, I can see that this team is not a First Place team. It is not a Championship team of any kind... And because of that, it borders on negligence that the team will allow top-tier talent like Pollock and Corbin to slip away with nothing coming back. Corbin in particular, as a strikeout producing lefty, would've garnered a tremendous bounty in return. The Yankees in particular would've emptied their premier farm system to grab him.
And I'm seriously trying not to fall out of my seat laughing my arse off about our farm system sounding "encouraging!"

And given the reality of what the Dbacks really are in the baseball arms race they simply cannot allow high worth players walk. The Dbacks are really a team that is about middle of the pack with current spending but they are closer tip teams like the Twins, Pirates. Those teams don't allow many players with a trade market walk. They are continually churning and yes they only make the playoffs sporadically but I believe that is where the Dbacks live.

Having said that, they have a hard enough time drawing crowds so selling those assets when took are winning well simply not play well.

I see them as similar to the A's as well... of course, not nearly as well-managed as is Oakland, as Oakland would NEVER allow players like Pollock or Corbin to walk away and not get a nice haul of young talent in return...

Why does everyone always assume that we can't resign our own players? Must we always lose every good player we develop or trade for?
This is why a salary cap needs to happen in the worst way. We can't have four teams and 26 farm system feeders.
